Effect of temperature on measurement of fundamental constants using white dwarfs in Gaia-EDR3 survey

Fundamental constants are crucial for comprehending physical mechanisms, but their measurements contain uncertainties due to experimental limitations. We investigate the impact of system temperature on these uncertainties using nearby white dwarfs observed in the Gaia Early Data Release 3 (EDR3) survey. Using the structures of these white dwarfs, we show that the variation in system temperature can affect the accuracy of measurements for fundamental parameters such as the fine-structure constant and the proton-to-electron mass ratio. This exploration emphasizes the importance of considering the energy of a system while putting bounds on the values of fundamental constants.

Velocity dispersion of dark matter deficient ultra-diffuse galaxies: A case for modified gravity

The line of sight velocity dispersion of the ultra-diffuse galaxies (UDGs) NGC1052-DF2 and NGC1052-DF4 have been reasonably explained only with the baryonic matter, without requiring any dark matter contribution. The comparable ratio between the baryonic and halo mass also ascertain the above claim for the two dark matter deficit galaxies. This paves the way for analyzing alternative gravity theories such as the $f(R)$ gravity and the Renormalization Group correction to General Relativity (RGGR). The analysis of the line of sight velocity dispersion shows that the choice of $f(R)$ gravity models such as Taylor expanded $f(R)$ about $R=0$ or a simple power law model of choice $R^n$ is consistent with the observational data. Similar statistical analysis is done for the RGGR and is also found to be a viable explanation for the observed velocity dispersion. We perform a global fit of the model parameters together with both the UDGs. The coupling parameters of the theories are considered as the global ones, and local variables such as the scale parameters are considered to be dependent on the individual galaxy.

Shadow and Weak Gravitational lensing of rotating traversable Wormhole in Non-homogeneous Plasma Space-time

In this work, we have studied the behavior of null geodesics within a rotating wormhole space-time in non-magnetized pressure-less plasma. By focusing on the dispersion relation of the plasma and disregarding its direct gravitational effects, we examine how light rays traverse in the mentioned space-time. A key highlight of the work is the necessity of a specific plasma distribution profile to establish a generalized Carter's constant, shedding light on the importance of this parameter. Furthermore, we have derived analytical formulas to distinguish the shadow boundary across various plasma profiles, uncovering a fascinating trend of diminishing shadow size as plasma density increases. Intriguingly, certain limits of the plasma parameters result in the complete disappearance of the shadow. When calculating the deflection angle by a wormhole in plasma space-time, we observe a distinct pattern: the angle decreases as the plasma parameter rises in non-homogeneous plasma space-time, diverging from the behavior observed in homogeneous plasma space-time. Also, leveraging observational data from M$87^{\ast}$, we establish constraints on the throat radius. Furthermore, minimum shadow diameters provide valuable constraints for the radial and latitudinal plasma parameters.

Scalar fluid in scalar-tensor gravity from an equivalent picture of thermodynamic and fluid descriptions of gravitational dynamics

We revisit the thermodynamic description of fluid, represented by scalar field in scalar-tensor gravity theory through a general approach to study the thermodynamics of relativistic fluids. In order to identify the fluid energy-momentum tensor, contrary to the existing way, we use equivalent description of gravitational dynamics both in Jordan and Einstein frames as thermodynamical identity and fluid equation on a generic null surface. Such an approach provides the energy-momentum tensors for scalar fluid as that of an ideal fluid in both the frames. We then mention few issues in the existing way of using Eckart's formalism for an ideal fluid. Our investigation suggests that the Eckart's frame may not be suitable to consider ideal fluid. Consequently a possible alternative description, valid in other than Eckart's frame, is being suggested for a general ideal fluid. Based on this we obtain a unified thermodynamic description in both Jordan and Einstein frames from our identified energy-momentum tensors. Finally, the relations between thermodynamic entities on different frames are being put forwarded. Thus, the description in either of the frames is enough to provide the complete picture.

Nonlinearly charged black holes: Shadow and Thin-accretion disk

In this paper, we explore the effect of non-linear electrodynamics (NLED) parameters and magnetic charges on various aspects of black holes, like how they bend light, how they emit radiation, and how they appear as a shadow by considering a thin accretion disk model. We initially examine the overall behavior of the photonsphere and the corresponding shadow silhouette under the effects of these parameters. Using the EHT data for Sgr. A* and M87*, we aim to find constraints for $q_m$. Our results indicate that M87* gives better constraints, and as the value of $β$ is varied to increase, the constrained range for $q_m$ widens. At lower values of $q_m$, we find that the shadow radius is close to the observed value. Then, we study different things like how much energy the black hole emits, the temperature of the disk around it, and the kind of light it gives off. We also look at how the black hole shadow appears in different situations. We also study how matter falls onto the black hole from all directions. Finally, we investigate how the magnetic charge affects all these things when we take into account a theory called NLED along with gravity. This study helps us understand the complex relationship between magnetic charge and black holes.

