Probing CP-violating Higgs contributions in gamma-gamma -> f anti-f through fermion polarization

We discuss the use of fermion polarization for studying neutral Higgs bosons at a photon collider. To this aim we construct polarization asymmetries which can isolate the contribution of a Higgs boson $ϕ$ in $γγ\to f \bar f$, $f=τ/t$, from that of the QED continuum. This can help in getting information on the $γγϕ$ coupling in case $ϕ$ is a CP eigenstate. We also construct CP-violating asymmetries which can probe CP mixing in case $ϕ$ has indeterminate CP. Furthermore, we take the MSSM with CP violation as an example to demonstrate the potential of these asymmetries in a numerical analysis. We find that these asymmetries are sensitive to the presence of a Higgs boson as well as its CP properties over a wide range of MSSM parameters. In particular, the method suggested can cover the region where a light Higgs boson may have been missed by LEP due to CP violation in the Higgs sector, and may be missed as well at the LHC.

Lepton distribution as a probe of new physics in production and decay of the t quark and its polarization

We investigate the possibilities of studying new physics in various processes of t-quark production using kinematical distributions of the secondary lepton coming from decay of t quarks. We show that the angular distributions of the secondary lepton are insensitive to the anomalous tbW vertex and hence are pure probes of new physics in a generic process of t-quark production. The energy distribution of the lepton is distinctly affected by anomalous tbW couplings and can be used to analyze them independent of the production process of t quarks. The effects of t polarization on the distributions of the decay lepton are demonstrated for top-pair production process at a gamma-gamma collider mediated by a heavy Higgs boson.

Probing CP-violating contact interactions in e+e- --> HZ with polarized beams

We examine very general four-point interactions arising due to new physics contributing to the Higgs production process e+e- --> HZ. We write all possible forms for these interactions consistent with Lorentz invariance. We allow the possibility of CP violation. Contributions to the process from anomalous ZZH and gammaZH interactions studied earlier arise as a special case of our four-point amplitude. Expressions for polar and azimuthal angular distributions of Z arising from the interference of the four-point contribution with the standard-model contribution in the presence of longitudinal and transverse beam polarization are obtained. An interesting CP-odd and T-odd contribution is found to be present only when both electron and positron beams are transversely polarized. Such a contribution is absent when only anomalous ZZH and gammaZH interactions are considered. We show how angular asymmetries can be used to constrain CP-odd interactions at a linear collider operating at a centre-of-mass energy of 500 GeV with transverse beam polarization.

Space-time structure of new physics with polarized beams at the linear collider

We approach the issue of the discovery of new physics at high energies associated with the proposed International Linear Collider in the presence of longitudinal as well as transverse electron and positron beam polarization. We determine the beam polarization dependence and the angular distribution of a particle of arbitrary spin in a one-particle inclusive final state produced in e+ e- collisions through the interference of gamma or Z amplitude with the amplitude from new interactions having arbitrary space-time structure. We thus extend the results of Dass and Ross proposed at the time of the discovery of neutral currents, to beyond the standard model currents. We also extend the case of e+ e- annihilation in the s-channel to the production of bosons due to t- and u-channel processes. Our work provides an approach to model-independent determination of the space-time structure of beyond the standard model interactions. We briefly discuss applications of the framework to popular extensions of the standard model, and demonstrate that our framework is general enough to account for certain results in the minimal supersymmetric standard model.

Decay of Spin-One Particle into Two Photons in Presence of Uniform External Magnetic Field

Yang's theorem states that an initial J=1 state cannot decay into two photons. Because of this result some reactions relating to elementary particles or atomic transitions can be ruled out. The theorem is not valid in the presence of background electric or magnetic fields. In this work we show that the decay of a J=1 particle into two photons is permitted by Bose symmetry and rotational invariance when the background of the decay process is not pure vacuum but contains an external classical magnetic/electric field. We also discuss constraints on these amplitudes from {\bf CP} invariance.

New physics in e+ e- -> Z gamma with polarized beams

We present a complete description of angular distributions in the presence of new interactions for the process e+ e- -> Z gamma with polarized beams at future linear colliders, by considering the most general form-factors allowed by gauge invariance. We include the possibility of CP violation, and classify the couplings according to their CP properties. Chirality conserving and chirality violating couplings give rise to distinct dependence on beam polarization. We present a comprehensive discussion including both types of couplings and provide a detailed comparison of the effects due to each. We discuss some selected asymmetries which would enable isolating effects of the CP-violating form-factors. We also present sensitivities on the corresponding couplings achievable at a future linear collider with realistic polarization and luminosity.

