Regular homomorphisms, with a twist

Let $X/K$ be a variety over a field, and $A/K$ an abelian variety. A regular homomorphism to $A$ (in codimension $i$) induces, for every smooth geometrically connected pointed $K$-scheme $(T,t_0)$ and every cycle class $Z \in CH^i(T\times X)$, a morphism $T \to A$ of varieties over $K$. In this note we show that, even if $T$ admits no $K$-point, the data $(T,Z)$ determines a torsor $A^{(T,Z)}$ over $K$ under $A$ and a $K$-morphism $T \to A^{(T,Z)}$. This can be used to provide an obstruction to the existence of algebraic cycles defined over $K$. We then connect this obstruction to some recent results of Hassett--Tschinkel and Benoist--Wittenberg on rationality of threefolds.

Moduli spaces of varieties of general type are naturally of log general type

We generalize work of Popa-Schnell on Viehweg hyperbolicity for smooth projective varieties to the case of smooth Deligne-Mumford stacks. The results of Popa-Schnell build on results of Viehweg-Zuo, utilize a result of Campana-Păun, and extend results of Kebekus-Kovács and Patakfalvi. We show that if a smooth proper DM stack with projective coarse moduli space parameterizes a family of varieties of general type having maximal variation, then the natural log canonical bundle of the stack is big. We also consider implications for the coarse moduli space of the stack, and apply the results to several standard moduli spaces.

Moduli spaces of snc klt KSBA stable pairs are naturally of log general type

We generalize work of Wei-Wu on Viehweg hyperbolicity for families of stable pairs over smooth projective varieties to the case of smooth Deligne-Mumford stacks. The results of Wei-Wu build on results of Popa-Schnell and Viehweg-Zuo, utilize a result of Campana-Păun, and extend results of Kebekus-Kovács and Patakfalvi. We apply our results to smooth proper moduli stacks parameterizing generically klt relatively simple normal crossings KSBA stable pairs, showing that such moduli stacks naturally have big log canonical bundles. We also consider implications for their coarse moduli spaces.

Foliations, slope stability, and positivity of log canonical bundles on Deligne-Mumford stacks

We generalize some results of Campana-Păun regarding foliations, slope stability, and positivity of log canonical bundles on smooth projective varieties to the case of smooth proper DM stacks admitting projective coarse moduli spaces. This paper is the third in a series aiming to generalize results of Popa-Schnell and Wei-Wu on Viehweg hyperbolicity to the setting of DM stacks, and in particular, to certain KSBA moduli spaces.

Movable curve classes and slope stability on Deligne-Mumford stacks

We generalize some results in the literature on movable curve classes and slope stability of coherent sheaves on smooth projective varieties to the case of smooth proper DM stacks admitting projective coarse moduli spaces. As an application, we establish a Bogomolov-Gieseker inequality on such stacks. This paper is the second in a series aiming to generalize results of Popa-Schnell and Wei-Wu on Viehweg hyperbolicity to the setting of DM stacks, and in particular, to certain KSBA moduli spaces.

Positivity in the context of Hodge modules and Higgs bundles on Deligne-Mumford stacks

We generalize positivity results due to Popa-Wu and Popa-Schnell for Hodge modules and Higgs bundles on smooth projective varieties to the case of smooth proper DM stacks admitting projective coarse moduli spaces. This paper is the first in a series aiming to generalize results of Popa-Schnell and Wei-Wu on Viehweg hyperbolicity to the setting of DM stacks, and in particular, to certain KSBA moduli spaces.

Decomposition of the diagonal, intermediate Jacobians, and universal codimension-2 cycles in positive characteristic

We consider the connections among algebraic cycles, abelian varieties, and stable rationality of smooth projective varieties in positive characteristic. Recently Voisin constructed two new obstructions to stable rationality for rationally connected complex projective threefolds by giving necessary and sufficient conditions for the existence of a cohomological decomposition of the diagonal. In this paper, we show how to extend these obstructions to rationally chain connected threefolds in positive characteristic via ell-adic cohomological decomposition of the diagonal. This requires extending results in Hodge theory regarding intermediate Jacobians and Abel--Jacobi maps to the setting of algebraic representatives. For instance, we show that the algebraic representative for codimension-two cycle classes on a geometrically stably rational threefold admits a canonical auto-duality, which in characteristic zero agrees with the principal polarization on the intermediate Jacobian coming from Hodge theory. As an application, we extend a result of Voisin, and show that in characteristic greater than two, a desingularization of a very general quartic double solid with seven nodes fails one of these two new obstructions, while satisfying all of the classical obstructions. More precisely, it does not admit a universal codimension-two cycle class. In the process, we establish some results on the moduli space of nodal degree-four polarized K3 surfaces in positive characteristic.