Shadow of quantum extended Kruskal black hole and its super-radiance property

We perform the shadow calculation of the loop quantum gravity motivated regular black hole recently proposed by Ashtekar, Olmedo and Singh (will be termed AOS black hole hereafter). In the process, we also construct the rotating loop quantum gravity inspired solution of the originally proposed static spherically symmetric AOS black hole by applying the modified Newman-Janis algorithm. We study the quantum effects on the shadows of both the non-rotating and rotating loop quantum black hole solutions. It is observed that the general shape of the shadow for non-rotating AOS black hole is circular in shape as is expected for its classical counter part too, but the presence of loop quantum gravity inspired modification contracts the shadow radius and the effect reduces with the increase in the mass of the black hole. On a similar note, in the rotating situation, we find contraction in shadow radius due to quantum effects and the tapered nature of the shadow as expected from the classical Kerr case. However, instead of the symmetrical contraction, like non-rotating one, we found more contraction on one side relative to the other when we compare our result with the shadow of the Kerr black hole. We finally studied super-radiance in rotating AOS background and observed that the super-radiance condition for massless scalar field is identical to that of the Kerr case with the rotation of the BH being more compared to Kerr in the low mass regime. With an increase in mass of the rotating AOS black hole, the difference from Kerr starts to become insignificant.

Constraints on the mass and self-coupling of Ultra-Light Scalar Field Dark Matter using observational limits on galactic central mass

It is well known that Ultra-Light Dark Matter (ULDM), usually scalar fields of mass $m \sim 10^{-22}~{\rm eV}$, can solve some of the outstanding problems of the Cold Dark Matter (CDM) paradigm. Such a scalar field could have non-negligible self-coupling $λ$. In this work, using the known observational upper limit on the amount of centrally concentrated dark matter in a galaxy, we arrive at the observational constraints in the $λ- m$ (self coupling $-$ mass) parameter space. It is found that the observational limit on the mass $m$ of the ULDM depends upon the sign and strength of the self-interactions. We demonstrate that, for $m \sim 10^{-22}~{\rm eV}$, self-coupling values of ${\cal O}(10^{-96})$ (corresponding to a scattering length of $a_s \sim 10^{-82}~{\rm m}$) can be probed using limits on the dark matter mass within 10 pc of the centre of M87 galaxy. Our analysis suggests that if Ultra Light Axions (ULAs) form all of dark matter, its mass has to be less than $\sim 6 \times 10^{-23}$ eV.

A note on the effects of magnetic field on holographic fermions with dipole-like coupling

In this note, we study the effects of non-zero magnetic field on the fermion spectral function coupled with a non-minimal coupling in the background of a dyonic $AdS_4$ black hole. The system can be reduced to a non magnetic one with the momentum being quantized into Landau levels $n$. By tuning the coupling parameter, we study its effect on the Fermi level and the quasiparticle width. We found an interesting scaling relation between the decay width and the coupling parameter, with a universal scaling exponent which is independent of the levels $n$.

Studying the holographic Fermi surface in the scalar induced anisotropic background

Holographic properties of a finite density fermion system have been shown to exhibit many interesting behaviours which can be observed in future. In this paper, we study low energy fermion properties in the framework of the holographic Mott-Insulator system. We study the nature of the Fermi surface and its evolution by tuning two types of dipole couplings in the bulk. We further introduce translational symmetry breaking complex scalar field, which is assumed to couple with the holographic fermions. The symmetry breaking background induced by the scalar field is known as Q-lattice. We calculate the fermion spectral function, which captures the low energy behaviour of the system. By tuning the dipole parameters and the non-normalizable component of the scalar field, we observe interesting phenomena such as spectral weight transfer, Fermi surface smearing, which has already been reported in various real condensed matter experiments.

