Real holomorphic sections of the Deligne-Hitchin twistor space

We study the holomorphic sections of the Deligne-Hitchin moduli space of a compact Riemann surface that are invariant under the natural anti-holomorphic involutions of the moduli space. Their relationships with the harmonic maps are established. As a bi-product, a question of Simpson on such sections, posed in \cite{Si2}, is answered.

Branes through finite group actions

Mid-dimensional $(A,B,A)$ and $(B,B,B)$-branes in the moduli space of flat $G_{\mathbb C}$-connections appearing from finite group actions on compact Riemann surfaces are studied. The geometry and topology of these spaces is then described via the corresponding Higgs bundles and Hitchin fibrations.

Navigating the Space of Symmetric CMC Surfaces

In this paper we introduce a flow on the spectral data for symmetric CMC surfaces in the $3$-sphere. The flow is designed in such a way that it changes the topology but fixes the intrinsic (metric) and certain extrinsic (periods) closing conditions of the CMC surfaces. For rational times we obtain closed (possibly branched) connected CMC surfaces of higher genus. We prove the short time existence of this flow near the spectral data of (a class of) CMC tori. In particular we prove that flowing the spectral data for the Clifford torus is equivalent to the flow of Plateau solutions by varying the angle of the fundamental piece in Lawson's construction for the minimal surfaces $ξ_{g,1}.$

On the Automorphisms of a Rank One Deligne-Hitchin Moduli Space

Let $X$ be a compact connected Riemann surface of genus $g \geq 2$, and let ${\mathcal M}_{\rm DH}$ be the rank one Deligne-Hitchin moduli space associated to $X$. It is known that ${\mathcal M}_{\rm DH}$ is the twistor space for the hyper-Kähler structure on the moduli space of rank one holomorphic connections on $X$. We investigate the group $\operatorname{Aut}({\mathcal M}_{\rm DH})$ of all holomorphic automorphisms of ${\mathcal M}_{\rm DH}$. The connected component of $\operatorname{Aut}({\mathcal M}_{\rm DH})$ containing the identity automorphism is computed. There is a natural element of $H^2({\mathcal M}_{\rm DH}, {\mathbb Z})$. We also compute the subgroup of $\operatorname{Aut}({\mathcal M}_{\rm DH})$ that fixes this second cohomology class. Since ${\mathcal M}_{\rm DH}$ admits an ample rational curve, the notion of algebraic dimension extends to it by a theorem of Verbitsky. We prove that ${\mathcal M}_{\rm DH}$ is Moishezon.

Exploring the space of compact symmetric CMC surfaces

We map out the moduli space of Lawson symmetric constant mean curvature surfaces in the 3-sphere of genus $g>1$ by flowing numerically from Delaunay tori with even lobe count via the generalized Whitham flow.

The asymptotic behavior of the monodromy representations of the associated families of compact CMC surfaces

Constant mean curvature (CMC) surfaces in space forms can be described by their associated $\mathbb C^*$-family of flat $SL(2,\mathbb C)$-connections $\nabla^λ$. In this paper we consider the asymptotic behavior (for $λ\to0$) of the gauge equivalence classes of $\nabla^λ$ for compact CMC surfaces of genus $g\geq2.$ We prove (under the assumption of simple umbilics) that the asymptotic behavior of the traces of the monodromy representation of $\nabla^λ$ determines the conformal type as well as the Hopf differential locally in the Teichmüller space.

Abelianization of Fuchsian Systems on a 4-punctured sphere and applications

In this paper we consider special linear Fuchsian systems of rank $2$ on a $4-$punctured sphere and the corresponding parabolic structures. Through an explicit abelianization procedure we obtain a $2-$to$-1$ correspondence between flat line bundle connections on a torus and these Fuchsian systems. This naturally equips the moduli space of flat $SL(2,\mathbb C)-$connections on a $4-$punctured sphere with a new set of Darboux coordinates. Furthermore, we apply our theory to give a complex analytic proof of Witten's formula for the symplectic volume of the moduli space of unitary flat connections on the $4-$punctured sphere.

