Asymptotic-Preserving and Well-Balanced Linearly Implicit IMEX Schemes for the Anelastic Limit of the Isentropic Euler Equations with Gravity

We consider the compressible Euler system with anelastic scaling, modeling isentropic flows under the influence of gravity. In the zero-Mach-number limit, the solution of the compressible Euler system converges to a variable density anelastic incompressible limit system. In this work, we present the design and analysis of a class of higher-order linearly implicit IMEX Runge-Kutta schemes that are asymptotic preserving, i.e., they respect the transitory nature of the governing equations in the limit. The presence of gravitational potential warrants the incorporation of the well-balancing property. The scheme is developed as a novel combination of a penalization of a linear steady state, a finite-volume balance-preserving reconstruction, and a source term discretization preserving steady states. The penalization plays a crucial role in obtaining a linearly implicit scheme, and well-balanced flux-source discretization ensures accuracy in very low Mach number regimes. Some results of numerical case studies are presented to corroborate the theoretical assertions.

Asymptotic Preserving Linearly Implicit Additive IMEX-RK Finite Volume Schemes for Low Mach Number Isentropic Euler Equations

We consider the compressible Euler equations of gas dynamics with isentropic equation of state. Standard numerical schemes for the Euler equations suffer from stability and accuracy issues in the low Mach regime. These failures are attributed to the transitional behaviour of the governing equations from compressible to incompressible solution in the limit of vanishing Mach number. In this paper we introduce an extra flux term to the momentum flux. This extra term is recognised by looking at the constraints of the incompressible limit system. As a consequence the flux terms enable us to get a suitable splitting, so that an additive IMEX-RK scheme could be applied. Using an elliptic reformulation the scheme boils down to just solving a linear elliptic problem for the density and then explicit updates for the momentum. The IMEX schemes developed are shown to be formally asymptotically consistent with the low Mach number limit of the Euler equations and are shown to be linearly $L^2$ stable. A second order space time fully discrete scheme is obtained in the finite volume framework using a combination of Rusanov flux for the explicit part and simple central differences for the implicit part. Results of numerical case studies are reported which elucidate the theoretical assertions regarding the scheme and its robustness.

High order Asymptotic Preserving penalized numerical schemes for the Euler-Poisson system in the quasi-neutral limit

In this work, we focus on the development of high-order Implicit-Explicit (IMEX) finite volume numerical methods for plasmas in quasineutral regimes. At large temporal and spatial scales, plasmas tend to be quasineutral, meaning that the local net charge density is nearly zero. However, at small time and spatial scales, measured by the the Debye length, quasineutrality breaks down. In such regimes, standard numerical methods face severe stability constraints, rendering them practically unusable. To address this issue, we introduce and analyze a class of penalized IMEX Runge-Kutta methods for the Euler-Poisson (EP) system, specifically designed to handle the quasineutral limit. These schemes are uniformly stable with respect to the Debye length and degenerate into high-order methods as the quasineutral limit is approached. Several numerical tests confirm that the proposed methods exhibit the desired properties.

Analysis of an Asymptotic Preserving Low Mach Number Accurate IMEX-RK Scheme for the Wave Equation System

In this paper the analysis of an asymptotic preserving (AP) IMEX-RK finite volume scheme for the wave equation system in the zero Mach number limit is presented. The accuracy of a numerical scheme at low Mach numbers is its ability to maintain the solution close to the incompressible solution for all times, and this can be formulated in terms of the invariance of a space of constant densities and divergence-free velocities. An IMEX-RK methodology is employed to obtain a time semi-discrete scheme, and a space-time fully-discrete scheme is derived by using standard finite volume techniques. The existence of a unique numerical solution, its uniform stability with respect to the Mach number, the AP property, and the accuracy at low Mach numbers are established for both time semi-discrete, and space-time fully-discrete schemes. Extensive numerical case studies confirm uniform second order convergence of the scheme with respect to the Mach number, and all the above-mentioned properties.
