Massey products for homotopy inner products

This paper defines Massey-type products for a homotopy inner product on an $A_\infty$ algebra, called Massey inner products. We include an explicit description of ordinary Massey products for $A_\infty$ algebras, and for $A_\infty$ modules, and show that Massey product sets can have interesting internal structure. We give non-trivial applications from lens spaces, links, and low dimensional manifolds, showing Massey inner products contain information beyond ordinary Massey products.

Conformally symplectic structures and the Lefschetz condition

This short note provides a symplectic analogue of Vaisman's theorem in complex geometry. Namely, for any compact symplectic manifold satisfying the hard Lefschetz condition in degree 1, every locally conformally symplectic structure is in fact globally conformally symplectic, whenever there is a mutually compatible almost complex structure.

Homotopy BV-algebras in Hermitian geometry

We show that the de Rham complex of any almost Hermitian manifold carries a natural commutative $BV_\infty$-algebra structure satisfying the degeneration property. In the almost Kähler case, this recovers Koszul's BV-algebra, defined for any Poisson manifold. As a consequence, both the Dolbeault and the de Rham cohomologies of any compact Hermitian manifold are canonically endowed with homotopy hypercommutative algebra structures, also known as formal homotopy Frobenius manifolds. Similar results are developed for (almost) symplectic manifolds with Lagrangian subbundles.

Hodge-de Rham numbers of almost complex 4-manifolds

We introduce and study Hodge-de Rham numbers for compact almost complex 4-manifolds, generalizing the Hodge numbers of a complex surface. The main properties of these numbers in the case of complex surfaces are extended to this more general setting, and it is shown that all Hodge-de Rham numbers for compact almost complex 4-manifolds are determined by the cohomology, except for one (the irregularity). Finally, these numbers are shown to prohibit the existence of complex structures on certain manifolds, without reference to the classification of surfaces.

A ddc-type condition beyond the Kähler realm

This paper introduces a generalization of the ddc-condition for complex manifolds. Like the dd^c-condition, it admits a diverse collection of characterizations, and is hereditary under various geometric constructions. Most notably, it is an open property with respect to small deformations. The condition is satisfied by a wide range of complex manifolds including all compact complex surfaces, and all compact Vaisman manifolds. We show there are computable invariants of a real homotopy type which in many cases prohibit it from containing any complex manifold satisfying such ddc-type conditions in low degrees. This gives rise to numerous examples of almost complex manifolds which cannot be homotopy equivalent to any of these complex manifolds.

Geometric Structures on the Cochains of a Manifold

In this paper we develop several algebraic structures on the simplicial cochains of a triangulated manifold that are analogues of objects in differential geometry. We study a cochain product and prove several statements about its convergence to the wedge product on differential forms. Also, for cochains with an inner product, we define a combinatorial Hodge star operator, and describe some applications, including a combinatorial period matrix for surfaces. We show that for a particularly nice cochain inner product, these combinatorial structures converge to their continuum analogues as the mesh of a triangulation tends to zero.

Almost complex manifolds with small Nijenhuis tensor

We give several explicit examples of compact manifolds with a $1$-parameter family of almost complex structures having arbitrarily small Nijenhuis tensor in the $C^0$-norm. The $4$-dimensional examples possess no complex structure, whereas the $6$-dimensional example does not possesses a left invariant complex structure, and whether it possesses a complex structure appears to be unknown.

Dolbeault cohomology for almost complex manifolds

This paper extends Dolbeault cohomology and its surrounding theory to arbitrary almost complex manifolds. We define a spectral sequence converging to ordinary cohomology, whose first page is the Dolbeault cohomology, and develop a harmonic theory which injects into Dolbeault cohomology. Lie-theoretic analogues of the theory are developed which yield important calculational tools for Lie groups and nilmanifolds. Finally, we study applications to maximally non-integrable manifolds, including nearly Kähler $6$-manifolds, and show Dolbeault cohomology can be used to prohibit the existence of nearly Kähler metrics.

Almost Hermitian Identities

We study the local commutation relation between the Lefschetz operator and the exterior differential on an almost complex manifold with a compatible metric. The identity that we obtain generalizes the backbone of the local Kähler identities to the setting of almost Hermitian manifolds, allowing for new global results for such manifolds.

Topological and geometric aspects of almost Kähler manifolds via harmonic theory

The well-known Kähler identities naturally extend to the non-integrable setting. This paper deduces several geometric and topological consequences of these extended identities for compact almost Kähler manifolds. Among these are identities of various Laplacians, generalized Hodge and Serre dualities, a generalized hard Lefschetz duality, and a Lefschetz decomposition, all on the space of $d$-harmonic forms of pure bidegree. There is also a generalization of Hodge Index Theorem for compact almost Kähler $4$-manifolds. In particular, these provide topological bounds on the dimension of the space of $d$-harmonic forms of pure bidegree, as well as several new obstructions to the existence of a symplectic form compatible with a given almost complex structure.

