Positivity in Massive Spin-3/2 EFTs and the Planck-Suppressed Neighbourhood of Supergravity

It is well known that a strictly massless spin-$3/2$ particle can interact consistently only within supergravity. Recently, positivity arguments have shown that an effective field theory of a massive Majorana spin-$3/2$ particle admits a smooth $m \to 0$ limit only if a graviton is present and the four-fermion contact interactions are tuned to the values dictated by $\mathcal{N}=1$ supergravity. In this work, we investigate how this limit is approached at finite mass. Assuming that the graviton $t$-channel pole can be discarded, we derive non-forward, tree-level dispersive bounds on massive spin-3/2 contact operators and determine the region of effective couplings consistent with unitarity and analyticity. For sufficiently small $m$, we find that the allowed parameter space forms a bounded, Planck-suppressed neighbourhood of the supergravity point, defined by the supergravity values of the four-fermion couplings. The supergravity point lies on the boundary of this region. In the regime $m \ll M_{\rm Pl}$, the volume of the allowed region scales parametrically as \[ \mathrm{Vol} \sim \frac{m^{6}}{M_{\rm Pl}^{6}} \, , \] and shrinks to zero as $m \to 0$, smoothly reproducing the massless-limit results. The allowed region becomes unbounded when mass approaches the Planck scale. We further analyze the effect of including additional light scalar and pseudo-scalar degrees of freedom, motivated by the Polonyi model, and find that their couplings are also bounded in a way similar to the contact couplings and that it doesn't enlarge the allowed contact coupling space.

Nicolai maps and uniqueness in the light-cone gauge

We compute the Nicolai map for the supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory, in the light-cone gauge, to the second order in the coupling constant for all critical dimensions (d=3,4,6,10). The process of integrating out unphysical degrees of freedom in this gauge, produces a four fermion interaction term. We show that, to the order investigated here, this term is harmless. We demonstrate the existence of a particularly `simple' map in d=4 in the light-cone gauge and address the issue of uniqueness in the context of the map. We also investigate the map in the light-cone superspace in d=4.

Deriving interaction vertices in higher derivative theories

We derive cubic interaction vertices for a class of higher-derivative theories involving three arbitrary integer spin fields. This derivation uses the requirement of closure of the Poincarè algebra in four-dimensional flat spacetime. We find two varieties of permitted structures at the cubic level and eliminate one variety, which is proportional to the equations of motion, using suitable field redefinitions. We then consider soft theorems for field theories with higher-derivative interactions and construct amplitudes in these theories using the inverse-soft approach.

Soft factors and interaction vertices from light-cone actions

Universal factors associated with the emission of a soft boson in gauge theories and gravity, formulated in the light-cone gauge, are presented. The inverse-soft method, for constructing higher-point amplitudes from lower-point ones, using these factors is reviewed. These ideas are then examined in (light-cone) superspace and applied to both the N=4 super Yang-Mills and N=8 supergravity theories. One highlight is a compact result for the quartic interaction vertex in N=8 supergravity, a crucial ingredient for finiteness analyses.

Perturbative linearization of supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory

Supersymmetric gauge theories are characterized by the existence of a transformation of the bosonic fields (Nicolai map) such that the Jacobi determinant of the transformation equals the product of the Matthews-Salam-Seiler and Faddeev-Popov determinants. This transformation had been worked out to second order in the coupling constant. In this paper, we extend this result (and the framework itself) to third order in the coupling constant. A diagrammatic approach in terms of tree diagrams, aiming to extend this map to arbitrary orders, is outlined. This formalism bypasses entirely the use of anti-commuting variables, as well as issues concerning the (non-)existence of off-shell formulations for these theories. It thus offers a fresh perspective on supersymmetric gauge theories and, in particular, the ubiquitous $\mathcal N{=}\,4$ theory.

Supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory in D=6 without anti-commuting variables

Supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory is formulated in six dimensions, without the use of anti-commuting variables. This is achieved using a new Nicolai map, to third order in the coupling constant. This is the second such map in six dimensions and highlights a potential ambiguity in the formalism.

Higher spins, quadratic forms and amplitudes

The light-cone Hamiltonians for spin 1 and spin 2 fields, describing both the pure and the maximally supersymmetric theories, may be expressed as quadratic forms. In this paper, we show that this feature extends to light-cone higher spin theories. To first order in the coupling constant, we prove that the higher spin Hamiltonians, with and without supersymmetry, are quadratic forms. Scattering amplitude structures emerge naturally in this framework and we relate the momentum space vertex in a supersymmetric higher spin theory to the corresponding vertex in the N=4 Yang-Mills theory.

Supersymmetric Yang-Mills Theories: not quite the usual perspective

In this paper, we take up an old thread of development concerning the characterization of supersymmetric theories without any use of anticommuting variables that goes back to one of the authors' very early work [1]. Our special focus here will be on the formulation of supersymmetric Yang-Mills theories, extending previous results beyond $D=4$ dimensions. This perspective is likely to provide new insights into these theories, and in particular the maximally extended $N=4$ theory. As a new result we present a novel derivation of the admissible dimensions for interacting (pure) super-Yang-Mills theories to exist. This article is dedicated to the memory of Peter Freund, amongst many other things an early contributor to supersymmetry, and an author of one of the very first papers on superconformal gauge theories [2]. The final section contains some personal reminiscences of H.N.'s encounters with Peter Freund.