Transverse beam polarization and CP violation in e+ e- -> gamma Z with contact interactions

We consider the most general gauge-invariant, chirality-conserving contact interactions in the process e +e- -> gamma Z, of the type proposed Abraham and Lampe, in order to explore the possibility of CP violation at future linear colliders in the presence of polarized beams. We hereby extend recent work on CP violation due to anomalous triple-gauge boson vertices. We isolate combinations of couplings which are genuinely CP violating, pointing out which of these can only be studied with the use of transverse polarization. We place constraints on these couplings that could arise from suitably defined CP-odd asymmetries, considering realistic polarization (either longitudinal or transverse) of 80% and 60% for the electron and positron beams respectively, and with an integrated luminosity \int dt L of 500 fb^{-1} at a centre of mass energy of \sqrt{s}=500 GeV.

Transverse beam polarization and limits on leptoquark couplings in e+e- --> t tbar

It is shown that if electron and positron beams at a linear collider are transversely polarized, azimuthal asymmetries of the final-state top quark in e+e- --> t tbar can be used to probe a combination of couplings of left and right chiralities in a scalar leptoquark model. The CP-conserving azimuthal asymmetry would be a sensitive test of the chirality violating couplings. A linear collider operating at sqrt{s}=500 GeV and having transverse polarizations of 80% and 60% respectively for the e- and e+ beams, can put a limit of the order of 0.025 on the product of the left and right chirality leptoquark couplings (in units of the electromagnetic coupling constant), with a leptoquark mass of 1 TeV and for an integrated luminosity of 500 inverse fb. The CP-violating azimuthal asymmetry, which would provide a direct test of CP-violating phases in leptoquark couplings, can be constrained to the same level of accuracy. However, this limit is uninteresting in view of the much better indirect limit from the electric dipole moment of the electron.

Role of transverse polarization in constraining new physics

Transverse polarization (TP) can be used to study interference of (S,P) or T type couplings from new physics with the SM contribution. In e+e- -> t tbar, a CP-odd azimuthal asymmetry can constrain the scale Lambda of new (S,P) or T contact interactions to be higher than about 7 TeV for total c.m. energy of 500 GeV, integrated luminosity of 500 inverse fb, and assuming 80% e- and 60% e+ polarizations in opposite directions. In e+e- -> gamma Z without chirality violation, but with CP-violating anomalous gamma-gamma-Z couplings, an azimuthal asymmetry can probe the anomalous coupling down to about 10^{-2}.

CP violation at a linear collider with transverse polarization

We show how transverse beam polarization at $e^+e^-$ colliders can provide a novel means to search for CP violation by observing the distribution of a single final-state particle without measuring its spin. We suggest an azimuthal asymmetry which singles out interference terms between standard model contribution and new-physics scalar or tensor effective interactions in the limit in which the electron mass is neglected. Such terms are inaccessible with unpolarized or longitudinally polarized beams. The asymmetry is sensitive to CP violation when the transverse polarizations of the electron and positron are in opposite senses. The sensitivity of planned future linear colliders to new-physics CP violation in $e^+e^- \to t \bar{t}$ is estimated in a model-independent parametrization. It would be possible to put a bound of $\sim 7$ TeV on the new-physics scale $Λ$ at the 90% C.L. for $\sqrt{s}=500$ GeV and $\int dt {\cal L}=500 {\rm fb}^{-1}$, with transverse polarizations of 80% and 60% for the electron and positron beams, respectively.

Transverse beam polarization and CP-violating triple-gauge-boson couplings in e+e- -> gamma Z

We show that an anomalous CP-violating gamma-gamma-Z vertex gives rise to a novel asymmetry with transversely polarized electron and positron beams in the process e+e- -> gamma Z. This asymmetry, which is odd under naive time reversal, is proportional to the real part of the gamma-gamma-Z CP-violating coupling. This is in contrast to the simple forward-backward asymmetry of the gamma (or Z) with unpolarized or longitudinally polarized beams studied earlier, which is even under naive time reversal, and is proportional to the imaginary part. We estimate the sensitivity of future experiments to the determination of CP-odd gamma-gamma-Z and gamma-Z-Z couplings using these asymmetries and transversely polarized beams.

Single decay-lepton angular distributions in polarized e+e- --> t tbar and simple angular asymmetries as a measure of CP-violating top dipole couplings

In the presence of an electric dipole coupling of t-tbar to a photon, and an analogous "weak" dipole coupling to the Z, CP violation in the process e+e- --> t tbar results in modified polarization of the top and anti-top. This polarization can be analyzed by studying the angular distributions of decay charged leptons when the top or anti-top decays leptonically. Analytic expressions are presented for these distributions when either t or tbar decays leptonically, including O(alpha_s) QCD corrections in the soft-gluon approximation. The angular distributions are insensitive to anomalous interactions in top decay. Two types of simple CP-violating polar-angle asymmetries and two azimuthal asymmetries, which do not need the full reconstruction of the t or tbar, are studied. Independent 90% CL limits that may be obtained on the real and imaginary parts of the electric and weak dipole couplings at a linear collider operating at sqrt{s}=500 GeV with integrated luminosity 500 fb^{-1} and also at sqrt{s}=1000 GeV with integrated luminosity 1000 fb^{-1} have been evaluated. The effect of longitudinal electron and/or positron beam polarizations has been included.

