Sign Reversal of the Hall Response in a Crystalline Superconductor

We consider the Hall conductivity due to the motion of a vortex in a lattice-model of a clean superconductor, using a combination of general arguments, unrestricted Hartree-Fock calculations, and exact diagonalization. In the weak coupling limit, $k_F ξ\gg 1$, the sign of the Hall response of the superconducting state is the same as that of the normal (non-superconducting) state. For intermediate and strong coupling, however, ($k_F ξ\sim 1$) we find that the sign of the Hall response in the superconducting state can be opposite to that of the normal state. In addition, we find that the sign reversal of the Hall response is correlated with a discontinuous change in the density profile at the vortex core. Implications for experiments in the cuprate superconductors are discussed.

Classification of Mixed State Topology in One Dimension

We show how to generalize the concepts of identifying and classifying symmetry protected topological phases in 1D to the case of an arbitrary mixed state. The pure state concepts are reviewed using a concrete spin-1 model. For the mixed state setup we demonstrate our findings numerically using matrix product state algorithms. Starting from the ground state and applying various types of noise sources we find a transient regime where the system is driven out of equilibrium while retaining its topological properties.

Majorana modes and $p$-wave superfluids for fermionic atoms in optical lattices

We present a simple approach to create a strong $p$-wave interaction for fermions in an optical lattice. The crucial step is that the combination of a lattice setup with different orbital states and $s$-wave interactions can give rise to a strong induced $p$-wave pairing. We identify different topological phases and demonstrate that the setup offers a natural way to explore the transition from Kitaev's Majorana wires to two-dimensional $p$-wave superfluids. We demonstrate how this design can induce Majorana modes at edge dislocations in the optical lattice, and we provide an experimentally feasible protocol for the observation of the non-Abelian statistics.

Reply to "Comment on 'Z2-slave-spin theory for strongly correlated fermions' "

We show that the physical subspace in the Z2-slave-spin theory is conserved under the time evolution of the system. Thus, when restricted to the physical subspace, this representation gives a complete and consistent description of the original problem. In addition, we review two known examples from the existing literature in which the projection onto the physical subspace can be relaxed: (i) the non-interacting limit in any dimension at half filling and (ii) the interacting model in the infinite dimensional limit at half filling. In both cases, physical observables are correctly obtained without explicit treatment of the constraints which define the physical subspace. In these examples, correct results are obtained, despite the fact that unphysical states enter the solution.

Dipole Interaction Mediated Laser Cooling of Polar Molecules to Ultra-cold Temperatures

We present a method to design a finite decay rate for excited rotational states in polar molecules. The setup is based on a hybrid system of polar molecules with atoms driven into a Rydberg state. The atoms and molecules are coupled via the strong dipolar exchange interaction between two rotation levels of the polar molecule and two Rydberg states. Such a controllable decay rate opens the way to optically pump the hyperfine levels of polar molecules and it enables the application of conventional laser cooling techniques for cooling polar molecules into quantum degeneracy.

Quasiparticle dynamics in a Bose insulator probed by inter-band Bragg spectroscopy

We investigate experimentally and theoretically the dynamical properties of a Mott insulator in decoupled one-dimensional chains. Using a theoretical analysis of the Bragg excitation scheme we show that the spectrum of inter-band transitions holds information on the single-particle Green's function of the insulator. In particular the existence of particle-hole coherence due to quantum fluctuations in the Mott state is clearly seen in the Bragg spectra and quantified. Finally we propose a scheme to directly measure the full, momentum resolved spectral function as obtained in angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy of solids.

Non-local Order in Elongated Dipolar Gases

Dipolar particles in an elongated trap are expected to undergo a quantum phase transition from a linear to a zigzag structure with decreasing transverse confinement. We derive the low energy effective theory of the transition showing that in presence of quantum fluctuations the Zigzag phase can be characterized by a long ranged string order, while the local Ising correlations decay as a power law. This is also confirmed using DMRG calculations on a microscopic model. The non local order in the bulk gives rise to zero energy states localized at the interface between the ordered and disordered phases. Such an interface naturally arises when the particles are subject to a weak harmonic confinement along the tube axis. We compute the signature of the edge states in the single particle tunneling spectra pointing to differences between a system with bosonic versus fermionic particles. Finally we asses the magnitude of the relevant quantum fluctuations in realistic systems of dipolar particles, including ultracold polar molecules as well as alkali atoms weakly dressed by a Rydberg excitation.

Topological Transitions for Lattice Bosons in a Magnetic Field

We study the Hall response of the Bose-Hubbard model subjected to a magnetic field. We show that the Hall conductivity is proportional to the particle density plus an integer. The phase diagram is intersected by topological transitions between different integer values. These transitions originate from points in the phase diagram with effective charge conjugation symmetry, and are attributed to degeneracies in the many body spectrum which serve as sources for the Berry curvature. We find that extensive regions in the phase diagram exhibit a negative Hall conductivity, implying that flux flow is reversed in these regions - vortices there flow upstream. We discuss experimental implications of our findings.