Harmonic symmetries for Hermitian manifolds

Complex manifolds with compatible metric have a naturally defined subspace of harmonic differential forms that satisfy Serre, Hodge, and conjugation duality, as well as hard Lefschetz duality. This last property follows from a representation of $sl(2,\mathbb{C})$, generalizing the well known structure on the harmonic forms of compact Kähler manifolds. Some topological implications are deduced.

Results Concerning Almost Complex Structures on the Six-Sphere

For the standard metric on the six-dimensional sphere, with Levi-Civita connection $\nabla$, we show there is no almost complex structure $J$ such that $\nabla_X J$ and $\nabla_{JX} J$ commute for every $X$, nor is there any integrable $J$ such that $\nabla_{JX} J = J \nabla_X J$ for every $X$. The latter statement generalizes a previously known result on the non-existence of integrable orthogonal almost complex structures on the six-sphere. Both statements have refined versions, expressed as intrinsic first order differential inequalities depending only on $J$ and the metric. The new techniques employed include an almost-complex analogue of the Gauss map, defined for any almost complex manifold in Euclidean space.

Center of mass and Kähler structures

There is a sequence of positive numbers $δ_{2n}$, such that for any connected $2n$-dimensional Riemannian manifold $M$, there are two mutually exclusive possibilities: $1)$ There is a complex structure on $M$ making it into a Kähler manifold, or $2)$ For any almost complex structure $J$ compatible with the metric, at every point $p\in M$, there is a smooth loop $γ$ at $p$ such that $dist(J_p, hol_γ^{-1}J_phol_γ)> δ_{2n}$.

Differential K-theory as equivalence classes of maps to Grassmannians and unitary groups

We construct a model of differential K-theory, using the geometrically defined Chern forms, whose cocycles are certain equivalence classes of maps into the Grassmannians and unitary groups. In particular, we produce the circle-integration maps for these models using classical homotopy-theoretic constructions, by incorporating certain differential forms which reconcile the incompatibility between these even and odd Chern forms. By the uniqueness theorem of Bunke and Schick, this model agrees with the spectrum-based models in the literature whose abstract Chern cocycles are compatible with the delooping maps on the nose.

Loop Differential K-theory

In this paper we introduce an equivariant extension of the Chern-Simons form, associated to a path of connections on a bundle over a manifold M, to the free loop space LM, and show it determines an equivalence relation on the set of connections on a bundle. We use this to define a ring, loop differential K-theory of M, in much the same way that differential K-theory can be defined using the Chern-Simons form [SS]. We show loop differential K-theory yields a refinement of differential K-theory, and in particular incorporates holonomy information into its classes. Additionally, loop differential K-theory is shown to be strictly coarser than the Grothendieck group of bundles with connection up to gauge equivalence. Finally, we calculate loop differential K-theory of the circle.

Pseudodeterminants and perfect square spanning tree counts

The pseudodeterminant $\textrm{pdet}(M)$ of a square matrix is the last nonzero coefficient in its characteristic polynomial; for a nonsingular matrix, this is just the determinant. If $\partial$ is a symmetric or skew-symmetric matrix then $\textrm{pdet}(\partial\partial^t)=\textrm{pdet}(\partial)^2$. Whenever $\partial$ is the $k^{th}$ boundary map of a self-dual CW-complex $X$, this linear-algebraic identity implies that the torsion-weighted generating function for cellular $k$-trees in $X$ is a perfect square. In the case that $X$ is an \emph{antipodally} self-dual CW-sphere of odd dimension, the pseudodeterminant of its $k$th cellular boundary map can be interpreted directly as a torsion-weighted generating function both for $k$-trees and for $(k-1)$-trees, complementing the analogous result for even-dimensional spheres given by the second author. The argument relies on the topological fact that any self-dual even-dimensional CW-ball can be oriented so that its middle boundary map is skew-symmetric.

Free frobenius algebra on the differential forms of a manifold

We construct an action of a free resolution of the Frobenius properad on the differential forms of a closed oriented manifold. As a consequence, the forms of a manifold with values in a semi-simple Lie algebra have an additional structure given by an action of a free resolution of the properad describing Lie di-algebras with module compatibility.

A loop group extension of the odd Chern character

We show that the universal odd Chern form, defined on the stable unitary group $U$, extends to the loop group $LU$ in a way that is closed with respect to an equivariant-type differential. This provides an odd analogue to the Bismut-Chern form. We also describe the associated transgression form, the so-called Bismut-Chern-Simons form, and explicate some properties it inherits as a differential form on the space of maps of a cylinder into the stable unitary group. As a corollary, we obtain the Chern character homomorphism from odd K-theory to the periodic cohomology of the free loop space, represented geometrically on the level of differential forms.