Naked singularity in 4D Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet novel gravity: Echoes and (in)-stability

We study the stability of an asymptotically flat, static, spherically symmetric naked singularity spacetime in the novel four dimensional Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet (EGB) gravity. The four dimensional EGB black hole for large enough values of the coupling parameter leads to such a naked singularity. The stability and the response of the spacetime is studied against the perturbations by test scalar, electromagnetic and Dirac fields and the time evolution of these perturbations were observed numerically. Implementing a null Dirichlet boundary condition near the singularity, we observed that for l=1 modes of scalar, electromagnetic perturbation and l=0,1 modes of Dirac perturbation the time-domain profile give rise to distinct echoes. However, as the coupling constant is increased, the echoes align and the QNM structure of the 4D-EGB naked singularity-spacetime becomes prominent. For higher values of the multipole number, the spacetime becomes unstable, thereby restricting the parameter space for the coupling parameter.

Quasinormal modes and greybody factors of the novel four dimensional Gauss-Bonnet black holes in asymptotically de Sitter space time: Scalar, Electromagnetic and Dirac perturbations

We find the low lying quasinormal mode frequencies of the recently proposed novel four dimensional Gauss-Bonnet de Sitter black holes for scalar, electromagnetic and Dirac field perturbations using the third order WKB approximation as well as Padé approximation, as an improvement over WKB. We figure out the effect of the Gauss-Bonnet coupling $α$ and the cosmological constant $Λ$ on the real and imaginary parts of the QNM frequencies. We also study the greybody factors and eikonal limits in the above background for all three different types of perturbations.

A study on black hole shadows in asymptotically de Sitter spacetimes

Previous works on black hole shadows have been primarily focused on studying shadows in asymptotically flat and anti-de Sitter space times. In the present work, we find general expressions for asymptotically de Sitter black hole shadow as seen by static and comoving observers, for any spherically symmetric black hole solution, in any space time dimension in generic theories of gravity. As test cases, we use the derived general expressions to study the shadow of three different black hole solutions: the four dimensional Reissner-Nordström de Sitter black hole, the recently proposed four dimensional Gauss Bonnet de Sitter black hole and the five dimensional Gauss Bonnet de Sitter black hole.

Study of relativistic accretion flow in Kerr-Taub-NUT spacetime

We study the properties of the relativistic, steady, axisymmetric, low angular momentum, inviscid, advective, geometrically thin accretion flow in a Kerr-Taub-NUT (KTN) spacetime which is characterized by the Kerr parameter ($a_{\rm k}$) and NUT parameter ($n$). Depending on $a_{\rm k}$ and $n$ values, KTN spacetime represents either a black or a naked singularity. We solve the governing equations that describe the relativistic accretion flow in KTN spacetime and obtain all possible global transonic accretion solutions around KTN black hole in terms of the energy $({\cal E})$ and angular momentum $(λ)$ of the flow. We identify the region of the parameter space in $λ-{\cal E}$ plane that admits the flow to possess multiple critical points for KTN black hole. We examine the modification of the parameter space due to $a_{\rm k}$ and $n$ and find that the role of $a_{\rm k}$ and $n$ in determining the parameter space is opposite to each other. This clearly indicates that the NUT parameter $n$ effectively mitigates the effect of black hole rotation in deciding the accretion flow structure. Further, we calculate the maximum disc luminosity ($L_{\rm max}$) corresponding to the accretion solutions around the KTN black hole and for a given set of $a_{\rm k}$ and $n$. In addition, we also investigate all possible flow topologies around the naked singularity and find that there exists a region around the naked singularity which remains inaccessible to the flow. We study the critical point properties for naked singularities and find that the flow possesses maximum of four critical points. Finally, we obtain the parameter space for multiple critical points for naked singularity and find that parameter space is shrunk and shifted to lower $λ$ and higher ${\cal E}$ side as $a_{\rm k}$ is increased which ultimately disappears.

Effective Field Theory of Hairy Black Holes and Their flat/dS limit

Effective theory of fluctuations based on underlying symmetry plays very important role in understanding the low energy phenomena. Using this powerful technique we study the fluctuation dynamics keeping in mind the following central question: does the effective theory of black hole provide any information about the possible existence of hair? Assuming the symmetry of the hair being that of the underlying black hole space-time, we start by writing down the most general action for the background and the fluctuation in the effective field theory framework. Considering the asymptotically flat and de Sitter black hole background with a spherically symmetric hair we derived the most general equation of motion for the fluctuation. For a particular choice of theory parameters, quasinormal modes corresponding to those fluctuations appeared to have distinct features compared to that of the usual black hole quasinormal modes. The background equations from the effective theory Lagrangian, on the other hand, seemed to suggest that the underlying theory of the hair under consideration should be higher derivative in nature. Therefore as a concrete example we construct a class of higher derivative scalar field theory which gives rise to spherically symmetric hair through background cosmological constant. We also calculate the quasinormal modes whose behaviour turned out to be similar to the one discussed from the effective theory.

