Thermopower generation and thermoelectric cooling in a Kane-Mele normal-insulator-superconductor nano-junction

We have studied thermoelectric effect of a Kane-Mele normal-insulator-superconductor (KMNIS) junction at ultra-low temperatures using a modified version of the well-known Blonder-Tinkham-Klapwijk (BTK) theory. Since both the (electronic) charge and thermal current due to the carriers are sensitive to the strengths of the spin-orbit coupling (SOC) present in the Kane-Mele model, a tunability of this junction device with regard to its thermoelectric properties can be experimentally achieved by certain techniques that are used to manipulate the values of the spin-orbit couplings. We have computed the Seebeck coefficient, the Figure of Merit, the thermoelectric cooling, the coefficient of performance of the KMNIS junction as a self-cooling device and investigated the role of the Rashba SOC (RSOC) and intrinsic SOC (ISOC) parameters therein. Our results on the thermoelectric cooling indicate practical realizability and usefulness for efficient cooling detectors, sensors, and quantum devices and hence could be crucial to experimental success of the thermoelectric applications of such junction devices. Further we have briefly touched upon the condition that distinguishes transmission through a topological insulator from an ordinary one.

Unconventional charge and spin dependent transport properties of a graphene nanoribbon with line-disorder

Electronic transport with a line (or a few lines) of Anderson type disorder in a zigzag graphene nanoribbon is investigated in presence of Rashba spin-orbit interaction. Such line disorders give rise to peculiar behavior in both charge as well as spin-polarized transmission in the following sense. In the weak disorder regime, the charge transport data show Anderson localization up to a certain disorder strength, beyond which the extended states emerge and start dominating over the localized states. These results are the hallmark signature of a selectively disordered (as opposed to bulk disorder) graphene nanoribbon. However, the spin-polarized transport shows a completely contradicting behavior. Further, the structural symmetries are shown to have an important role in the spintronic properties of the nanoribbons. Moreover, the edge-disorder scenario (disorder selectively placed at the edges) seems to hold promise for the spin-filter and switching device applications.

Controlled engineering of spin polarized transport properties in a zigzag graphene nanojunction

We investigate a novel way to manipulate the spin polarized transmission in a two terminal zigzag graphene nanoribbon in presence of Rashba spin-orbit (SO) interaction with circular shaped cavity engraved into it. A usual technique to control the spin polarized transport behaviour of a nanoribbon can be achieved by tuning the strength of the SO coupling, while we show that an efficient engineering of the spin polarized transport properties can also be done via cavities of different radii engraved in the nanoribbon. Simplicity of the technique in creating such cavities in the experiments renders an additional handle to explore transport properties as a function of the location of the cavity in the nanoribbon. Further, a systematic assessment of the interplay of the Rashba interaction and the dimensions of the nanoribbon is presented. These results should provide useful input to the spintronic behaviour of such devices. In addition to the spin polarization, we have also included an interesting discussion on the charge transmission properties of the nanoribbon, where, in absence of any SO interaction a metal-insulator transition induced by the presence of a cavity is observed.

Interface sensitivity on spin transport through a three-terminal graphene nanoribbon

Spin dependent transport in a three-terminal graphene nanoribbon (GNR) is investigated in presence of Rashba spin-orbit interaction. Such a three-terminal structure is shown to be highly effective in filtering electron spins from an unpolarized source simultaneously into two output leads and thus can be used as an efficient spin filter device compared to a two-terminal one. The study of sensitivity of the spin-polarized transmission on the location of the outgoing leads results in interesting consequences and is explored in details. There exist certain symmetry relations between the two outgoing leads with regard to spin-polarized transport, especially when they are connected to the system in a particular manner. We believe that the prototype presented here can be realized experimentally and hence the results can also be verified.

