Cusps and the family hyperbolic metric

The hyperbolic metric for the punctured unit disc in the Euclidean plane is singular at the origin. A renormalization of the metric at the origin is provided by the Euclidean metric. For Riemann surfaces there is a unique germ for the isometry class of a complete hyperbolic metric at a cusp. The renormalization for the punctured unit disc provides a renormalization for a hyperbolic metric at a cusp. For a holomorphic family of punctured Riemann surfaces the family of (co)tangent spaces along a puncture defines a tautological holomorphic line bundle over the base of the family. The Hermitian connection and Chern form for the renormalized metric are determined. Connections to the work of M. Mirzakhani, L. Takhtajan and P. Zograf, and intersection numbers for the moduli space of punctured Riemann surfaces studied by E. Witten are presented.

Weil-Petersson perspectives

We highlight recent progresses in the study of the Weil-Petersson (WP) geometry of finite dimensional Teichmüller spaces. For recent progress on and the understanding of infinite dimensional Teichmüller spaces the reader is directed to the recent work of Teo-Takhtajan. As part of the highlight, we also present possible directions for future investigations.

Convexity of geodesic-length functions: a reprise

New results on the convexity of geodesic-length functions on Teichmüller space are presented. A formula for the Hessian of geodesic-length is presented. New bounds for the gradient and Hessian of geodesic-length are described. A relationship of geodesic-length functions to Weil-Petersson distance is described. Applications to the behavior of Weil-Petersson geodesics are discussed.

Geometry of the Weil-Petersson completion of Teichmüller space

We present a view of the current understanding of the geometry of Weil-Petersson (WP) geodesics on the completion of the Teichmüller space. We sketch a collection of results by other authors and then proceed to develop the properties of the WP CAT(0) geometry. Our approach includes a simplified proof of the Masur-Wolf theorem, a classification of flats and of geodesic limits.
