A Generalized Theory of Varying Alpha

In this paper, we formulate a generalization of the simple Bekenstein-Sandvik-Barrow-Magueijo (BSBM) theory of varying alpha by allowing the coupling constant, ω, for the corresponding scalar field ψ to depend on ψ. We focus on the situation where ω is exponential in ψ and find the late-time behaviours that occur in matter-dominated and dark-energy dominated cosmologies. We also consider the situation when the background expansion scale factor of the universe evolves in proportion to an arbitrary power of the cosmic time. We find the conditions under which the fine structure `constant' increases with time, as in the BSBM theory, and establish a cosmic no-hair behaviour for accelerating universes. We also find the conditions under which the fine structure `constant' can decrease with time and compare the whole family of models with astronomical data from quasar absorption spectra.

A Fast Algorithm for the Discrete Core/Periphery Bipartitioning Problem

Various methods have been proposed in the literature to determine an optimal partitioning of the set of actors in a network into core and periphery subsets. However, these methods either work only for relatively small input sizes, or do not guarantee an optimal answer. In this paper, we propose a new algorithm to solve this problem. This algorithm is efficient and exact, allowing the optimal partitioning for networks of several thousand actors to be computed in under a second. We also show that the optimal core can be characterized as a set containing the actors with the highest degrees in the original network.

Interacting Cosmological Fluids and the Coincidence Problem

We examine the evolution of a universe comprising two interacting fluids, which interact via a term proportional to the product of their densities. In the case of two matter fluids it is shown that the ratio of the densities tends to a constant after an initial cooling-off period. We then obtain a complete solution for the cosmological constant (w = -1) scenario. Finally, we investigate the general case in which the dark energy equation of state is p = w*rho, where w is a constant, and show that periodic solutions can occur if w < -1. We further demonstrate that the ratio of the dark matter to dark energy densities is confined to a bounded interval, and that this ratio can be O(1) at infinitely many times in the history of the universe, thus solving the coincidence problem.

Classical Stability of Sudden and Big Rip Singularities

We introduce a general characterization of sudden cosmological singularities and investigate the classical stability of homogeneous and isotropic cosmological solutions of all curvatures containing these singularities to small scalar, vector, and tensor perturbations using gauge invariant perturbation theory. We establish that sudden singularities at which the scale factor, expansion rate, and density are finite are stable except for a set of special parameter values. We also apply our analysis to the stability of Big Rip singularities and find the conditions for their stability against small scalar, vector, and tensor perturbations.
