BICEP/Keck XXI: Constraints on Early-Universe Parity Violation from Multipole-Dependent Birefringence

We present the first constraints on multipole-dependent cosmic birefringence using CMB polarization data from the BK18 dataset, which combines observations from BICEP2, Keck Array, and BICEP3 at frequencies of 95, 150, and 220 GHz. Photon coupling to an axion-like field leads to the rotation of CMB polarization, inducing non-zero EB cross-correlations. We show that a multipole-dependent rotation beta(l) imprints a distinct signature in the polarization spectra that can be constrained. Specifically, we consider an Early Dark Energy (EDE) scenario in which a pseudoscalar field couples to photons through a Chern-Simons interaction, generating a polarization rotation with multipole dependence. We introduce a phenomenological beta(l) as a step function, obtaining constraints on the step function size consistent with zero, with uncertainties less than 0.15 degrees (68% CL). In addition, using multi-frequency EE, BB, and EB cross-spectra, along with robust BICEP/Keck foreground treatment and likelihood framework, we derive constraints on the axion-photon coupling amplitude g for several choices of EDE parameters. For the baseline best-fit value f_{EDE} = 0.087 from the Planck 2018 analysis, we obtain g = 0.11 +/- 0.37 (68% CL), consistent with previous limits.

Tuning the magnetism and band topology through antisite defects in Sb doped MnBi4Te7

The fine control of magnetism and electronic structure is crucial since the interplay between magnetism and band topology can lead to various novel magnetic topological states including axion insulators, magnetic Weyl semimetals and Chern insulators etc. Through crystal growth, transport, thermodynamic, neutron diffraction measurements, we show that with Sb-doping, the newly-discovered intrinsic antiferromagnetic topological insulator MnBi4Te7 evolves from antiferro-magnetic to ferromagnetic and then ferrimagnetic. We attribute this to the formation of Mn(Bi,Sb) antisites upon doping, which result in additional Mn sublattices that modify the delicate interlayer magnetic interactions and cause the dominant Mn sublattice to go from antiferromagnetic to ferro-magnetic. We further investigate the effect of antisites on the band topology using the first-principles calculations. Without considering antisites, the series evolves from antiferromagnetic topological insulator (x = 0) to ferromagnetic axion insulators. In the exaggerated case of 16.7% of periodic antisites, the band topology is modified and type-I magnetic Weyl semimetal phase can be realized at intermediate dopings. Therefore, this doping series provides a fruitful platform with continuously tunable magnetism and topology for investigating emergent phenomena, including quantum anomalous Hall effect, Fermi arc states, etc.

Strongly Gapped Topological Surface States on Protected Surfaces of Antiferromagnetic MnBi$_4$Te$_7$ and MnBi$_6$Te$_{10}$

The search for materials to support the Quantum Anomalous Hall Effect (QAHE) have recently centered on intrinsic magnetic topological insulators (MTIs) including MnBi$_2$Te$_4$ or heterostructures made up of MnBi$_2$Te$_4$ and Bi$_2$Te$_3$. While MnBi$_2$Te$_4$ is itself a MTI, most recent ARPES experiments indicate that the surface states on this material lack the mass gap that is expected from the magnetism-induced time-reversal symmetry breaking (TRSB), with the absence of this mass gap likely due to surface magnetic disorder. Here, utilizing small-spot ARPES scanned across the surfaces of MnBi$_4$Te$_7$ and MnBi$_6$Te$_{10}$, we show the presence of large mass gaps (~ 100 meV scale) on both of these materials when the MnBi$_2$Te$_4$ surfaces are buried below one layer of Bi$_2$Te$_3$ that apparently protects the magnetic order, but not when the MnBi$_2$Te$_4$ surfaces are exposed at the surface or are buried below two Bi$_2$Te$_3$ layers. This makes both MnBi$_4$Te$_7$ and MnBi$_6$Te$_{10}$ excellent candidates for supporting the QAHE, especially if bulk devices can be fabricated with a single continuous Bi$_2$Te$_3$ layer at the surface.

Nonlinear functional mapping of the human brain

The field of neuroimaging has truly become data rich, and novel analytical methods capable of gleaning meaningful information from large stores of imaging data are in high demand. Those methods that might also be applicable on the level of individual subjects, and thus potentially useful clinically, are of special interest. In the present study, we introduce just such a method, called nonlinear functional mapping (NFM), and demonstrate its application in the analysis of resting state fMRI from a 242-subject subset of the IMAGEN project, a European study of adolescents that includes longitudinal phenotypic, behavioral, genetic, and neuroimaging data. NFM employs a computational technique inspired by biological evolution to discover and mathematically characterize interactions among ROI (regions of interest), without making linear or univariate assumptions. We show that statistics of the resulting interaction relationships comport with recent independent work, constituting a preliminary cross-validation. Furthermore, nonlinear terms are ubiquitous in the models generated by NFM, suggesting that some of the interactions characterized here are not discoverable by standard linear methods of analysis. We discuss one such nonlinear interaction in the context of a direct comparison with a procedure involving pairwise correlation, designed to be an analogous linear version of functional mapping. We find another such interaction that suggests a novel distinction in brain function between drinking and non-drinking adolescents: a tighter coupling of ROI associated with emotion, reward, and interoceptive processes such as thirst, among drinkers. Finally, we outline many improvements and extensions of the methodology to reduce computational expense, complement other analytical tools like graph-theoretic analysis, and allow for voxel level NFM to eliminate the necessity of ROI selection.
