Resonant excitations via low frequency pumping in driven magnon systems

We analyse resonant excitations of ferromagnetic magnons via microwave pumping using Floquet theory. Special focus is put on driving frequencies that are below the corresponding magnon energy, which can be excited in large parameter regions via parametric resonances. We develop a theoretical framework that analytically predicts the regions of resonances and resonance thresholds in thin films of ferro- and ferri-magnetic materials like YIG as a function of damping, amplitude and frequency. Resonance regions are separated by exceptional points of the quasi-energies and the results are compared with micromagnetic simulations. The corresponding threshold amplitudes can be estimated from a characteristic powerlaw with damping, leading to the possibility of targeted exciatations at selected wavenumbers using low frequency drive.

Tailored dissipation for directional transport in plasmonic ratchets

We present a joint experimental and theoretical study of a ratchet implemented in arra ys of evanescently coupled plasmonic waveguides with tailored losses. In this setup the time-periodic dissipation is the only active mechanism and notably, we find better rectified transport and lower losses in the transmitted signal with increased local dissipation. Using Floquet theory, we uncover a driving regime that allows efficient directional tr ansport for suitable driving frequencies and loss rates, which are linked to linear qu asienergy bands with minimal losses. These regions are separated from non-resonant beh avior by sharp transitions with characteristic exceptional points in the spectrum. Direct experimental observation of the Floquet-dissipative ratchet effect using a comb ination of real- and Fourier-space leakage radiation microscopy is provided.

Topological Defects from Quantum Reset Dynamics

We analyze mechanisms for universal out-of-equilibrium dynamics near criticality by exploring the effect of randomized quantum resetting (QR) under a finite-time quench across a quantum phase transition. Using the transverse-field Ising chain as a generic model and exploiting its exact solution, QR is found to cause a crossover of the scaling of the topological defect density with the time scale $\tau$ of the quench, from Kibble-Zurek to anti-Kibble-Zurek scaling as $\tau$ increases. This reflects a competition between non-adiabatic quench-driven excitations and QR, giving rise to local minima of the defect densities at optimal annealing times. These times and the corresponding local minima are shown to scale as universal power laws with the rate of QR. Additional results for the scaling of the mean excess energy suggest that a system driven across a quantum critical point exhibits the same scaling behavior under a linear quench with QR as with uncorrelated noise.

Tunneling resonances through periodically driven quantum dots

Periodic driving of quantum dots is analyzed as a basis for developing dynamic switching devices. We study transport through periodically modulated energy levels which are coupled to leads via tunneling coefficients. Utilizing Floquet theory a full analytic solution is found in terms of continued fractions, enabling us to efficiently calculate and analyze the transmission through the quantum dot in relevant parameter regimes. By considering levels at higher energy outside the spectrum of the transmitted particles a resonant switching effects is identified, where a very small oscillating control signal on a weakly connected quantum dot can induce perfect transmission. We also find closed form expressions using Bessel functions in the limit of small tunnel couplings. The results predict and explain resonant tunneling in nano-electronic devices as well as in corresponding setups using magnonic systems, photonic waveguides, or ultra-cold gases in optical lattices.

Understanding Floquet Resonances in Ultracold Gas Scattering

Scattering by a short-range potential with time-periodic interaction strength is investigated with a Floquet-scattering theory. Sharp resonances occur, at which the s-wave scattering length can be tuned to large positive and negative values. We show that the shape of these resonances is described by a simple formula, and find that both resonance position and prefactor can be altered by the driving strength. Our approach allows to identify the physical origin of the scattering resonances as Floquet bound states with positive energies, which are dynamically created by the drive. This insight is valuable for a detailed analysis and uncovers a general resource for enhanced or reduced scattering in Floquet systems.

Anyonic phase transitions in the 1D extended Hubbard model with fractional statistics

We study one-dimensional (1D) lattice anyons with extended Hubbard interactions at unit filling using bosonization and numerical simulations. The behavior can be continuously tuned from Bosonic to Fermionic behavior by adjusting the topological exchange angle $\theta$, which leads to a competition of different instabilities. We present the bosonization theory in presence of dynamic gauge fields, which predicts a phase diagrams of four different gapped phases with distinct dominant correlations. Advanced numerical simulations determine and analyze the exact phase transitions between Mott insulator, charge density wave, dimerized state, and Haldane insulator, all of which meet at a multi-critical line in the parameter space of anyonic angle $\theta$, onsite interaction $U$, and nearest neighbor repulsion $V$. Superfluid and pair-superfluid phases are stable in a region of small $V$.

