Signature spectrum of positive braids

We derive a lower bound for all Levine-Tristram signatures of positive braid links, linear in terms of the first Betti number. As a consequence, we obtain upper and lower bounds on the ratio of fixed pairs of Levine-Tristram signature invariants, valid uniformly on all positive braid monoids.

Minor theory for quasipositive surfaces

The set of quasipositive surfaces is closed under incompressible inclusion. We prove that the induced order on fibre surfaces of positive braid links is almost a well-quasi-order. When restricting to quasipositive surfaces containing a fixed root of a full twist, we get an actual well-quasi-order.

Average four-genus of two-bridge knots

We prove that the expected value of the ratio between the smooth four-genus and the Seifert genus of two-bridge knots tends to zero as the crossing number tends to infinity.

Untwisting 3-strand torus knots

We prove that the signature bound for the topological 4-genus of 3-strand torus knots is sharp, using McCoy's twisting method. We also show that the bound is off by at most 1 for 4-strand and 6-strand torus knots, and improve the upper bound on the asymptotic ratio between the topological 4-genus and the Seifert genus of torus knots from 2/3 to 14/27.

Coxeter groups and meridional rank of links

We prove the meridional rank conjecture for twisted links and arborescent links associated to bipartite trees with even weights. These links are substantial generalizations of pretzels and two-bridge links, respectively. Lower bounds on meridional rank are obtained via Coxeter quotients of the groups of link complements. Matching upper bounds on bridge number are found using the Wirtinger numbers of link diagrams, a combinatorial tool developed by the authors.

The bridge number of arborescent links with many twigs

We prove the meridional rank conjecture for arborescent links associated to plane trees with the following property: all branching points carry a straight branch to at least three leaves. The proof involves an upper bound on the bridge number in terms of the maximal number of link components of the underlying tree, valid for all arborescent links.

Khovanov width and dealternation number of positive braid links

We give asymptotically sharp upper bounds for the Khovanov width and the dealternation number of positive braid links, in terms of their crossing number. The same braid-theoretic technique, combined with Ozsváth, Stipsicz, and Szabó's Upsilon invariant, allows us to determine the exact cobordism distance between torus knots with braid index two and six.

Checkerboard graph monodromies

We associate an open book with any connected plane checkerboard graph, thus providing a common extension of the classes of prime positive braid links and positive tree-like Hopf plumbings. As an application, we prove that the link type of a prime positive braid closure is determined by the linking graph associated with that braid.

Distortion of spheres and surfaces in space

It is known that the surface of a cone over the unit disc with large height has smaller distortion than the standard embedding of the 2-sphere in $\mathbb R^3$. In this note we show that distortion minimisers exist among convex embedded 2-spheres and have uniformly bounded eccentricity. Moreover, we prove that $π/2$ is a sharp lower bound on the distortion of embedded closed surfaces of positive genus.

Minor theory for surfaces and divides of maximal signature

The paper is partially withdrawn: in its current form, Lemma 2.3 is false, so that our proof of Theorem A and Proposition B has an important gap. We were unable to fix it yet. Any help is most welcome. We prove that the restriction of surface minority to fiber surfaces of divides is a well-quasi-order. Here surface minority is the partial order on isotopy classes of surfaces embedded in the 3-space associated with incompressible subsurfaces. The proof relies on a refinement of the Robertson-Seymour Theorem that involves colored graphs embedded into the plane. Our result implies that every property of fiber surfaces of divides that is preserved by surface minority is characterized by a finite number of prohibited minors. For the signature to be equal to the first Betti number is such a property. We explicitly determine the corresponding prohibited minors. As an application we establish a correspondance between divide links of maximal signature and Dynkin diagrams.

Signature and concordance of positive knots

We derive a linear estimate of the signature of positive knots, in terms of their genus. As an application, we show that every knot concordance class contains at most finitely many positive knots.

Symmetric quotients of knot groups and a filtration of the Gordian graph

We define a metric filtration of the Gordian graph by an infinite family of 1-dense subgraphs. The n-th subgraph of this family is generated by all knots whose fundamental groups surject to a symmetric group with parameter at least n, where all meridians are mapped to transpositions. Incidentally, we verify the Meridional Rank Conjecture for a family of knots with unknotting number one yet arbitrarily high bridge number.

On the topological 4-genus of torus knots

We prove that the topological locally flat slice genus of large torus knots takes up less than three quarters of the ordinary genus. As an application, we derive the best possible linear estimate of the topological slice genus for torus knots with non-maximal signature invariant.

On the stabilisation height of fibre surfaces in $S^3$

The stabilisation height of a fibre surface in the 3-sphere is the minimal number of Hopf plumbing operations needed to attain a stable fibre surface from the initial surface. We show that families of fibre surfaces related by iterated Stallings twists have unbounded stabilisation height.

The volume of positive braid links

Based on recent work by Futer, Kalfagianni and Purcell, we prove that the volume of sufficiently complicated positive braid links is proportional to the signature defect $Δσ=2g-σ$.
