Static impurities in a supersolid of interacting hard-core bosons on a triangular lattice

We study the effect of impurities in a supersolid phase in comparison to the behavior in the solid and superfluid phases. A supersolid phase has been established for interacting hardcore bosons on a triangular lattice which may be realizable by ultracold atomic gases. Static vacancies are considered in this model which always lower the magnitude of the order parameter in the solid or superfluid phases. In the supersolid phase, however, the impurities directly affect both order parameters simultaneously and thereby reveal an interesting interplay between them. In particular the solid order may be enhanced at the cost of a strong reduction of the superfluidity, which shows that the two order parameters cannot be in a simple superposition. We also observe an unusual impurity pinning effect in the solid ordered phase, which results in two distinct states separated by a first-order transition.

Spin wave calculation of the field-dependent magnetization pattern around an impurity in Heisenberg antiferromagnets

We consider the magnetic-field dependent spatial magnetization pattern around a general impurity embedded in a Heisenberg antiferromagnet using both an analytical and a numerical spin wave approach. The results are compared to quantum Monte Carlo simulations. The decay of the magnetization pattern away from the impurity follows a universal form which reflects the properties of the pure antiferromagnetic Heisenberg model. Only the overall magnitude of the induced magnetization depends also on the size of the impurity spin and the impurity coupling.

Dynamics and decoherence in the central spin model using exact methods

The dynamics and decoherence of an electronic spin-1/2 qubit coupled to a bath of nuclear spins via hyperfine interactions in a quantum dot is studied. We show how exact results from the integrable solution can be used to understand the dynamic behavior of the qubit. It is possible to predict the main frequency contributions and their broadening for relatively general initial states analytically, leading to an estimate of the corresponding decay times. Furthermore, for a small bath polarization, a new low-frequency time scale is observed.

Non-Collinear Ferromagnetic Luttinger Liquids

The presence of electron-electron interactions in one dimension profoundly changes the properties of a system. The separation of charge and spin degrees of freedom is just one example. We consider what happens when a system consisting of a ferromagnetic region of non-collinearity, i.e. a domain wall, is coupled to interacting electrons in one-dimension (more specifically a Luttinger liquid). The ferromagnetism breaks spin charge separation and the presence of the domain wall introduces a spin dependent scatterer into the problem. The absence of spin charge separation and the effects of the electron correlations results in very different behaviour for the excitations in the system and for spin-transfer-torque effects in this model.

Recursive Method for the Density of States in One Dimension

We derive a powerful yet simple method for analyzing the local density of states in gapless one dimensional fermionic systems, including extensions such as momentum dependent interaction parameters and hard-wall boundaries. We study the crossover of the local DOS from individual density waves to the well-known asymptotic powerlaws and identify characteristic signs of spin charge separation in possible STM experiments. For semi-infinite systems a closed analytic expression is found in terms of hypergeometric functions.

Spectrum and Screening cloud in the central spin model

We consider an electronic spin in a quantum dot, coupled to the surrounding nuclear spins via inhomogeneous antiferromagnetic hyperfine interactions and subject to a uniform field, which is described by Gaudin's central spin model. We study spectral properties, the two-point correlation functions, and the magnetization profile in the ground state and in low-lying excited states, which characterizes the structure of the cloud of nuclear spins screening the electron spin. A close connection to the pair occupation probability in the BCS-model is established. Using the exact Bethe Ansatz solution of that model and arguments of integrability, we can distinguish between contributions from purely classical physics and from quantum fluctuations.

One-dimensional quantum wires: A pedestrian approach to bosonization

In these lecture notes we will consider systems in which the motion of electrons is confined to one dimension (1D). In these so-called quantum wires electron-electron interaction effects play an important role because the restricted dimensions enhance the scattering between the electrons and completely destroy the quasi-particle picture. New density wave excitations appear that are described by bosonic operators. Here, we will develop this bosonic description, following a pedestrian approach which does not require any previous knowledge in field theory methods. These notes therefore serve as a detailed introduction into bosonization by carefully deriving the most fundamental formulas.

Lattice defects and boundaries in conducting carbon nanotubes

We consider the effect of various defects and boundary structures on the low energy electronic properties in conducting zigzag and armchair carbon nanotubes. The tight binding model of the conduction bands is mapped exactly onto simple lattice models consisting of two uncoupled parallel chains. Imperfections such as impurities, structural defects or caps can be easily included into the effective lattice models, allowing a detailed physical interpretation of their consequences. The method is quite general and can be used to study a wide range of possible imperfections in carbon nanotubes. We obtain the electron density patterns expected from a scanning tunneling microscopy experiment for half fullerene caps and two typical impurities in the bulk of a tube, namely the Stone-Wales defect and a single vacancy.

Lattice vs. continuum theory of the periodic Heisenberg chain

We consider the detailed structure of low energy excitations in the periodic spin-1/2 XXZ Heisenberg chain. By performing a perturbative calculation of the non-linear corrections to the Gaussian model, we determine the exact coefficients of asymptotic expansions in inverse powers of the system length N for a large number of low-lying excited energy levels. This allows us to calculate eigenenergies of the lattice model up to order order N^-4, without having to solve the Bethe Ansatz equations. At the same time, it is possible to express the exact eigenstates of the lattice model in terms of bosonic modes.