Competition between dimerization and vector chirality in the spin-$3/2$ $J_1$-$J_2$ Heisenberg chain with uniaxial single-ion anisotropy

The spin-$3/2$ chain is a versatile prototypical platform for the study of competition between different kinds of magnetic orders, with the objective of obtaining a deeper understanding of the corresponding quantum phase transitions. In this work, we investigate the spin-$3/2$ chain with nearest-neighbor $J_1$, next-nearest-neighbor $J_2$, and uniaxial single-ion anisotropy $D$ terms in the absence of a magnetic field. For positive values of $J_2/J_1$ and $D/J_1$, we find seven different phases in a rich phase diagram. Without frustration $J_2=0$, a gapless Luttinger liquid phase remains stable for all $D>0$. As $J_2$ increases, we observe three phases with distinct dimerized valence bond orders, which show an intricate competition with vector chiral order and incommensurate correlations. For large $J_2$, regions of phase coexistence between the dimerized and vector chiral orders emerge. We present large-scale numerical data for the determination of transition lines, order parameters, and the nature of the phase transitions.

Dissipative Dicke time crystals: an atoms' point of view

We develop and study an atom-only description of the Dicke model with time-periodic couplings between atoms and a dissipative cavity mode. The cavity mode is eliminated giving rise to effective atom-atom interactions and dissipation. We use this effective description to analyze the dynamics of the atoms that undergo a transition to a dynamical superradiant phase with macroscopic coherences in the atomic medium and the light field. Using Floquet theory in combination with the atom-only description we provide a precise determination of the phase boundaries and of the dynamical response of the atoms. From this we can predict the existence of dissipative time crystals that show a subharmonic response with respect to the driving frequency. We show that the atom-only theory can describe the relaxation into such a dissipative time crystal and that the damping rate can be understood in terms of a cooling mechanism.

Nonlinear effects on charge fractionalization in critical chains

We investigate the generic transport in a one-dimensional strongly correlated fermionic chain beyond linear response. Starting from a Gaussian wave packet with positive momentum on top of the ground state, we find that the numerical time evolution splits the signal into at least three distinct fractional charges moving with different velocities. A fractional left-moving charge is expected from conventional Luttinger liquid theory, but for the prediction of the two separate right-moving packets the nonlinearity of the dispersion must also be taken into account. This out-of-equilibrium protocol therefore allows a direct measurement of nonlinear interaction parameters, which also govern threshold singularities of dynamic response functions. The nonlinear Luttinger Liquid theory also predicts the correct dynamics at low energies, where it agrees with the conventional Luttinger liquid. Moreover, at high energies, the wave packet dynamics reveals signatures of composite excitations containing two-particle bound states. Our results uncover a simple strategy to probe the nonlinear regime in time-resolved experiments in quantum wires and ultracold-atom platforms.

Speeding Up Squeezing with a Periodically Driven Dicke Model

We present a simple and effective method to create highly entangled spin states on a faster timescale than that of the commonly employed one-axis twisting (OAT) model. We demonstrate that by periodically driving the Dicke Hamiltonian at a resonance frequency, the system effectively becomes a two-axis countertwisting Hamiltonian which is known to quickly create Heisenberg limit scaled entangled states. For these states we show that simple quadrature measurements can saturate the ultimate precision limit for parameter estimation determined by the quantum Cramér-Rao bound. An example experimental realization of the periodically driven scheme is discussed with the potential to quickly generate momentum entanglement in a recently described experimental vertical cavity system. We analyze effects of collective dissipation in this vertical cavity system and find that our squeezing protocol can be more robust than the previous realization of OAT.

Coherence Properties of the Repulsive Anyon-Hubbard Dimer

One-dimensional anyonic models of the Hubbard type show intriguing ground-state properties, effectively transmuting between Bose-Einstein and Fermi-Dirac statistics. The simplest model that one can investigate is an anyonic version of the bosonic Josephson junction, the repulsive anyon-Hubbard dimer. In the following we find an exact duality relation to the Bethe-solvable Bose-Hubbard dimer, which is well known from quantum optics and information theory and has interesting connections to spin squeezing and entangled coherent states. Conversely, we show that the anyonic Hubbard dimer has nontrivial coherence properties that emerge from the anyonic statistics. In particular, we find that coherences can be suppressed and amplified and show that these features are remarkably robust against additional repulsive on-site interactions highlighting the distinct nature of anyons.