Effects of an attractive three body interaction on a spin-1 Bose Hubbard model

We study the effects of an attractive three body interaction potential on a spin-1 ultracold Bose gas using mean field approach (MFA). For an antiferromagnetic (AF) interaction, the third MI lobe is predominantly affected, where it completely engulfs the second and the fourth MI lobes at large values of the interaction strength. Albeit no significant change is observed beyond the fourth MI lobe. The formation of the spin singlet (nematic) MI phase and the different order of phase transitions to the SF phase have been carefully scrutinized with the help of spin eigenvalues and spin nematic order parameter. In the ferromagnetic case, the phase diagram shows similar features as that of a scalar Bose gas. We have compared our results on the MFA phase diagrams for both types of the interaction potential via a perturbation expansion in both the cases.

Dynamics of interacting bosons in a double well potential-harmonic versus chirp modulation

We present effects of an external driving on the tunneling dynamics of interacting bosons confined in a double well potential. At large values of a periodic driving potential, the dynamics become chaotic, with a distinct difference between tuning of the amplitude or the phase of the driving term with regard to the route leading to chaos. For example, we find that a controlled increase in the amplitude of the driving term with a fixed phase leads to quasiperiodic route to chaos. While tuning of the frequency with a fixed (large) amplitude leads to a crisis induced intermittency route to a chaotic dynamics, where the system intermittently visits different attractors in the phase space. Surprisingly, a chirp frequency superposed on a harmonic signal suppresses the chaotic motion, thereby yielding an orderly dynamics, pretty similar to a (damped) Rabi oscillation.

Management of the Correlations of Ultracold Bosons in Triple Wells

Ultracold interacting atoms are an excellent tool to study correlation functions of many-body systems that are generally eluding detection and manipulation. Herein, we investigate the ground state of bosons in a tilted triple-well potential and characterize the many-body state by the eigenvalues of its reduced one-body density matrix and Glauber correlation functions. We unveil how the interplay between the interaction strength and the tilt can be used to control the number of correlated wells as well as the fragmentation, i.e. the number of macroscopic eigenvalues of the reduced one-body density matrix.

Quantum phases of a spin-1 ultracold Bose gas with three body interactions

We study the effects of both a repulsive and an attractive three body interaction potential on a spin-1 ultracold Bose gas using mean field approach (MFA). For an antiferromagnetic (AF) inter- action, we have found the existence of the odd-even asymmetry in the Mott insulating (MI) lobes in presence of both the repulsive two and three body interactions. In case of a purely three body repulsive interaction, the higher order MI lobes stabilize against the superfluid phase. However, the spin nematic (singlet) formation is restricted upto the first (second) MI lobes for the former one, while there is neither any asymmetry nor spin nematic (singlet) formation is observed for the later case. The results are confirmed after carefully scrutinizing the spin eigen value and spin nematic order parameter for both the cases. On the other hand, for an attractive three body interaction, the third MI lobe is predominantly affected, where it completely engulfs the second and the fourth MI lobes at large values of the interaction strength. Albeit no significant change is observed beyond the fourth MI lobe. In the ferromagnetic case, the phase diagram shows similar features as that of a scalar Bose gas. We have compared our results on the MFA phase diagrams for both types of the interaction potential via a perturbation expansion in both the cases.

Magnetic adatoms in two and four terminal graphene nanoribbons: A comparison between their spin polarized transport

We study the charge and spin transport in two and four terminal graphene nanoribbons (GNR) decorated with random distribution of magnetic adatoms. The inclusion of the magnetic adatoms generates only the $z$-component of the spin polarized conductance via an exchange bias in the absence of Rashba spin-orbit interaction (SOI), while in presence of Rashba SOI, one is able to create all the three ($x$, $y$ and $z$) components. This has important consequences for possible spintronic applications. The charge conductance shows interesting behaviour near the zero of the Fermi energy. Where in presence of magnetic adatoms the familiar plateau at $2e^2/h$ vanishes, thereby transforming a quantum spin Hall insulating phase to an ordinary insulator. The local charge current and the local spin current provide an intuitive idea on the conductance features of the system. We found that, the local charge current is independent of Rashba SOI, while the three components of the local spin currents are sensitive to Rashba SOI. Moreover the fluctuations of the spin polarized conductance are found to be useful quantities as they show specific trends, that is, they enhance with increasing adatom densities. A two terminal GNR device seems to be better suited for possible spintronic applications.