Images of abelian schemes

We provide some conditions for the image of a morphism of abelian schemes to again be an abelian scheme. For context, in characteristic 0, the image is always an abelian scheme; in mixed and positive characteristic the image can fail to be an abelian scheme, and so it is in this setting that the conditions we provide are pertinent.

Putting the p back in Prym

After Jacobians of curves, Prym varieties are perhaps the next most studied abelian varieties. They turn out to be quite useful in a number of contexts. For technical reasons, there does not appear to be any systematic treatment of Prym varieties in characteristic 2, and due to our recent interest in this topic, the purpose of this paper is to fill in that gap. Our main result is a classification of branched covers of curves in characteristic 2 that give rise to Prym varieties. We are also interested in the case of Prym varieties in the relative setting, and so we develop that theory here as well, including an extension of Welters' Criterion.

Three approaches to a categorical Torelli theorem for cubic threefolds of non-Eckardt type via the equivariant Kuznetsov components

Let $Y$ be a cubic threefold with a non-Eckardt type involution $τ$. Our first main result is that the $τ$-equivariant category of the Kuznetsov component $\mathcal{K}u_{\mathbb{Z}_2}(Y)$ determines the isomorphism class of $Y$ for general $(Y,τ)$. We shall prove this categorical Torelli theorem via three approaches: a noncommutative Hodge theoretical one (using a generalization of the intermediate Jacobian construction due to Alexander Perry), a Bridgeland moduli theoretical one (using equivariant stability conditions), and a Chow theoretical one (using some techniques in [kuznetsovnonclodedfield2021]).The remaining part of the paper is devoted to proving an equivariant infinitesimal categorical Torelli for non-Eckardt cubic threefolds $(Y,τ)$. To accomplish it, we prove a compatibility theorem on the algebra structures of the Hochschild cohomology of the bounded derived category $D^b(X)$ of a smooth projective variety $X$ and on the Hochschild cohomology of a semi-orthogonal component of $D^b(X)$. Another key ingredient is a generalization of a result in [macri2009infinitesima] which shows that the twisted Hochschild-Kostant-Rosenberg isomorphism is compatible with the actions on the Hochschild cohomology and on the singular cohomology induced by an automorphism of $X$. In appendix, we prove an equivariant categorical Torelli theorem for arbitrary cubic threefold with a geometric involution under a natural assumption.

A complete answer to Albanese base change for incomplete varieties

Albanese varieties provide a standard tool in algebraic geometry for converting questions about varieties in general, to questions about Abelian varieties. A result of Serre provides the existence of an Albanese variety for any geometrically connected and geometrically reduced scheme of finite type over a field, and a result of Grothendieck--Conrad establishes that Albanese varieties are stable under base change of field provided the scheme is, in addition, proper. A result of Raynaud shows that base change can fail for Albanese varieties without this properness hypothesis. In this paper we show that Albanese varieties of geometrically connected and geometrically reduced schemes of finite type over a field are stable under separable field extensions. We also show that the failure of base change in general is explained by the L/K-image for purely inseparable extensions L/K.

Non-isomorphic smooth compactifications of the moduli space of cubic surfaces

The moduli space of complex cubic surfaces has three different, but isomorphic, compact realizations: as a GIT quotient, as a Baily--Borel compactification of a ball quotient, and as a compactified $K$-moduli space. From all three perspectives, there is a unique boundary point corresponding to non-stable surfaces. From the GIT point of view, to deal with this point, it is natural to consider the Kirwan blowup, while from the ball quotient point of view it is natural to consider the toroidal compactification. Both these spaces have the same cohomology and and it is therefore natural to ask whether they are isomorphic. Here we show that this is in fact not the case. Indeed, we show the more refined statement that both spaces are equivalent in the Grothendieck ring, but not $K$-equivalent. Along the way, we establish a number of results and techniques for dealing with singularities and canonical classes of Kirwan blowups and toroidal compactifications of ball quotients.