Attractively bound pairs of atoms in the Bose-Hubbard model and antiferromagnetism

We consider a periodic lattice loaded with pairs of bosonic atoms tightly bound to each other via strong attractive on-site interaction that exceeds the inter-site tunneling rate. An ensemble of such lattice-dimers is accurately described by an effective Hamiltonian of hard core bosons with strong nearest-neighbor repulsion which is equivalent to the $XXZ$ model with Ising-like anisotropy. We calculate the ground-state phase diagram for a one-dimensional system which exhibits incompressible phases, corresponding to an empty and a fully filled lattice (ferromagnetic phases) and a half-filled alternating density crystal (anti-ferromagnetic phase), separated from each other by compressible phases. In a finite lattice the compressible phases show characteristic oscillatory modulations on top of the anti-ferromagnetic density profile and in density-density correlations. We derive a kink model which provides simple quantitative explanation of these features. To describe the long-range correlations of the system we employ the Luttinger liquid theory with the relevant Luttinger parameter $K$ obtained exactly using the Bethe Ansatz solution. We calculate the density-density as well as first-order correlations and find excellent agreement with numerical results obtained with density matrix renormalization group (DMRG) methods. We also present a perturbative treatment of the system in higher dimensions.

Local Density of States for Individual Energy Levels in Finite Quantum Wires

The local density of states (LDOS) in finite quantum wires is calculated as a function of discrete energies and position along the wire. By using a combination of numerical density matrix renormalization group (DMRG) calculations and analytical bosonization techniques it is possible to obtain a good understanding of the local spectral weights along the wire in terms of the underlying many-body excitations.

Highest weight state description of the isotropic spin-1 chain

We introduce an overcomplete highest weight state basis as a calculational tool for the description of the isotropic spin-1 chain with bilinear exchange coupling J1 and biquadratic coupling J2. The ground state can be expressed exactly at the three special points in the phase diagram where the Hamiltonian corresponds to a sum of nearest neighbor total spin projection operators (J1=0>J2, J1=-J2<0, and J1=-J2/3<0). In particular, at the phase transition point J1=-J2<0 it is possible to exactly compute the ground states, excited states, expectation values, and correlation functions by using the new total spin basis.

Universal alternating order around impurities in antiferromagnets

The study of impurities in antiferromagnets is of considerable interest in condensed matter physics. In this paper we address the elementary question of the effect of vacancies on the orientation of the surrounding magnetic moments in an antiferromagnet. In the presence of a magnetic field, alternating magnetic moments are induced, which can be described by a universal expression that is valid in any ordered antiferromagnet and turns out to be independent of temperature over a large range. The universality is not destroyed by quantum fluctuation, which is demonstrated by quantum Monte Carlo simulations in the two-dimensional Heisenberg antiferromagnet. Physical predictions for finite doping are made, which are relevant for experiments probing Knight shifts and the order parameter.

Local Spectral Weight of a Luttinger Liquid: Effects from Edges and Impurities

We calculate the finite-temperature local spectral weight (LSW) of a Luttinger liquid with an "open" (hard wall) boundary. Close to the boundary the LSW exhibits characteristic oscillations indicative of spin-charge separation. The line shape of the LSW is also found to have a Fano-like asymmetry, a feature originating from the interplay between electron-electron interaction and scattering off the boundary. Our results can be used to predict how edges and impurities influence scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) of one-dimensional electron systems at low temperatures and voltage bias. Applications to STM on single-walled carbon nanotubes are discussed.

Doping effects in low dimensional antiferromagnets

The study of impurities in low dimensional antiferromagnets has been a very active field in magnetism ever since the discovery of high temperature superconductivity. One of the most dramatic effects is the appearance of large Knight shifts in a long range around non-magnetic impurities in an antiferromagnetic background. The dependence of the Knight shifts on distance and temperature visualizes the correlations in the system. In this work we present the results for Knight shifts around a single vacancy in the one and two dimensional Heisenberg model.

Interaction effects between impurities in low dimensional spin-1/2 antiferromagnets

We are considering the interplay between several non-magnetic impurities in the spin-1/2 Heisenberg antiferromagnet in chains, ladders and planes by introducing static vacancies in numerical quantum Monte Carlo simulations. The effective potential between two and more impurities is accurately determined, which gives a direct measure of the quantum correlations in the systems. Large effective interaction potentials are an indication of strong quantum correlations in the system and reflect the detailed nature of the valence bond ground states. In two-dimensions (2D) the interactions are smaller, but can still be analyzed in terms of valence bonds.

Knight shifts around vacancies in the 2D Heisenberg model

The local response to a uniform field around vacancies in the two-dimensional (2D) spin-1/2 Heisenberg antiferromagnet is determined by numerical quantum Monte Carlo simulations as a function of temperature. It is possible to separate the Knight shifts into uniform and staggered contributions on the lattice which are analyzed and understood in detail. The contributions show interesting long and short range behavior that may be of relevance in NMR and susceptibility measurements. For more than one impurity remarkable non-linear enhancement and cancellation effects take place. We predict that the Curie impurity susceptibility will be observable for a random impurity concentration even in the thermodynamic limit.

Magnetic order and moment distribution in doped spin-chain systems

We consider the effect of doping on the magnetic order in quasi one-dimensional (1D) antiferromagnets. First the detailed magnetic response of finite spin-1/2 chains in the presence of a staggered field is determined, which by itself shows an interesting crossover as function of length and field strength. We can then understand the ordering by including an effective coupling between the chains, which results in a Neel ordered phase at low temperatures, but with a broad distribution of magnetic moments that has to be determined self-consistently.