Adatoms in graphene nanoribbons: conductance characteristics and quantum spin Hall effect

We study the charge and spin transport in a two terminal graphene nanoribbon (GNR) decorated with random Gold (Au) adatoms using a Kane-Mele model. Two commonly used GNRs, that is, the armchair graphene nanoribbon (AGNR) and the zigzag graphene nanoribbon (ZGNR) are compared and contrasted, which shows that in presence of Au adatoms, a somewhat robust $2e^2/h$ conductance plateau occurs in the case of AGNR around the zero of the Fermi energy, while in ZGNR this plateau is fragile. We show that this flat plateau, having a conductance value $2e^2/h$, is not a hallmark signature of a topologically nontrivial quantum spin Hall (QSH) state. Further the conductance decreases by a small amount with the density of adatoms. On the other hand, the spin polarized conductance shows distinct features of enhanced conductivity with increasing Au adatom concentration. Further the fluctuations of the spin polarized conductance have features that carry striking resemblance with the charge conductance profile of the GNRs.

Spin-1 Bose Hubbard model with nearest neighbour extended interaction

We have studied a spinor (F = 1) Bose gas in presence of the density-density interaction through the mean field approach and the perturbation theory for either sign of the spin dependent interaction, namely the antiferromagnetic (AF) and the ferromagnetic cases. In the AF case, the charge density wave (CDW) phase appears to be sandwiched between the Mott insulating (MI) and the supersolid phases for small values of the extended interaction strength. But the CDW phase completely occupies the MI lobe when the extended interaction strength is larger than a certain critical value related to the width of the MI lobes and hence opens up the possibilities of spin singlet and nematic CDW insulating phases. In the ferromagnetic case, the phase diagram shows similar features as that of the AF case and are in complete agreement with a spin-0 Bose gas. The perturbation expansion calculations nicely corroborate the mean field phase results in both these cases. Further, we extend our calculations in presence of a harmonic confinement and obtained the momentum distribution profile that is related to the absorption spectra in order to distinguish between different phases.

Spin Hall conductance in a Y-shaped junction device in presence of tunable spin-orbit coupling

We study spin Hall effect in a three terminal Y-shaped device in presence of tunable spin-orbit (SO) interactions via Landauer-Büttiker formalism. We have evolved a fabrication technique for creating different angular separation between the two arms of the Y-shaped device so as to investigate the effect of angular width on the spin Hall conductance (SHC). A smaller angular separation yields a larger conductance. Also arbitrary orientation of the spin quantization axes yields interesting three dimensional contour maps for the SHC corresponding to different angular separation of the Y-shaped device. The results explicitly show breaking of the spin rotational symmetry. Further a systematic study is carried out to compare and contrast between the different SO terms, such as Rashba and Dresselhaus SO interactions and the interplay of the angular separation therein.

Spin-1 bosons in an external magnetic field and a three body interaction potential

We perform a thorough study of the effect of an external magnetic field on a spin-1 ultracold Bose gas via mean field approach corresponding to the both signs of the spin dependent interaction. In contrast to some of the earlier studies, the magnetic field in our work is included through both the hopping frequencies (via Peierls coupling) and the zeeman interaction, thereby facilitating an explo- ration for competition between the two. The phase diagrams in the antiferromagnetic case shows that the Mott insulating (MI) phase with even particle occupancies is stable at low magnetic fields. At higher magnetic fields, due to a competition between the hopping and the zeeman interaction terms, the latter tries to destabilize the MI phase by suppressing the formation of singlet pairs, while the former tends to stabilize the MI phase. In the ferromagnetic case, the MI lobes become more stable with increasing flux strengths. Further inclusion of a three body interaction potential in order to ascertain its role on the phase diagram, we found that in absence of the magnetic field, the MI lobes become more stable compared to the superfluid (SF) phase and the location of the transition point for the MI-SF phase increases with increasing the three body interaction strength. A strong coupling perturbative calculation has also been done to provide a comparison with our mean field phase diagrams. Lastly, with inclusion of the external field, the insulating phases are found to be further stabilized by the three body interaction potential.