The spectral curve theory for $(k,l)-$symmetric CMC surfaces

Constant mean curvature surfaces in $S^3$ can be studied via their associated family of flat connections. In the case of tori this approach has led to a deep understanding of the moduli space of all CMC tori. For compact CMC surfaces of higher genus the theory is far more involved due to the non abelian nature of their fundamental group. In this paper we extend the spectral curve theory for tori developed in \cite{Hi, PiSt} and for genus $2$ surfaces \cite{He3} to CMC surfaces in $S^3$ of genus $g=k\cdot l$ with commuting $\mathbb Z_{k+1}$ and $\mathbb Z_{l+1}$ symmetries. We determine their associated family of flat connections via certain flat line bundle connections parametrized by the spectral curve. We generalize the flow on spectral data introduced in \cite{HeHeSch} and prove the short time existence of this flow for certain families of initial surfaces. In this way we obtain various families of new CMC surfaces of higher genus with prescribed branch points and prescribed umbilics.

Conformal Fibrations of $S^3$ by Circles

It is shown that analytic conformal submersions of $S^3$ are given by intersections of (not necessary closed) complex surfaces with a quadratic real hyper-surface in $\mathbb{C}P^3.$ A new description of the space of circles in the 3-sphere in terms of a natural bilinear form on the tangent sphere bundle of $S^3$ is given. As an application it is shown that every conformal fibration of $S^3$ by circles is the Hopf fibration up to conformal transformations.

A spectral curve approach to Lawson symmetric CMC surfaces of genus 2

Minimal and CMC surfaces in $S^3$ can be treated via their associated family of flat $\SL(2,\C)$-connections. In this the paper we parametrize the moduli space of flat $\SL(2,\C)$-connections on the Lawson minimal surface of genus 2 which are equivariant with respect to certain symmetries of Lawson's geometric construction. The parametrization uses Hitchin's abelianization procedure to write such connections explicitly in terms of flat line bundles on a complex 1-dimensional torus. This description is used to develop a spectral curve theory for the Lawson surface. This theory applies as well to other CMC and minimal surfaces with the same holomorphic symmetries as the Lawson surface but different Riemann surface structure. Additionally, we study the space of isospectral deformations of compact minimal surface of genus $g\geq2$ and prove that it is generated by simple factor dressing.

Lawson's genus two minimal surface and meromorphic connections

We investigate the Lawson genus $2$ surface by methods from integrable system theory. We prove that the associated family of flat connections comes from a family of flat connections on a $4-$punctured sphere. We describe the symmetries of the holonomy and show that it is already determined by the holonomy around one of the punctures. We show the existence of a meromorphic DPW potential for the Lawson surface which is globally defined on the surface. We determine this potential explicitly up to two unknown functions depending only on the spectral parameter.

Higher genus minimal surfaces in $S^3$ and stable bundles

We consider compact minimal surfaces $f\colon M\to S^3$ of genus 2 which are homotopic to an embedding. We assume that the associated holomorphic bundle is stable. We prove that these surfaces can be constructed from a globally defined family of meromorphic connections by the DPW method. The poles of the meromorphic connections are at the Weierstrass points of the Riemann surface of order at most 2. For the existence proof of the DPW potential we give a characterization of stable extensions $0\to S^{-1}\to V\to S\to 0$ of spin bundles $S$ by its dual $S^{-1}$ in terms of an associated element of $P H^0(M;K^2).$ We also consider the family of holomorphic structures associated to a minimal surface in $S^3.$ For surfaces of genus $g\geq2$ the holonomy of the connections is generically non-abelian and therefore the holomorphic structures are generically stable.

Harmonic morphisms on conformally flat 3-spheres

We show that under some non-degeneracy assumption the only submersive harmonic morphism on a conformally flat $3-$sphere is the Hopf fibration. The proof involves an appropriate use the Chern-Simons functional.
