Distance Two Links

In this paper, we characterize all links in the 3-sphere with bridge number at least three that have a bridge sphere of distance two. We show that a link L has a bridge sphere of distance at most two then it falls into at least one of three categories: (1) The exterior of L contains an essential meridional sphere. (2) L can be decomposed as a tangle product of a Montesinos tangle with an essential tangle in a way that respects the bridge surface and either the Montesinos tangle is rational or the essential tangle contains an incompressible, boundary-incompressible annulus. (3) L is obtained by banding from another link L' that has a bridge sphere of the same Euler characteristic as the bridge sphere for L but of distance 0 or 1.

Band taut sutured manifolds

Attaching a 2-handle to a genus two or greater boundary component of a 3-manifold is a natural generalization of Dehn filling a torus boundary component. We prove that there is an interesting relationship between an essential surface in a sutured 3-manifold, the number of intersections between the boundary of the surface and one of the sutures, and the cocore of the 2-handle in the manifold after attaching a 2-handle along the suture. We use this result to show that tunnels for tunnel number one knots or links in any 3-manifold can be isotoped to lie on a branched surface corresponding to a certain taut sutured manifold hierarchy of the knot or link exterior. In a subsequent paper, we use the theorem to prove that band sums satisfy the cabling conjecture, and to give new proofs that unknotting number one knots are prime and that genus is superadditive under band sum. To prove the theorem, we introduce band taut sutured manifolds and prove the existence of band taut sutured manifold hierarchies.

Exceptional surgeries on knots with exceptional classes

We survey aspects of classical combinatorial sutured manifold theory and show how they can be adapted to study exceptional Dehn fillings and 2-handle additions. As a consequence we show that if a hyperbolic knot $β$ in a compact, orientable, hyperbolic 3-manifold $M$ has the property that winding number and wrapping number are not equal with respect to a non-trivial class in $H_2(M,\boundary M)$, then, with only a few possible exceptions, every 3-manifold $M'$ obtained by Dehn surgery on $β$ with surgery distance $Δ\geq 2$ will be hyperbolic.

Genus bounds bridge number for high distance knots

If a knot K in a closed, orientable 3-manifold M has a bridge surface T with distance at least 3 in the curve complex of T - K, then the genus of any essential surface in its exterior with non-empty, non-meridional boundary gives rise to an upper bound for the bridge number of K with respect to T. In particular, a nontrivial, aspherical, and atoroidal knot K with such a bridge surface has its bridge number bounded by 5 if K has a non-trivial reducing surgery; 6 if K has a non-trivial toroidal surgery; and 4g + 2 if K is null-homologous and has Seifert genus g.

Comparing 2-handle additions to a genus 2 boundary component

We prove that knots obtained by attaching a band to a split link satisfy the cabling conjecture. We also give new proofs that unknotting number one knots are prime and that genus is superadditive under band sum. Additionally, we prove a collection of results comparing two 2-handle additions to a genus two boundary component of a compact, orientable 3-manifold. These results give a near complete solution to a conjecture of Scharlemann and provide evidence for a conjecture of Scharlemann and Wu. The proofs make use of a new theorem concerning the effects of attaching a 2-handle to a suture in the boundary of a sutured manifold.

Heegaard surfaces for certain graphs in compressionbodies

Let M be a compressionbody containing a graph T (with at least one edge) such that \boundary_+ M is parallel to the union of T and \boundary_- M. We extend methods of Hayashi and Shimokawa to classify bridge surfaces for T. The results of this paper are used in later work to show that if a bridge surface for a graph in a 3-manifold is c-weakly reducible then either a degenerate situation occurs or the exterior of the graph contains an essential meridional surface.

Boring split links

Boring is an operation which converts a knot or two-component link in a 3--manifold into another knot or two-component link. It generalizes rational tangle replacement and can be described as a type of 2--handle attachment. Sutured manifold theory is used to study the existence of essential spheres and planar surfaces in the exteriors of knots and links obtained by boring a split link. It is shown, for example, that if the boring operation is complicated enough, a split link or unknot cannot be obtained by boring a split link. Particular attention is paid to rational tangle replacement. If a knot is obtained by rational tangle replacement on a split link, and a few minor conditions are satisfied, the number of boundary components of a meridional planar surface is bounded below by a number depending on the distance of the rational tangle replacement. This result is used to give new proofs of two results of Eudave-Muñoz and Scharlemann's band sum theorem.