Momentum resolved Floquet-engineered pair and single particle filter in the Fermi Hubbard model

We investigate the transport properties of a Fermi-Hubbard chain with an impurity which is formed by a site with a periodically modulated chemical potential. We determine the momentum resolved transmission through this impurity in dependence of the modulation frequency and strength for a single particle and a pair of fermions. We find that the pair transmission has a very distinct behaviour from the single particle transmission. Different situations can occur, where only the single particle or the pair with a certain momentum are transmitted or filtered out.

Boundary logarithmic corrections to the dynamical correlation functions of one-dimensional spin-1/2 chains

The asymptotic dynamical correlation functions in one-dimensional spin chains are described by power-laws. The corresponding exponents characterize different bulk and boundary critical behavior. We present novel results for the logarithmic contribution to the boundary correlations of an isotropic Heisenberg chain. The exponent of the logarithm, $λ=1$, is derived using a renormalization group technique. We confirm our analytical results by comparing with numerical quantum Monte Carlo data.

Floquet-engineered pair and single particle filter in the Fermi Hubbard model

We investigate the Fermi-Hubbard model with a Floquet-driven impurity in the form of a local time-oscillating potential. For strong attractive interactions a stable formation of pairs is observed. These pairs show a completely different transmission behavior than the transmission that is observed for the single unpaired particles. Whereas in the high frequency limit the single particles show a maximum of the transition at low driving amplitudes, the pairs display a pronounced maximum transmission when the amplitude of the driving lies close to the ratio of the interaction U and the driving frequency ω. We use the distinct transmission behaviour to design filters for pairs or single particles, respectively. For example one can totally block the transmission of single particles through the driven impurity and allow only for the transmission of pairs. We quantify the quality of the designed filters.

Dissipation engineered directional filter for quantum ratchets

We demonstrate transport rectification in a hermitian Hamiltonian quantum ratchet by a dissipative, dynamic impurity. While the bulk of the ratchet supports transport in both directions, the properly designed loss function of the local impurity acts as a direction-dependent filter for the moving states. We analyse this scheme theoretically by making use of Floquet-S-Matrix theory. In addition, we provide the direct experimental observation of one-way transmittance in periodically modulated plasmonic waveguide arrays containing a local impurity with engineered losses.

Local spin transfer torque and magnetoresistance in domain walls with variable width

Use of a spin polarized current for the manipulation of magnetic domain walls in ferromagnetic nanowires has been the subject of intensive research for many years. Recently, due to technological advancements, creating nano-contacts with special characteristics is becoming more and more prevalent. We now present a full quantum investigation of the magnetoresistance and the spin transfer torque in a domain wall, which is embedded in a nano-contact of Ni$_{80}$Fe$_ {20}$, where the size of the domain wall becomes a relevant tunable parameter. The dependence on the domain wall width as well as the spatial dependence of the torque along the domain wall can be analyzed in complete detail. The magnetoresistance drops with increasing domain wall width as expected, but also shows characteristic modulations and points of resonant spin-flip transmission. The spin transfer torque has both significant in-plane and out-of-plane contributions even without considering relaxation. A closer inspection identifies contributions from the misalignment of the spin density for short domain walls as well as an effective gauge field for longer domain walls, both of which oscillate along the domain wall.

Floquet-Induced Superfluidity with Periodically Modulated Interactions of Two-Species Hardcore Bosons in a One-dimensional Optical Lattice

We consider two species of hard-core bosons with density dependent hopping in a one-dimensional optical lattice, for which we propose experimental realizations using time-periodic driving. The quantum phase diagram for half-integer filling is determined by combining different advanced numerical simulations with analytic calculations. We find that a reduction of the density-dependent hopping induces a Mott-insulator to superfluid transition. For negative hopping a previously unknown state is found, where one species induces a gauge phase of the other species, which leads to a superfluid phase of gauge-paired particles. The corresponding experimental signatures are discussed.

Dirac Spin Liquid on the Spin-1/2 Triangular Heisenberg Antiferromagnet

We study the spin liquid candidate of the spin-$1/2$ $J_1$-$J_2$ Heisenberg antiferromagnet on the triangular lattice by means of density matrix renormalization group (DMRG) simulations. By applying an external Aharonov-Bohm flux insertion in an infinitely long cylinder, we find unambiguous evidence for gapless $U(1)$ Dirac spin liquid behavior. The flux insertion overcomes the finite size restriction for energy gaps and clearly shows gapless behavior at the expected wave-vectors. Using the DMRG transfer matrix, the low-lying excitation spectrum can be extracted, which shows characteristic Dirac cone structures of both spinon-bilinear and monopole excitations. Finally, we confirm that the entanglement entropy follows the predicted universal response under the flux insertion.
