Constructions of small symplectic 4-manifolds using Luttinger surgery

In this article we use the technique of Luttinger surgery to produce small examples of simply connected and non-simply connected minimal symplectic 4-manifolds. In particular, we construct: (1) An example of a minimal symplectic 4-manifold that is homeomorphic but not diffeomorphic to CP^2#3(-CP^2) which contains a symplectic surface of genus 2, trivial normal bundle, and simply connected complement and a disjoint nullhomologous Lagrangian torus with the fundamental group of the complement generated by one of the loops on the torus. (2) A minimal symplectic 4-manifold that is homeomorphic but not diffeomorphic to 3CP^2#5(-CP^2) which has two essential Lagrangian tori with simply connected complement. These manifolds can be used to replace E(1) in many known theorems and constructions. Examples in this article include the smallest known minimal symplectic manifolds with abelian fundamental groups including symplectic manifolds with finite and infinite cyclic fundamental group and Euler characteristic 6.

An interesting symplectic 4-manifold with small Euler characteristic

In this article we construct a minimal symplectic 4-manifold R that has small Euler characteristic (e(R)=8) and two essential Lagrangian tori with nice properties. These properties make R particularly suitable for constructing interesting examples of symplectic manifolds with small Euler characteristic. In particular, we construct an exotic symplectic CP^2# 5(-CP^2), the smallest known minimal symplectic 4-manifold with pi_1=Z, the smallest known minimal symplectic 4-manifolds with pi_1=Z/a + Z/b for all a,b in Z, and the smallest known minimal symplectic 4-manifold with pi_1=Z^3. We use the pi_1=Z example to derive a significantly better upper bound on the minimal Euler characteristic of all symplectic 4-manifolds with a prescribed fundamental group.

Symplectic 4-manifolds with arbitrary fundamental group near the Bogomolov-Miyaoka-Yau line

In this paper we construct a family of symplectic 4--manifolds with positive signature for any given fundamental group $G$ that approaches the BMY line. The family is used to show that one cannot hope to do better than than the BMY inequality in finding a lower bound for the function $f=χ+bσ$ on the class of all minimal symplectic 4-manifolds with a given fundamental group.

On symplectic 4-manifolds with prescribed fundamental group

In this article we study the problem of minimizing $aχ+bσ$ on the class of all symplectic 4--manifolds with prescribed fundamental group $G$ ($χ$ is the Euler characteristic, $σ$ is the signature, and $a,b\in \BR$), focusing on the important cases $χ$, $χ+σ$ and $2χ+3σ$. In certain situations we can derive lower bounds for these functions and describe symplectic 4-manifolds which are minimizers. We derive an upper bound for the minimum of $χ$ and $χ+σ$ in terms of the presentation of $G$.

Geography of symplectic 4-manifolds with Kodaira dimension one

The geography problem is usually stated for simply connected symplectic 4-manifolds. When the first cohomology is nontrivial, however, one can restate the problem taking into account how close the symplectic manifold is to satisfying the conclusion of the Hard Lefschetz Theorem, which is measured by a nonnegative integer called the degeneracy. In this paper we include the degeneracy as an extra parameter in the geography problem and show how to fill out the geography of symplectic 4-manifolds with Kodaira dimension 1 for all admissible triples.

New symplectic 4--manifolds with $b_+{=}1$

Symplectic 4-manifolds $(X,ω)$ with $b_+{=}1$ are roughly classified by the canonical class $K$ and the symplectic form $ω$ depending upon the sign of $K^2$ and $K\cdot ω$. Examples are known for each category except for the case when the manifold satisfies $K^2=0$, $K\cdot ω>0$, $b_1=2$, and fails to be of Lefschetz type. The purpose of this paper is to construct an infinite number of examples of such manifolds. Furthermore, we will show that these manifolds have very special properties -- they are not complex manifolds, their Seiberg-Witten invariants are independent of the chamber structure, and they do not have metrics of positive scalar curvature.

Seiberg-Witten vanishing theorem for $S^1$-manifolds with fixed points

In this paper we show that the Seiberg--Witten invariant is zero for all smooth 4--manifolds with $b_+{>}1$ which admit circle actions that have at least one fixed point. Furthermore, we show that all symplectic 4--manifolds which admit circle actions with fixed points are rational or ruled, and thus admit a symplectic circle action.

Seiberg-Witten invariants, orbifolds, and circle actions

The main result of this paper is a formula for calculating the Seiberg-Witten invariants of 4-manifolds with fixed-point free circle actions. This is done by showing under suitable conditions the existence of a diffeomorphism between the moduli space of the 4-manifold and the moduli space of the quotient 3-orbifold. Two corollaries include b_+>1 4-manifolds with fixed-point free circle actions are simple type and a new proof that the four dimensional invariants of $Y \times S^1$ are equal to the the three dimensional invariants of $Y$. An infinite number of b_+=1 4-manifolds where the Seiberg-Witten invariants are still diffeomorphism invariants are constructed and studied.

Seiberg-Witten invariants of 4-manifolds with free circle actions

The main results of this paper describes a formula for the Seiberg-Witten invariant of a 4-manifold which admits a nontrivial free S^1-action. We use this theorem to produce a nonsymplectic 4-manifold with a free circle action whose orbit space fibers over S^1. We also describe a 3-manifold which is not the orbit space of any symplectic 4-manifold with a free circle action. A corollary of the main theorem is a formula for the 3-dimensional Seiberg-Witten invariants of the total space of a circle bundle over a surface.