Interplay of Rashba spin orbit coupling and disorder in the conductance properties of a four terminal junction device

We report a thorough theoretical investigation on the quantum transport of a disordered four terminal device in the presence of Rashba spin orbit coupling (RSOC) in two dimensions. Specifically we compute the behaviour of the longitudinal (charge) conductance, spin Hall conductance and spin Hall conductance fluctuation as a function of the strength of disorder and Rashba spin orbit interaction using the Landauer Buttiker formalism via Green's function technique. Our numerical calculations reveal that both the conductances diminish with disorder. At smaller values of the RSOC parameter, the longitudinal and spin Hall conductances increase, while both vanish in the strong RSOC limit. The spin current is more drastically affected by both disorder and RSOC than its charge counterpart. The spin Hall conductance fluctuation does not show any universality in terms of its value and it depends on both disorder as well as on the RSOC strength. Thus the spin Hall conductance fluctuation has a distinct character compared to the fluctuation in the longitudinal conductance. Further one parameter scaling theory is studied to assess the transition to a metallic regime as claimed in literature and we find no confirmation about the emergence of a metallic state induced by RSOC.

Tunneling dynamics of correlated bosons in a double well potential

The quantum dynamics of a few bosons in a double well potential is studied using a Bose Hubbard model. We consider both signs for the on-site interparticle interaction and also investigated the situations where they are large and small. Interesting distinctive features are noted for the tunneling oscillations of these bosons corresponding to the above scenarios. Further, the sensitivity of the particle dynamics to the initial conditions has been studied. It is found that corresponding to an odd number of particles, such as three (or five), an initial condition of having unequal number of particles in the wells has interesting consequences, which is most discernible when the population difference between the wells is unity.

Percolation analysis of a disordered spinor Bose gas

We study the effects of an on-site disorder potential in a gas of spinor (spin-1) ultracold atoms loaded in an optical lattice corresponding to both ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic spin dependent interactions. Starting with a disordered spinor Bose-Hubbard model (SBHM) on a two dimensional square lattice, we observe the appearance of a Bose glass phase using the fraction of the lattice sites having finite superfluid order parameter and non integer local densities as an indicator. A precise distinction between three different types of phases namely, superfluid (SF), Mott insulator (MI) and Bose glass (BG) is done via a percolation analysis thereby demonstrating that a reliable enumeration of phases is possible at particular values of the parameters of the SBHM. Finally we present the phase diagram based on the above information for both antiferromagnetic and ferromagnetic interactions.

Investigating Dirty Crossover through Fidelity Susceptibility and Density of States

We investigate the BCS-BEC crossover in an ultracold atomic gas in the presence of disorder. The disorder is incorporated in the mean-field formalism through Gaussian fluctuations. We observe evolution to an asymmetric line-shape of fidelity susceptibility as a function of interaction coupling with increasing disorder strength which may point to an impending quantum phase transition. The asymmetric line-shape is further analyzed using the statistical tools of skewness and kurtosis. We extend our analysis to density of states (DOS) for a better understanding of the crossover in the disordered environment.

Multiple charge density wave transitions in Lu_{2} Ir_{3} Si_{5} single crystal

The physical properties of the single-crystalline samples of Lu_{2} Ir_{3} Si_{5} have been investigated by magnetic susceptibility, resistivity and heat capacity studies. We observed multiple charge density wave (CDW) transitions in all the measurements. A strong thermal hysteresis at these transitions suggests a possible first order CDW ordering. In addition, the first order nature is ascertained by a very narrow and a huge cusp (62 J/mol K) in the zero field specific heat data which also suggests a strong interchain coupling. By applying a field of 9T in the specific heat measurement, one of the CDW transitions is suppressed.
