Real-space topology and charge order in the Haldane-Holstein Model

We study the half-filled Haldane-Holstein model, where a paradigmatic Chern insulator is coupled to fully dynamical phonons, and provide an unbiased characterization of how retarded electron-phonon interactions destabilize Chern topology. Using determinant quantum Monte Carlo, we find that increasing the coupling drives an abrupt, first-order transition from a Chern insulator to a staggered charge-density wave that acts as a dynamical sublattice (Semenoff) mass. The transition is simultaneously signaled by a nearly quantized many-body Bott index and a real-space local Chern marker constructed from the interacting Green's function, both of which collapse as the charge order parameter becomes extensive. Spectral and open-boundary calculations reveal concomitant gap closing and the loss of boundary spectral weight at the critical coupling. Despite the generic phase problem induced by broken time-reversal symmetry, we show that it remains mild in the low-frequency regime and that the average phase factor sharply tracks the Chern insulator-charge density wave boundary. Our results establish a concrete route by which electron-phonon coupling can trigger a discontinuous collapse of Chern topology and provide experimentally relevant signatures for correlated topological platforms.

Spin-orbit coupled periodic Anderson model: Kondo-Dirac semimetal and orbital-selective antiferromagnetic semimetal

We investigate the periodic Anderson model composed of an itinerant $c$-band and a strongly localized $f$-band, featuring on-site electron-electron interactions in the $f$-orbitals. The two bands interact via a hybridization term with spin-orbit coupling, which enables spin-flip processes. In the non-interacting limit, these profoundly alter the electronic structure, leading to the emergence of flat bands, van Hove singularities, and, most notably, Dirac cones within a single Kondo-Dirac semimetal order. The strongly interacting regime is explored via the determinant quantum Monte Carlo method, in the absence of the sign problem, where we unveil a complete ground-state phase diagram revealing two distinct phases, the Kondo-Dirac semimetal phase and a novel antiferromagnetic semimetal phase. Their characterization by the spectral functions establishes an orbital-selective Mott transition in the antiferromagnetic semimetal phase, marked by the opening of a gap exclusively in the $f$-orbital while Dirac cones persist in the $c$-orbital. Conversely, in the Kondo-Dirac semimetal phase, both $c$- and $f$-orbitals sustain robust Dirac cones. We establish that spin-orbit coupling in the hybridization term gives rise to Dirac cones, which, combined with additional symmetry-breaking conditions, can generate novel topological states.

The Two-Dimensional Rashba-Holstein Model: A Quantum Monte Carlo Approach

In this work, we investigate the impact of Rashba spin-orbit coupling (RSOC) on the formation of charge-density wave (CDW) and superconducting (SC) phases in the Holstein model on a half-filled square lattice. Using unbiased finite-temperature Quantum Monte Carlo simulations, we go beyond mean-field approaches to determine the ground state order parameter as a function of RSOC and phonon frequency. Our results reveal that the Rashba metal is unstable due to particle-hole instabilities, favoring the emergence of a CDW phase for any RSOC value. In the limit of a pure Rashba hopping, the model exhibits a distinct behavior with the appearance of four Weyl cones at half-filling, where quantum phase transitions are expected to occur at strong interactions. Indeed, a quantum phase transition, belonging to the Gross-Neveu Ising universality class between a semi-metal and CDW emerges at finite phonon frequency dependent coupling $λ_c$. In the antiadiabatic limit we observe an enhanced symmetry in the infrared that unifies SC and CDW orders. These results advance our understanding of competing CDW and SC phases in systems with spin-orbit coupling, providing insights that may help clarify the behavior of related materials.

Weyl semimetallic, Néel, spiral, and vortex states in the Rashba-Hubbard model

We investigate the evolution of magnetic phases in the Hubbard model under strong Rashba spin-orbit coupling on a square lattice. By using Lanczos exact diagonalization and determinant quantum Monte Carlo (DQMC) simulations, we explore the emergence of various magnetic alignments as the ratio between the regular hopping amplitude, $t$, and the Rashba hopping term, $t_R$, is varied over a broad range of Hubbard interaction strengths, $U$. In the limit $t_R \rightarrow 0$, the system exhibits Néel antiferromagnetic order, while when $t \sim t_R$, a spiral magnetic phase emerges due to the induced anisotropic Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction. For $t_R > t$, we identify the onset of a spin vortex phase. At the extreme limit $t = 0$($t_R \neq 0 $), we perform finite-size scaling analysis in the Weyl semimetal regime to pinpoint the quantum critical point associated with the spin vortex phase, employing sign-free quantum Monte Carlo simulations - the extracted critical exponents are consistent with a Gross-Neveu-type quantum phase transition.