Quantum Walk of Two Interacting Bosons

We study the effect of interactions on the bosonic two-particle quantum walk and its corresponding spatial correlations. The combined effect of interactions and Hanbury-Brown Twiss interference results in unique spatial correlations which depend on the strength of the interaction, but not on its sign. The results are explained in light of the two-particle spectrum and the physics of attractively and repulsively bound pairs. We experimentally measure the weak interaction limit of these effects in nonlinear photonic lattices. Finally, we discuss an experimental approach to observe the strong interaction limit using single atoms in optical lattices.

Bose condensation in flat bands

We derive effective Hamiltonians for lattice bosons with strong geometrical frustration of the kinetic energy by projecting the interactions on the flat lowest Bloch band. Specifically, we consider the Bose Hubbard model on the one dimensional sawtooth lattice and the two dimensional kagome lattice. Starting from a strictly local interaction the projection gives rise to effective long-range terms stabilizing a supersolid phase at densities above nu_c=1/9 of the kagome lattice. In the sawtooth lattice on the other hand we show that the solid order, which exists at the magic filling nu_c=1/4, is unstable to further doping. The universal low-energy properties at filling 1/4+delta nu are described by the well known commensurate-incommensurate transition. We support the analytic results by detailed numerical calculations using the Density Matrix Renormalization Group and exact diagonalization. Finally, we discuss possible realizations of the models using ultracold atoms as well as frustrated quantum magnets in high magnetic fields. We compute the momentum distribution and the noise correlations, that can be extracted from time of flight experiments or neutron scattering, and point to signatures of the unique supersolid phase of the kagome lattice.

Many-body Landau-Zener dynamics in coupled 1D Bose liquids

The Landau-Zener model of a quantum mechanical two-level system driven with a linearly time dependent detuning has served over decades as a textbook paradigm of quantum dynamics. In their seminal work [L. D. Landau, Physik. Z. Sowjet. 2, 46 (1932); C. Zener, Proc. Royal Soc. London 137, 696 (1932)], Landau and Zener derived a non-perturbative prediction for the transition probability between two states, which often serves as a reference point for the analysis of more complex systems. A particularly intriguing question is whether that framework can be extended to describe many-body quantum dynamics. Here we report an experimental and theoretical study of a system of ultracold atoms, offering a direct many-body generalization of the Landau-Zener problem. In a system of pairwise tunnel-coupled 1D Bose liquids we show how tuning the correlations of the 1D gases, the tunnel coupling between the tubes and the inter-tube interactions strongly modify the original Landau-Zener picture. The results are explained using a mean-field description of the inter-tube condensate wave-function, coupled to the low-energy phonons of the 1D Bose liquid.

Universal Dephasing of Many-Body Rabi Oscillations of Atoms in One-Dimensional Traps

We study a quantum quench in a system of two coupled one-dimensional tubes of interacting atoms. After the quench the system is out of equilibrium and oscillates between the tubes with a frequency determined by microscopic parameters. Despite the high energy at which the system is prepared we find an emergent long time scale responsible for the dephasing of the oscillations and a transition at which this time scale diverges. We show that the universal properties of the dephasing and the transition arise from an infrared orthogonality catastrophe. Furthermore, we show how this universal behavior is realized in a realistic model of fermions with attractive interactions.

Mesoscopic Aspects of Strongly Interacting Cold Atoms

Harmonically trapped lattice bosons with strong repulsive interactions exhibit a superfluid-Mott-insulator heterostructure in the form of a "wedding cake". We discuss the mesoscopic aspects of such a system within a one-dimensional scattering matrix approach and calculate the scattering properties of quasi-particles at a superfluid-Mott-insulator interface as an elementary building block to describe transport phenomena across such a boundary. We apply the formalism to determine the heat conductivity through a Mott layer, a quantity relevant to describe thermalization processes in the optical lattice setup. We identify a critical hopping below which the heat conductivity is strongly suppressed.

Coherent pumping of a Mott insulator: Fermi golden rule versus Rabi oscillations

Cold atoms provide a unique arena to study many-body systems far from equilibrium. Furthermore, novel phases in cold atom systems are conveniently investigated by dynamical probes pushing the system out of equilibrium. Here, we discuss the pumping of doubly-occupied sites in a fermionic Mott insulator by a periodic modulation of the hopping amplitude. We show that deep in the insulating phase the many-body system can be mapped onto an effective two-level system which performs coherent Rabi oscillations due to the driving. Coupling the two-level system to the remaining degrees of freedom renders the Rabi oscillations damped. We compare this scheme to an alternative description where the particles are incoherently pumped into a broad continuum.
