Finding the remnants of lost jets at RHIC

A fast jet propagating through partonic matter loses energy by medium-induced gluon radiation. We propose a method to detect the energy loss of jets and the final-state interaction of the radiated gluons and the jets with the partonic medium. By embedding jets and radiated energy into a parton cascade, we find that the fate of lost jets can be studied by analyzing the momentum distribution of soft hadrons relative to the jet axis.

Correlations and Fluctuations, A Summary of Quark Matter 2002

Results for correlations and fluctuations presented at Quark Matter 2002 are summarized. These results include Hanbury-Brown Twiss interferometry of a wide variety of species, large scale fluctuations and correlations in $p_t$ and multiplicity, and charge fluctuations and charge balance functions.

The Quark-Gluon Plasma in a Finite Volume

The statistical mechanics of quarks and gluons are investigated within the context of the canonical ensemble. Recursive techniques are developed which enforce the exact conservation of baryon number, total isospin, electric charge, strangeness, and color. Bose and Fermi-Dirac statistics are also accounted for to all orders. The energy, entropy and particle number densities are shown to be significantly reduced for volumes less than 5 cubic fm.

Removing Distortions from Charge Balance Functions

Charge balance functions provide insight into critical issues concerning hadronization and transport in heavy-ion collisions by statistically isolating charge/anti-charge pairs which are correlated by charge conservation. However, distortions from residual interactions and unbalanced charges cloud the observable. Within the context of simple models, the significance of these effects is studied by constructing balance functions in both relative rapidity and invariant relative momentum. Methods are presented for eliminating or accounting for these distortions.

Isospin Fluctuations from a Thermally Equilibrated Hadron Gas

Partition functions, multiplicity distributions, and isospin fluctuations are calculated for canonical ensembles in which additive quantum numbers as well as total isospin are strictly conserved. When properly accounting for Bose-Einstein symmetrization, the multiplicity distributions of neutral pions in a pion gas are significantly broader as compared to the non-degenerate case. Inclusion of resonances compensates for this broadening effect. Recursion relations are derived which allow calculation of exact results with modest computer time.

Balance Functions, Correlations, Charge Fluctuations and Interferometry

Connections between charge balance functions, charge fluctuations and correlations are presented. It is shown that charge fluctuations can be directly expressed in terms of a balance functions under certain assumptions. The distortion of charge balance functions due to experimental acceptance is discussed and the effects of identical boson interference is illustrated with a simple model.

The effect of finite-range interactions in classical transport theory

The effect of scattering with non-zero impact parameters between consituents in relativistic heavy ion collisions is investigated. In solving the relativistic Boltzmann equation, the characteristic range of the collision kernel is varied from approximately one fm to zero while leaving the mean-free path unchanged. Modifying this range is shown to significantly affect spectra and flow observables. The finite range is shown to provide effective viscosities, shear, bulk viscosity and heat conductivity, with the viscous coefficients being proportional to the square of the interaction range.

Quantum corrections for pion correlations involving resonance decays

A method is presented to include quantum corrections into the calculation of two-pion correlations for the case where particles originate from resonance decays. The technique uses classical information regarding the space-time points at which resonances are created. By evaluating a simple thermal model, the method is compared to semiclassical techniques that assume exponential decaying resonances moving along classical trajectories. Significant improvements are noted when the resonance widths are broad as compared to the temperature.

Rare isotope production in statistical multifragmentation

Producing rare isotopes through statistical multifragmentation is investigated using the Mekjian method for exact solutions of the canonical ensemble. Both the initial fragmentation and the the sequential decay are modeled in such a way as to avoid Monte Carlo and thus provide yields for arbitrarily scarce fragments. The importance of sequential decay, exact particle-number conservation and the sensitivities to parameters such as density and temperature are explored. Recent measurements of isotope ratios from the fragmentation of different Sn isotopes are interpreted within this picture.

Clocking hadronization in relativistic heavy ion collisions with balance functions

A novel state of matter has been hypothesized to exist during the early stage of relativistic heavy ion collisions, with normal hadrons not appearing until several fm/c after the start of the reaction. To test this hypothesis, correlations between charges and their associated anticharges are evaluated with the use of balance functions. It is shown that late-stage hadronization is characterized by tightly correlated charge/anticharge pairs when measured as a function of relative rapidity.

Canonical and Microcanonical Distributions for Fermi Systems

Recursion relations are presented that allow exact calculation of canonical and microcanonical partition functions of degenerate Fermi systems, assuming no explicit two-body interactions. Calculations of the level density, sorted by angular momentum, are presented for Ni-56 are presented. The issue of treating unbound states is also addressed.

Lambda-proton correlations in relativistic heavy ion collisions

The prospect of using lambda-proton correlations to extract source sizes in relativistic heavy ion collisions is investigated. It is found that the strong interaction induces a large peak in the correlation function that provides more sensitive source size measurements than two-proton correlations under some circumstances. The prospect of using lambda-proton correlations to measure the time lag between lambda and proton emissions is also studied.

Multiple pion production from an oriented chiral condensate

We consider an ``oriented'' chiral condensate produced in the squeezed states of the effective field theory with time- and space-dependent pion mass parameter. We discuss the general properties of the solution, identifying condensate modes and determining the resulting pion distributions. The implementation of the dynamics in the form of sudden perturbation allows us to look for exact solutions. In the region of condensation, the dramatic increase in pion production and charge fluctuations are demonstrated.

Statistical Models of Nuclear Fragmentation

A method is presented that allows exact calculations of fragment multiplicity distributions for a canonical ensemble of non-interacting clusters. Fragmentation properties are shown to depend on only a few parameters. Fragments are shown to be copiously produced above the transition temperature. At this transition temperature, the calculated multiplicity distributions broaden and become strongly super-Poissonian. This behavior is compared to predictions from a percolation model. A corresponding microcanonical formalism is also presented.

Phase space density and chiral symmetry restoration in relativistic heavy ion collisions

The effect of altered hadron masses is studied for its effect with regard to final-state hadronic observables. It is shown that the final phase space densities of pions and kaons, which can be inferred experimentally, are sensitive to in-medium properties of the excited matter at earlier stages of the collision, but that the sensitivity is significantly moderated by interactions that change the effective numbers of pions and kaons during the latter part of the collision.

Fragment Multiplicity Distributions, a Signal of True Nuclear Multifragmentation

Multiplicity fluctuations of intermediate-mass fragments are studied with the percolation model. It is shown that super-Poissonian fluctuations occur near the percolation transition and that this behavior is associated with the fragmentative nature of the percolation model. The consequences of various choices in defining and binning fragments are also evaluated. Several suggestions for experiments in nuclear fragmentation are presented.
