Robust heterodimensional cycles of co-index two via split blending machines

We consider diffeomorphisms $f$ with heterodimensional cycles of co-index two, associated with saddles $P$ and $Q$ having unstable indices $\ell$ and $\ell+2$, respectively. In a partially hyperbolic setting, where a two-dimensional center direction and strong invariant manifolds are defined, we introduce the class of \emph{non-escaping cycles}, where the strong stable manifold of $P$ and the strong unstable manifold of $Q$ are involved in the cycle. This configuration guarantees the existence of orbits that remain in a neighbourhood of the cycle. We show that such diffeomorphisms $f$ can be $C^1$ approximated by diffeomorphisms exhibiting simultaneously $C^1$ robust heterodimensional cycles of co-indices one and two, encompassing all possible combinations among hyperbolic sets of unstable indices $\ell$, $\ell+1$, and $\ell+2$. The proof relies on the construction of \emph{split blending machines}. This tool extends Asaoka's blending machines to a partially hyperbolic setting, providing a mechanisms to generate and control robust intersections within a two-dimensional central bundle. We also present simple dynamical settings where such cycles occur, namely skew product dynamics with surface fiber maps. Non-escaping cycles also appear in contexts such as Derived from Anosov diffeomorphisms and matrix cocycles on $\mathrm{GL}(3,\mathbb{R})$.

Homoclinic tangencies leading to robust heterodimensional cycles

We consider $C^r$ ($r\geqslant 1$) diffeomorphisms $f$ defined on manifolds of dimension $\geqslant 3$ with homoclinic tangencies associated to saddles. Under generic properties, we show that if the saddle is homoclinically related to a blender then the diffeomorphism $f$ can be {$C^r$} approximated by diffeomorphisms with {$C^1$} robust heterodimensional cycles. As an application, we show that the classic Simon-Asaoka's examples of diffeomorphisms with $C^1$ robust homoclinic tangencies also display {$C^1$} robust heterodimensional cycles. In a second application, we consider homoclinic tangencies associated to hyperbolic sets. When the entropy of these sets is large enough we obtain $C^1$ robust cycles after $C^1$ perturbations.

Nontransverse heterodimensional cycles: stabilisation and robust tangencies

We consider three-dimensional diffeomorphisms having simultaneously heterodimensional cycles and heterodimensional tangencies associated to saddle-foci. These cycles lead to a completely nondominated bifurcation setting. For every $r\geqslant 2$, we exhibit a class of such diffeomorphisms whose heterodimensional cycles can be $C^r$ stabilised and (simultaneously) approximated by diffeomorphisms with $C^r$ robust homoclinic tangencies. The complexity of our nondominated setting with plenty of homoclinic and heteroclinic intersections is used to overcome the difficulty of performing $C^r$ perturbations, $r\geqslant 2$, which are remarkably more difficult than $C^1$ ones. Our proof is reminiscent of the Palis-Takens' approach to get surface diffeomorphisms with infinitely many sinks (Newhouse phenomenon) in the unfolding of homoclinic tangencies of surface diffeomorphisms. This proof involves a scheme of renormalisation along nontransverse heteroclinic orbits converging to a center-unstable Hénon-like family displaying blender-horseshoes. A crucial step is the analysis of the embeddings of these blender-horseshoes in a nondominated context.

Periodic points and measures for a class of skew products

We consider the open set constructed by M. Shub in [42] of partially hyperbolic skew products on the space $\mathbb{T}^2\times \mathbb{T}^2$ whose non-wandering set is not stable. We show that there exists an open set $\mathcal{U}$ of such diffeomorphisms such that if $F_S\in \mathcal{U}$ then its measure of maximal entropy is unique, hyperbolic and, generically, describes the distribution of periodic points. Moreover, the non-wandering set of such an $F_S\in \mathcal{U}$ contains closed invariant subsets carrying entropy arbitrarily close to the topological entropy of $F_S$ and within which the dynamics is conjugate to a subshift of finite type. Under an additional assumption on the base dynamics, we verify that $F_S$ preserves a unique SRB measure, which is physical, whose basin has full Lebesgue measure and coincides with the measure of maximal entropy. We also prove that there exists a residual subset $\mathcal{R}$ of $\mathcal{U}$ such that if $F_S\in \mathcal{R}$ then the topological and periodic entropies of $F_S$ are equal, $F_S$ is asymptotic per-expansive, has a sub-exponential growth rate of the periodic orbits and admits a principal strongly faithful symbolic extension with embedding.

A formula for the local metric pressure

In this note we present a formula for the local metric pressure that generalizes Brin-Katok result for the metric entropy. As an application, we give a straightforward proof of the fact that non-atomic weak-Gibbs invariant probability measures are equilibrium states.

Equilibrium states for a class of skew-products

We consider skew-products on $M\times \mathbb{T}^2$, where $M$ is the two-sphere or the two-torus, which are partially hyperbolic and semi-conjugate to an Axiom A diffeomorphism. This class of dynamics includes the open sets of $Ω$-non-stable systems introduced by Abraham, Smale and Shub. We present sufficient conditions, both on the skew-products and the potentials, for the existence and uniqueness of equilibrium states, and discuss their statistical stability.

Hénon-like families and blender-horseshoes at non-transverse heterodimensional cycles

In dimension three and under certain regularity assumptions, we construct a renormalisation scheme at the heterodimensional tangency of a non-transverse heterodimensional cycle associated with a pair of saddle-foci whose limit dynamic is a center-unstable Hénon-like family displaying blender-horseshoes. As a consequence, the initial cycle can be approximated in higher regularity topologies by diffeomorphisms having blender-horseshoes.

Blender-horseshoes in center-unstable Hénon-like families

A blender-horseshoe is a locally maximal transitive hyperbolic set that appears in dimension at least three carrying a distinctive geometrical property: its local stable manifold "behaves" as a manifold of topological dimension greater than the expected one (the dimension of the stable bundle). This property persists under perturbations turning this kind of dynamics an important piece in the global description of robust non-hyperbolic systems. In this paper, we consider a parameterized family of center-unstable Hénon-like of endomorphisms in dimension three and show how blender-horseshoes naturally occur in a specific parameter range.
