A classification of triangular Riemann surfaces with $2p^2$ automorphisms

In this article we provide a classification and description of compact Riemann surfaces admitting a triangular action of a group of order $2p^2,$ where $p$ is an odd prime number. We obtain that all such Riemann surfaces are isomorphic to curves defined over the rational numbers. As a by-product, we derive a classification of orientably-regular hypermaps whose orientation-preserving automorphism group has order $2p^2.$

${\mathbb Z}_{k}^{m}$-actions of signature $(0;k,\stackrel{n+1}{\ldots},k)$

An action of a finite group $G$ is a pair $(S,\hat{G})$, where $S$ is a compact Riemann surface of genus $g \geqslant 2$ and $\hat{G} \leqslant {\rm Aut}(S)$ is isomorphic to $G$. To each action $(S,\hat{G})$ there is associated a signature $(γ;k_{1},\ldots,k_{r})$ that codifies the orbifold structure of $S/\hat{G}$. Two actions of $G$, say $(S_{1},G_{1})$ and $(S_{2},G_{2})$, are topologically equivalent if there is an orientation-preserving homeomorphism $φ:S_{1} \to S_{2}$ such that $φG_{1} φ^{-1}=G_{2}$. Topologically equivalent actions necessarily must have the same signature. The problem of determining the number of different topological actions of $G$ for a given signature is in general a difficult task. In this article, we describe, up to topological equivalence, those actions when $G$ is an abelian group and quotient genus $γ=0$. We are particularly interested in the case $G={\mathbb Z}_{k}^{m}$ and the quotient signature of the action to be of the form $(0;k,\stackrel{n+1}{\ldots},k)$.

On orientably-regular maps of Euler characteristic $-2p^2$

In this article, we study orientably-regular maps of Euler characteristic $-2p^2$ and classify those that admit a group of orientation-preserving automorphisms of order $10p^2$, where $p$ is a prime number. Along the way, we classify all compact Riemann surfaces (or complex algebraic curves) of genus $1+p^2$ endowed with a group of conformal automorphisms of order $5p^2$.

Algebraic models of cyclic $k$-gonal curves

In this paper, we describe explicit algebraic equations of tame cyclic $k$-gonal curves, where $k \geq 2$ is an integer, reflecting the action of the normalizer of a tame cyclic $k$-gonal automorphism. For $k$ a prime integer, this was previously done by A. Wootton.

A generalisation of the pencil of Kuribayashi-Komiya quartics

The pencil of Kuribayashi-Komiya quartics $$ x^4 + y^4 + z^4 + t(x^2y^2 + x^2z^2 + y^2z^2)=0 \, \mbox{ where } t \in \bar{\mathbb{C}} $$is a complex one-dimensional family of Riemann surfaces of genus three endowed with a group of automorphisms isomorphic to the symmetric group of order twenty-four. This pencil has been extensively studied from different points of view. This paper is aimed at studying, for each prime number $p \geqslant 5$, the pencil of \textit{generalised Kuribayashi-Komiya curves} $\mathcal{F}_p$, given by the curves $$x^{2p}+y^{2p}+z^{2p}+t(x^p y^p +x^p z^p +y^p z^p)=0\mbox{ where } t \in \bar{\mathbb{C}}.$$We determine the full automorphism group $G$ of each smooth member $X \in \mathcal{F}_p$ and study the action of $G$ and of its subgroups on $X$. In particular, we show that no member of the pencil is hyperelliptic. As a by-product, we derive a classification of all those Riemann surfaces of genus $(p-1)(2p-1)$ that are endowed with a group of automorphisms isomorphic to the full automorphism group of the generic smooth member of $\mathcal{F}_p.$

The locus of Riemann surfaces of genus $2(p-1)$ with $4p$ automorphisms

Let $p \geqslant 5$ be a prime number. In this article we provide a complete and explicit description of the locus formed by the compact Riemann surfaces of genus $2(p-1)$ that are endowed with a group of automorphisms of order $4p$. In addition, we provide isogeny decompositions of the corresponding Jacobian varieties and study if the most symmetric ones admit complex and real multiplication.

Classifying compact Riemann surfaces by number of symmetries

In this article we consider compact Riemann surfaces that are uniquely determined by the property of possessing a group of automorphisms of a prescribed order, strengthening uniqueness results proved by Nakagawa. More precisely, we deal with the cases in which such an order is $3g$ and $3g+3,$ where $g$ is the genus. We prove that if $g$ is odd (respectively $g$ even and $g \not \equiv 2 \mbox{ mod } 3$) then there exists a unique Riemann surface of genus $g$ with a group of automorphisms of order $3g$ (respectively $3g+3$). A similar conclusion can be derived in terms of orientably-regular hypermaps. In addition, we determine the full automorphism group of such Riemann surfaces and provide decompositions of their Jacobians.