Radiatively Generated $ν_e$ Oscillations: General Analysis, Textures and Models

We study the consequences of assuming that the mass scale $Δ_{odot}$ corresponding to the solar neutrino oscillations and mixing angle $U_{e3}$ corresponding to the electron neutrino oscillation at CHOOZ are radiatively generated through the standard electroweak gauge interactions. All the leptonic mass matrices having zero $Δ_{odot}$ and $U_{e3}$ at a high scale lead to a unique low energy value for the $Δ_{odot}$ which is determined by the (known) size of the radiative corrections, solar and the atmospheric mixing angle and the Majorana mass of the neutrino observed in neutrinoless double beta decay. This prediction leads to the following consequences: ($i$) The MSSM radiative corrections generate only the dark side of the solar neutrino solutions. ($ii$) The inverted mass hierarchy ($m,-m,0$) at the high scale fails in generating the LMA solution but it can lead to the LOW or vacuum solutions. ($iii$) The $Δ_{odot}$ generated in models with maximal solar mixing at a high scale is zero to the lowest order in the radiative parameter. It tends to get suppressed as a result of this and lies in the vacuum region. We discuss specific textures which can lead to the LMA solution in the present framework and provide a gauge theoretical realization of this in the context of the seesaw model.

Predictive Framework with a Pair of Degenerate Neutrinos at a high scale

Radiative generation of the solar scale $Δ_{\odot}$ is discussed in the presence of leptonic CP violation. We assume that both the solar scale and $U_{e3}$ are zero at a high scale and the weak radiative corrections generate them. It is shown that all leptonic mass matrices satisfying these requirements lead to a unique prediction $Δ_{\odot} \cos 2θ_{\odot}\approx 4 δ_τ\sin^2 θ_A |m_{ee}|^2$ for the solar scale in terms of the radiative correction parameter $δ_τ$, the physical solar (atmospheric) mixing angles $θ_{odot} (θ_A)$ and the Majorana neutrino mass $m_{ee}$ probed in neutrinoless double beta decay. This relation is independent of the mixing matrix and CP-violating phases at the high scale. The presence of CP-violating phases leads to dilution in the solar mixing angle defined at the high scale. Because of this, bi-maximal mixing pattern at the high energy leads to large but non-maximal solar mixing in the low-energy theory. An illustrative model with this feature is discussed.

Study of CP Property of the Higgs at a Photon Collider using $γγ\to t\bar t\to l X $

We study possible effects of CP violation in the Higgs sector on $t\bar t$ production at a $γγ$-collider. These studies are performed in a model-independent way in terms of six form-factors $\{\Re(S_γ), \Im(S_γ), \Re(P_γ), \Im(P_γ), S_t, P_t\}$ which parametrize the CP mixing in the Higgs sector, and a strategy for their determination is developed. We observe that the angular distribution of the decay lepton from $t/\bar t$ produced in this process is independent of any CP violation in the $tbW$ vertex and hence best suited for studying CP mixing in the Higgs sector. Analytical expressions are obtained for the angular distribution of leptons in the c.m. frame of the two colliding photons for a general polarization state of the incoming photons. We construct combined asymmetries in the initial state lepton (photon) polarization and the final state lepton charge. They involve CP even ($x$'s) and odd ($y$'s) combinations of the mixing parameters. We study limits up to which the values of $x$ and $y$, with only two of them allowed to vary at a time, can be probed by measurements of these asymmetries, using circularly polarized photons. We use the numerical values of the asymmetries predicted by various models to discriminate among them. We show that this method can be sensitive to the loop-induced CP violation in the Higgs sector in the MSSM.

How do we know the charges of quarks?

Experimental tests performed in the past to determine quark charges are reviewed. It is pointed out that only experiments involving two real photons can really distinguish between the Gell-Mann-Zweig scheme of fractional charges from the Han-Nambu scheme of integer charges in the context of a theory with gauged colour interactions. While many experiments with two real photons have been performed, the only experiment with a definitive statement on quark charges was one on hard scattering of real photons at CERN. Some theoretical issues not fully resolved are pointed out.

CP-Violation in the Production of Tau-Leptons at TESLA with Beam Polarization

We study the prospects of discovering CP-violation in the production of tau-leptons in the reaction {e+e- --> tau+tau- at TESLA, an e+e- linear collider with center-of-mass energies of 500 or even 800 GeV. Non-vanishing expectation values of certain correlations between the momenta of the decay products of the two tau leptons would signalthe presence of CP-violation beyond the standard model. We study how longitudinal beam polarization of the electron and positron beams will enhance these correlations. We find that T-odd and T-even vector correlations are well suited for the measurements of the real and imaginary parts of the electric dipole form factors. We expect measurements of the real part with a precision of roughly 10^-20 ecm and of the imaginary part of 10^-17 ecm. This compares well with the size of the expected effects in many extensions of the standard model.
