Stability of Gorenstein Categories

We show that an iteration of the procedure used to define the Gorenstein projective modules over a commutative ring $R$ yields exactly the Gorenstein projective modules. Specifically, given an exact sequence of Gorenstein projective $R$-modules $G=...\xra{\partial^G_2}G_1\xra{\partial^G_1}G_0\xra{\partial^G_0} ...$ such that the complexes $\Hom_R(G,H)$ and $\Hom_R(H,G)$ are exact for each Gorenstein projective $R$-module $H$, the module $\coker(\partial^G_1)$ is Gorenstein projective. The proof of this result hinges upon our analysis of Gorenstein subcategories of abelian categories.

Detecting completeness from ext-vanishing

Motivated by work of C. U. Jensen, R.-O. Buchweitz, and H. Flenner, we prove the following result. Let $R$ be a commutative Noetherian ring and $a$ an ideal in the Jacobson radical of $R$. Let $\hat{R}^a$ be the $a$-adic completion of $R$. If $M$ is a finitely generated $R$-module such that $\ext^i_R(\hat{R}^a,M)=0$ for all $i\neq 0$, then $M$ is $a$-adically complete.

Semidualizing modules and the divisor class group

Among the finitely generated modules over a Noetherian ring R, the semidualizing modules have been singled out due to their particularly nice duality properties. When R is a normal domain, we exhibit a natural inclusion of the set of isomorphism classes of semidualizing R-modules into the divisor class group of R. After a description of the basic properties of this inclusion, it is employed to investigate the structure of the set of isomorphism classes of semidualizing R-modules. In particular, this set is described completely for determinantal rings over normal domains.

The set of semidualizing complexes is a nontrivial metric space

We show that the set $\s(R)$ of shift-isomorphism classes of semidualizing complexes over a local ring $R$ admits a nontrivial metric. We investigate the interplay between the metric and several algebraic operations. Motivated by the dagger duality isometry, we prove the following: If $K,L$ are homologically bounded below and degreewise finite $R$-complexes such that $K\lotimes_R K\lotimes_R L$ is semidualizing, then $K$ is shift-isomorphic to $R$. In investigating the existence of nontrivial open balls in $\s(R)$, we prove that $\s(R)$ contains elements that are not comparable in the reflexivity ordering if and only if it contains at least three distinct elements.

Reflexivity and ring homomorphisms of finite flat dimension

In this paper we present a systematic study of the reflexivity properties of homologically finite complexes with respect to semidualizing complexes in the setting of nonlocal rings. One primary focus is the descent of these properties over ring homomorphisms of finite flat dimension, presented in terms of inequalities between generalized G-dimensions. Most of these results are new even when the ring homomorphism is local. The main tool for these analyses is a nonlocal version of the amplitude inequality of Iversen, Foxby, and Iyengar. We provide numerous examples demonstrating the need for certain hypotheses and the strictness of many inequalities.

Characterizing local rings via homological dimensions and regular sequences

Let (R,m) be a Noetherian local ring of depth d and C a semidualizing R-complex. Let M be a finite R-module and t an integer between 0 and d. If G_C-dimension of M/IM is finite for all ideals I generated by an R-regular sequence of length at most d-t then either G_C-dimension of M is at most t or C is a dualizing complex. Analogous results for other homological dimensions are also given.

G-dimension over local homomorphisms. Applications to the Frobenius endomorphism

We develop a theory of G-dimension for modules over local homomorphisms which encompasses the classical theory of G-dimension for finite modules over local rings. As an application, we prove that a local ring R of characteristic p is Gorenstein if and only if it possesses a nonzero finite module of finite projective dimension that has finite G-dimension when considered as an R-module via some power of the Frobenius endomorphism of R. We also prove results that track the behavior of Gorenstein properties of local homomorphisms under (de)composition.

Complete intersection dimension for complexes

We extend the notions of complete intersection dimension and lower complete intersection dimension to the category of complexes with finite homology and verify basic properties analogous to those holding for modules. We also discuss the question of the behavior of complete intersection dimension with respect to short exact sequences.

On symbolic powers of prime ideals

Let (R,m) be a regular local ring with prime ideals p and q such that p+q is m-primary and dim(R/p)+dim(R/q)=dim(R). It has been conjectured by Kurano and Roberts that p^{(n)} \cap q \subseteq m^{n+1} for all positive integers n. We discuss this conjecture and related conjectures. In particular, we prove that this conjecture holds for all regular local rings if and only if it holds for all localizations of polynomial algebras over complete discrete valuation rings. In addition, we give examples showing that certain generalizations to nonregular rings do not hold.

Multiplicities and a dimension inequality for unmixed modules

We prove the following result, which is motivated by the recent work of Kurano and Roberts on Serre's positivity conjecture. Assume that (R,m) is a local ring with finitely-generated module M such that R/ann(M) is quasi-unmixed and contains a field, and that p and q are prime ideals in the support of M such that p is analytically unramified, p+q is m-primary and e(M_p)=e(M). Then dim(R/p)+dim(R/q)\leq dim(M). We also prove a similar theorem in a special case of mixed characteristic. Finally, we provide several examples to explain our assumptions as well as an example of a noncatenary, local domain R with prime ideal p such that e(R_p)>e(R)=1.

Intersections of symbolic powers of prime ideals

Let (R,m) be a local ring with prime ideals p and q such that p+q is an m-primary ideal. If R is regular and contains a field, and dim(R/p)+dim(R/q)=dim(R), we prove that p^{(r)}\cap q^{(n)}\subseteq m^{m+n} for all positive integers r and s. This is proved using a generalization of Serre's Intersection Theorem which we apply to a hypersurface R/fR. The generalization gives conditions that guarantee that Serre's bound on the intersection dimension dim(R/p)+dim(R/q) \leq dim(R) holds when R is nonregular.