On Dihedral Group Actions on Riemann Surfaces

This article deals with dihedral group actions on compact Riemann surfaces and the interplay between different geometric data associated to them. First, a bijective correspondence between geometric signatures and analytic representations is obtained. Second, a refinement of a result of Bujalance, Cirre, Gamboa and Gromadzki about signature realization is provided. Finally, we apply our results to isogeny decompositions of Jacobians by Prym varieties and by elliptic curves, extending results of Carocca, Recillas and Rodríguez. In particular, we give a complete classification of Jacobians with dihedral action whose group algebra decomposition induces a decomposition into factors of the same dimension.

On non-normal subvarieties of the moduli space of Riemann surfaces

In this article, we consider certain irreducible subvarieties of the moduli space of compact Riemann surfaces determined by the specification of actions of finite groups. We address the general problem of determining which among them are non-normal subvarieties of the moduli space.

Infinitely many Riemann surfaces with transitive action on Weierstrass points

In this short note, we prove the existence of infinitely many pairwise non-isomorphic non-hyperelliptic Riemann surfaces with automorphism group acting transitively on the Weierstrass points. We also found all those compact Riemann surfaces with automorphism group acting transitively on the Weierstrass points, under the assumption that they are simple.

On the Jacobian variety of the Accola-Maclachlan curve of genus four

In this short note, we study the Jacobian variety of the Accola-Maclachlan curve of genus four and obtain explicitly its Poincaré isogeny decomposition. More precisely, we show that its Jacobian variety is isomorphic to the product of two abelian surfaces that are simple, and provide explicitly a Riemann matrix for each one of the involved abelian surfaces

On large prime actions on Riemann surfaces

In this article we study compact Riemann surfaces of genus $g$ with an automorphism of prime order $g+1.$ The main result provides a classification of such surfaces. In addition, we give a description of them as algebraic curves, determine and realise their full automorphism groups and compute their fields of moduli. We also study some aspects of their Jacobian varieties such as isogeny decompositions and complex multiplication. Finally, we determine the period matrix of the Accola-Maclachlan curve of genus four.

Abelian varieties and Riemann surfaces with generalized quaternion group action

In this article we consider Riemann surfaces and abelian varieties endowed with a group of automorphisms isomorphic to a generalized quaternion group. We provide isogeny decompositions of each abelian variety with this action, compute dimensions of the corresponding factors and provide conditions under which this decomposition is nontrivial. We then specialize our results to the case of Jacobians and relate them to the so-called genus-zero actions on Riemann surfaces. We also give a complete classification and description of the complex one-dimensional families of Riemann surfaces and Jacobians with a generalized quaternion group action, extending known results concerning the quasiplatonic case. Finally, we construct and describe explicit families of abelian varieties with a quaternion group action and derive a period matrix for the Jacobian of the surface with full automorphism group of second largest order among the hyperelliptic surfaces of genus four.

Nilpotent groups of automorphisms of families of Riemann surfaces

In this article we extend results of Zomorrodian to determine upper bounds for the order of a nilpotent group of automorphisms of a complex $d$-dimensional family of compact Riemann surfaces, where $d \geqslant 1.$ We provide conditions under which these bounds are sharp. In addition, for the one-dimensional case we construct and describe an explicit family attaining the bound for infinitely many genera. We obtain similar results for the case of $p$-groups of automorphisms.

A note on Jacobians of quasiplatonic Riemann surfaces with complex multiplication

Let $m \geqslant 6$ be an even integer. In this short note we prove that the Jacobian variety of a quasiplatonic Riemann surface with associated group of automorphisms isomorphic to $C_2^2 \rtimes_2 C_m$ admits complex multiplication. We then extend this result to provide a criterion under which the Jacobian variety of a quasiplatonic Riemann surface admits complex multiplication.

On families of Riemann surfaces with automorphisms

In this article we determine the maximal possible order of the automorphism group of the form $ag + b$, where $a$ and $b$ are integers, of a complex three and four-dimensional family of compact Riemann surfaces of genus $g$, appearing for all genus. In addition, we construct and describe explicit complex three and four-dimensional families possessing these maximal number of automorphisms.

On $pq$-fold regular covers of the projective line

Let $p$ and $q$ be odd prime numbers. In this paper we study non-abelian pq-fold regular covers of the projective line, determine algebraic models for some special cases and provide a general isogeny decomposition of the corresponding Jacobian varieties. We also give a classification and description of the one-dimensional families of compact Riemann surfaces as before.