Probing the Holographic Fermi Arc with scalar field: Numerical and analytical study

Fermi arcs are disconnected contour of Fermi surface, which can be observed in the pseudo-gap phase of high temperature superconductors. Aiming to understand this pseudo-gap phenomena, we study a holographic Fermionic system coupled with a massive scalar field in an AdS black hole background. Depending on the boundary condition on the scalar field mode, we discuss two possible scenarios. When the scalar condenses below a critical temperature $T_c$, the Fermi surface undergoes a transition from normal phase to pseudo-gap phase. Hence $T_c$ can be the reminiscent of well-known cross over temperature $T^*$ in cuprate superconductor, below which pseudo-gap appears at constant doping. In the second scenario, the bulk scalar develops a non-normalizable profile at arbitrary temperature for non-zero source at the boundary. Therefore, we can tune the Fermi spectrum by tuning a dual source at the boundary. The dual source for this case can be the reminiscent of hole doping in the real cuprate superconductor. For both the cases we have studied Fermi spectrum and observed anisotropic gap in the spectral function depending on the model parameter and studied the properties of Fermi arcs across different phases.

A note on electromagnetic and gravitational perturbations of the Bardeen de Sitter black hole: quasinormal modes and greybody factors

Bardeen de-Sitter (BdS) black hole is a spherically symmetric solution of Einstein's equation which is coupled to nonlinear electromagnetic field in a way that one gets a regular solution, devoid of any singularity at the origin. We compute the quasinormal (QN) frequencies for BdS black hole due to electromagnetic and gravitational perturbations. We analyse the behaviour of both real and imaginary parts of BdS QN frequencies by varying the black hole parameters and compare frequencies with Reissner-Nordström de-Sitter (RN-dS) black hole. Interestingly, we find that the response of BdS and RN-dS black holes under electromagnetic and gravitational perturbations are different when the charge parameter is varied, which can be used to understand nonlinear and linear electromagnetic fields in curved spacetime separately. A study on the dynamics of perturbation as well as the scattering from the BdS black holes using WKB approach is performed. Greybody factors and their variations with black hole parameters are investigated.

Limitations of Pseudo-Newtonian approach in studying the accretion flow around Kerr black hole

We study the relativistic accretion flow around a generic stationary axisymmetric space-time and obtain an effective potential ($Φ^{\rm eff}$) that accurately mimics the general relativistic features of Kerr black hole having spin $0\le a_k <1$. Considering the accretion disc confined around the equatorial plane of a rotating black hole and using the relativistic equation of state, we examine the properties of the relativistic accretion flow and compare it with the same obtained form semi-relativistic as well as non-relativistic accretion flows. Towards this, we first investigate the transonic properties of the accretion flow around the rotating black hole where good agreement is observed for relativistic and semi-relativistic flows. Further, we study the non-linearities such as shock waves in accretion flow. Here also we find that the shock properties are in agreement for both relativistic and semi-relativistic flows irrespective of the black hole spin ($a_k$), although it deviates significantly for non-relativistic flow. In fact, when the particular shocked solutions are compared for flows with identical outer boundary conditions, the positions of shock transition in relativistic and semi-relativistic flows agree well with deviation of $6-12\%$ for $0 \le a_k \le 0.99$, but vast disagreement is observed for non-relativistic flow. In addition, we compare the parameter space for shock to establish the fact that relativistic as well as semi-relativistic accretion flow dynamics do show close agreement irrespective of $a_k$ values, whereas non-relativistic flow fails to do so. With these findings, we point out that semi-relativistic flow including $Φ^{\rm eff}$ satisfactorily mimics the relativistic accretion flows around Kerr black hole. Finally, we discuss the possible implications of this work in the context of dissipative advective accretion flow around Kerr black holes.

I-Q relation for rapidly rotating neutron stars

We consider a universal relation between moment of inertia and quadrupole moment of arbitrarily fast rotating neutron stars. Recent studies suggest that this relation breaks down for fast rotation. We find that it is still universal among various suggested equations of state for constant values of certain dimensionless parameters characterizing the magnitude of rotation. One of these parameters includes the neutron star radius, leading to a new universal relation expressing the radius through the mass, frequency, and spin parameter. This can become a powerful tool for radius measurements.
