Reappraisal of the Constraints on Heavy Axion-like Particles from Gamma-Ray Bursts

We reassess existing limits and derive new constraints on heavy axion-like particle (ALP) coupling to photons using gamma-ray bursts (GRBs). ALPs can be produced in the hot dense fireball plasma during the initial stage of GRB outflow, thus potentially disrupting the primary fireball and altering the GRB luminosity. We consider the ALP production rate for various GRB parameters in two different energy injection scenarios of GRB fireball formation, and point out that ALP production is less efficient than previously assumed unless a GRB event is exceptionally energetic. We update the existing energy loss bounds using more realistic GRB parameters. We also point out that in the region of parameter space previously constrained by GRB luminosity criterion, ALP production turns out to be still efficient enough to form a secondary fireball via ALP decay to two photons and their subsequent annihilation to electron-positron pair. This secondary fireball reprocesses the gamma-rays from heavy ALP decay into $X$-rays, emitted isotropically from its surface, thus allowing us to probe $\mathcal{O}(100~\mathrm{MeV})$-scale ALPs indirectly using $X$-ray (or future MeV gamma-ray) telescopes, not necessarily directed toward the GRB jet itself. We show that the future point-source sensitivity of $X$-ray and MeV gamma-ray telescopes may allow us to constrain new ALP parameter space.

Gravitational waves from the Axiverse

Models with axion like particles (ALPs) often predict the formation of a string-domain wall network in the early universe. We study how such networks of defects appear in the context of string theory, and discuss the conditions for their long-term stability. In a scenario with several axions, we show how a bias term in the potential arises naturally from the effects of multiple instantons, leading to the eventual decay of the domain walls. We find that the annihilation of the network leads to the generation of a stochastic gravitational wave background (SGWB) with a spectrum that has characteristic contributions from both walls and strings. The unique shape of the spectrum provides an opportunity to probe string theory axions at existing and upcoming observatories. The extinction of the network is also accompanied by the production of different axion mass eigenstates. In a region of the parameter space, the lightest eigenstate can be long lived and make up the dark matter in the universe.

Adiabatic Conversion of ALPs into Dark Photon Dark Matter

We introduce a mechanism by which a misaligned ALP can be dynamically converted into a dark photon in the presence of a background magnetic field. An abundance of non-relativistic ALPs will convert to dark photons with momentum of order the inhomogeneities in the background field; therefore a highly homogeneous field will produce non-relativistic dark photons without relying on any redshifting of their momenta. Taking hidden sector magnetic fields produced by a first order phase transition, the mechanism can reproduce the relic abundance of dark matter for a wide range of dark photon masses down to $10^{-13}$ eV.

Old neutron stars as a new probe of relic neutrinos and sterile neutrino dark matter

We study the kinetic cooling (heating) of old neutron stars due to coherent scattering with relic neutrinos (sterile neutrino dark matter) via Standard Model neutral-current interactions. We take into account several important physical effects, such as gravitational clustering, coherent enhancement, neutron degeneracy and Pauli blocking. We find that the anomalous cooling of nearby neutron stars due to relic neutrino scattering might actually be observable by current and future telescopes operating in the optical to near-infrared frequency band, such as the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST), provided there is a large local relic overdensity that is still allowed. Similarly, the anomalous heating of neutron stars due to coherent scattering with keV-scale sterile neutrino dark matter, could also be observed by JWST or future telescopes, which would probe hitherto unexplored parameter space in the sterile neutrino mass-mixing plane.

Constraining Vector Dark Matter with Neutrino experiments

Vector Dark Matter (VDM) that couples to lepton flavor ($L_e$, $L_μ$, $L_τ$) acts similarly to a chemical potential for the neutrino flavor eigenstates and modifies neutrino oscillations. VDM imparts unique signatures such as time and directional dependence with longer baselines giving better sensitivity. We use the non-observation of such a signal at Super-Kamiokande to rule out the existence of VDM in a region of parameter space several orders of magnitude beyond other constraints and show the projected reach of future experiments such as DUNE.

Action Bar Adaptations for One-Handed Use of Smartphones

One-handed use of smartphones is a common scenario in daily life. However, use of smartphones with thumb gives limited reachability to the complete screen. This problem is more severe when targets are located at corners of the device or far from the thumb's reachable area. Adjusting screen size mitigates this issue by making screen UI to be at the reach of the thumb. However, it does not utilize available screen space. We propose UI adaptation for action bar to address this. With our results, designed adaptations are faster for non-dominant hand and provides significantly better grip stability for holding smartphones. Intriguingly, users perceived our system as faster, more comfortable and providing safer grip when compared with the existing placement of action bar. We conclude our work with video analyses for grip patterns and recommendations for UI designers.

Black Hole Production of Monopoles in the Early Universe

In the early universe, evaporating black holes heat up the surrounding plasma and create a temperature profile around the black hole that can be more important than the black hole itself. As an example, we demonstrate how the hot plasma surrounding evaporating black holes can efficiently produce monopoles via the Kibble-Zurek mechanism. In the case where black holes reheat the universe, reheat temperatures above $\sim 500$ GeV can already lead to monopoles overclosing the universe.

Non-linearly realized discrete symmetries

While non-linear realizations of continuous symmetries feature derivative interactions and have no potential, non-linear realizations of discrete symmetries feature non-derivative interactions and have a highly suppressed potential. These Goldstone bosons of discrete symmetries have a non-zero potential, but the potential generated from quantum corrections is inherently very highly suppressed. We explore various discrete symmetries and to what extent the potential is suppressed for each of them.

Wavelet Transform-Based Analysis of QRS complex in ECG Signals

In the present paper we have reported a wavelet based time-frequency multiresolution analysis of an ECG signal. The ECG (electrocardiogram), which records hearts electrical activity, is able to provide with useful information about the type of Cardiac disorders suffered by the patient depending upon the deviations from normal ECG signal pattern. We have plotted the coefficients of continuous wavelet transform using Morlet wavelet. We used different ECG signal available at MIT-BIH database and performed a comparative study. We demonstrated that the coefficient at a particular scale represents the presence of QRS signal very efficiently irrespective of the type or intensity of noise, presence of unusually high amplitude of peaks other than QRS peaks and Base line drift errors. We believe that the current studies can enlighten the path towards development of very lucid and time efficient algorithms for identifying and representing the QRS complexes that can be done with normal computers and processors.