The extended Hubbard model on a honeycomb lattice

The lack of both nesting and a van Hove singularity at half filling, together with the presence of Dirac cones makes the honeycomb lattice a special laboratory to explore strongly correlated phenomena. For instance, at zero temperature the repulsive [attractive] Hubbard model only undergoes a transition to an antiferromagnetic [$s$-wave superconducting degenerate with charge density wave (SC-CDW)] for sufficiently strong on-site coupling, $U/t\gtrsim 3.85$ [$U/t\lesssim -3.85$]; in between these, the system is a semi-metal, by virtue of the Dirac cones. The addition of an additional interaction, $V>0$ or $V<0$, between fermions in nearest neighbor orbitals should break the SC-CDW degeneracy giving rise to a phase diagram quite distinct from the one for the square lattice. Here we perform determinant quantum Monte Carlo simulations to investigate the whole phase diagram, covering the four combinations of signs of $U$ and $V$; the use of complex Hubbard-Stratonovich fields renders the region $|V|\leq |U|/3$ free from the `minus sign problem'. We calculate structure factors associated with different orderings, which, together with the double occupancy and the average sign allows us to map out the whole phase diagram. We have found that the SM phase forms a zone from which ordered phases are excluded, preventing the stabilization of a $d$-wave SC phase, i.e., only $s$-wave pairing is allowed.

The half-filled extended Hubbard model on a square lattice: Phase boundaries from determinant quantum Monte Carlo simulations

The extended Hubbard model (EHM) describes fermions on a lattice coupled through on-site, $U$, and first-neighbor, $V$, interactions. In the context of high-$T_c$ cuprates, antiferromagnetic fluctuations may lead to an attractive channel, hence to superconductivity. Despite interest in the two-dimensional version of the model, the current knowledge about the phase diagram is still far from complete. Here, we report on the results of extensive determinant quantum Monte Carlo simulations for this model at half filling, in which we have used the average sign of the product of fermionic determinants as an additional observable to locate critical points. We arrive at a ground state phase diagram in the $U$-$V$ plane in which the boundaries involving antiferromagnetic, charge-ordered, $s$- and $d$-wave superconductivity, and phase-separated phases are quantitatively set with good accuracy. We have also proposed a partial phase diagram, $T_c(U,V)$, featuring critical temperatures for the CDW and $s$-wave superconducting phases.

The impact of Rashba spin-orbit coupling in charge-ordered systems

We study the impact of the Rashba spin-orbit coupling (RSOC) on the stability of charge-density wave (CDW) in systems with large electron-phonon coupling (EPC). Here, the EPC is considered in the framework of the Holstein model at the half-filled square lattice. We start obtaining the phase diagram of the Rashba-Holstein model using the Hartree-Fock mean-field theory, and identifying the boundaries of the CDW and Rashba metal phases. As our main result, we notice that the RSOC disfavors the CDW phase, driving the system to a correlated Rashba metal. Proceeding, we employ a cluster perturbation theory (CPT) approach to investigate the phase diagram beyond the Hartree-Fock approximation. The quantum correlations captured by CPT indicate that the RSOC is even more detrimental to CDW than previously anticipated. That is, the Rashba metal region is observed to be expanded in comparison to the mean-field case. Additionally, we investigate pairing correlations, and the results further strengthen the identification of critical points.

Magnetic impurities in a charge-ordered background

We investigate how magnetic impurities may affect a system exhibiting charge-density wave (CDW) in its ground state. We consider a disordered Hubbard-Holstein model with a homogeneous electron-phonon interaction, but with a (randomly chosen) fraction of sites displaying a non-zero Coulomb repulsion, $U$, and perform state-of-the-art finite-temperature quantum Monte Carlo simulations. For a single magnetic impurity, charge-charge correlations hamper the spin-spin ones around the repulsive site, thus requiring a strong enough value of $U$ to create non-negligible antiferromagnetic (AFM) correlations. As the number of magnetic impurities increases, these AFM correlations become deleterious to CDW order and its features. First, the critical temperature is drastically reduced, and seems to vanish around 40$\%$ of impurities (for fixed $U/λ=2$), which we correlate with the classical percolation threshold. We also notice that just a small amount of disorder suffices to create a \textit{bad insulating} state, with the suppression of both Peierls and spin gaps, even within the charge-ordered phase. Finally, we have also found that pairing correlations are enhanced at large doping, driven by the competition between CDW and AFM tendencies.

Superconducting Kondo phase in an orbitally-separated bilayer

The nature of superconductivity in heavy-fermion materials is a subject under intense debate, and controlling this many-body state is central for its eventual understanding. Here, we examine how proximity effects may change this phenomenon, by investigating the effects of an additional metallic layer on the top of a Kondo-lattice, and allowing for pairing in the former. We analyze a bilayer Kondo Lattice Model with an on-site Hubbard interaction, $-U$, on the additional layer, using a mean-field approach. For $U=0$, we notice a drastic change in the density-of-states due to multiple-orbital singlet resonating combinations. It destroys the well-known Kondo insulator at half filling, leading to a metallic ground state, which, in turn, enhances antiferromagnetism through the polarization of the conduction electrons. For $U\neq 0$, a superconducting Kondo state sets in at zero temperature, with the occurrence of unconventional pairing amplitudes involving $f$-electrons. We establish that this remarkable feature is only possible due to the proximity effects of the additional layer. At finite temperatures we find that the critical superconducting temperature, $T_c$, decreases with the interlayer hybridization. We have also established that a zero temperature superconducting amplitude tracks $T_c$, which reminisces the BCS proportionality between the superconducting gap and $T_c$.