The moduli space of cubic threefolds with a non-Eckardt type involution via intermediate Jacobians

There are two types of involutions on a cubic threefold: the Eckardt type (which has been studied by the first named and the third named authors) and the non-Eckardt type. Here we study cubic threefolds with a non-Eckardt type involution, whose fixed locus consists of a line and a cubic curve. Specifically, we consider the period map sending a cubic threefold with a non-Eckardt type involution to the invariant part of the intermediate Jacobian. The main result is that the global Torelli Theorem holds for the period map. To prove the theorem, we project the cubic threefold from the pointwise fixed line and exhibit the invariant part of the intermediate Jacobian as a Prym variety of a (pseudo-)double cover of stable curves. The proof relies on a result of Ikeda and Naranjo-Ortega on the injectivity of the related Prym map. We also describe the invariant part of the intermediate Jacobian via the projection from a general invariant line and show that the two descriptions are related by the bigonal construction.

A functorial approach to regular homomorphisms

Classically, regular homomorphisms have been defined as a replacement for Abel--Jacobi maps for smooth varieties over an algebraically closed field. In this work, we interpret regular homomorphisms as morphisms from the functor of families of algebraically trivial cycles to abelian varieties and thereby define regular homomorphisms in the relative setting, e.g., families of schemes parameterized by a smooth variety over a given field. In that general setting, we establish the existence of an initial regular homomorphism, going by the name of algebraic representative, for codimension-2 cycles on a smooth proper scheme over the base. This extends a result of Murre for codimension-2 cycles on a smooth projective scheme over an algebraically closed field. In addition, we prove base change results for algebraic representatives as well as descent properties for algebraic representatives along separable field extensions. In the case where the base is a smooth variety over a subfield of the complex numbers we identify the algebraic representative for relative codimension-2 cycles with a subtorus of the intermediate Jacobian fibration which was constructed in previous work.

The moduli space of cubic surface pairs via the intermediate Jacobians of Eckardt cubic threefolds

We study the moduli space of pairs consisting of a smooth cubic surface and a smooth hyperplane section, via a Hodge theoretic period map due to Laza, Pearlstein, and the second named author. The construction associates to such a pair a so-called Eckardt cubic threefold, admitting an involution, and the period map sends the pair to the anti-invariant part of the intermediate Jacobian of this cubic threefold, with respect to this involution. Our main result is that the global Torelli theorem holds for this period map; i.e., the period map is injective. To prove the result, we describe the anti-invariant part of the intermediate Jacobian as a Prym variety of a branched cover. Our proof uses results of Naranjo-Ortega, Bardelli-Ciliberto-Verra, and Nagaraj-Ramanan, on related Prym maps. In fact, we are able to recover the degree of one of these Prym maps by describing positive dimensional fibers, in the same spirit as a result of Donagi-Smith on the degree of the Prym map for connected étale double covers of genus 6 curves.

The Walker Abel-Jacobi map descends

For a complex projective manifold, Walker has defined a regular homomorphism lifting Griffiths' Abel-Jacobi map on algebraically trivial cycle classes to a complex abelian variety, which admits a finite homomorphism to the Griffiths intermediate Jacobian. Recently Suzuki gave an alternate, Hodge-theoretic, construction of this Walker Abel-Jacobi map. We provide a third construction based on a general lifting property for surjective regular homomorphisms, and prove that the Walker Abel-Jacobi map descends canonically to any field of definition of the complex projective manifold. In addition, we determine the image of the l-adic Bloch map restricted to algebraically trivial cycle classes in terms of the coniveau filtration.

A tour of stable reduction with applications

The Deligne-Mumford stable reduction theorem asserts that for a family of stable curves over the punctured disk, after a finite base change, the family can be completed in a unique way to a family of stable curves over the disk. In this survey we discuss stable reduction theorems in a number of different contexts. This includes a review of recent results on abelian varieties, canonically polarized varieties, and singularities. We also consider the semi-stable reduction theorem and results concerning simultaneous stable reduction.
