The Gross-Pitaevskii hierarchy on general rectangular tori

In this work, we study the Gross-Pitaevskii hierarchy on general --rational and irrational-- rectangular tori of dimension two and three. This is a system of infinitely many linear partial differential equations which arises in the rigorous derivation of the nonlinear Schrödinger equation. We prove a conditional uniqueness result for the hierarchy. In two dimensions, this result allows us to obtain a rigorous derivation of the defocusing cubic nonlinear Schrödinger equation from the dynamics of many-body quantum systems. On irrational tori, this question was posed as an open problem in previous work of Kirkpatrick, Schlein, and Staffilani.

The cubic Dirac equation: Small initial data in $H^1(\mathbb{R}^3)$

We establish global well-posedness and scattering for the cubic Dirac equation for small data in the critical space $H^1(\mathbb{R}^3)$. The main ingredient is obtaining a sharp end-point Strichartz estimate for the Klein-Gordon equation. In a classical sense this fails and it is related to the failure of the endpoint Strichartz estimate for the wave equation in space dimension three. In this paper, systems of coordinate frames are constructed in which endpoint Strichartz estimates are recovered and energy estimates are established.

The energy-critical nonlinear Schrödinger equation on a product of spheres

Let $(M,g)$ be a compact smooth $3$-dimensional Riemannian manifold without boundary. It is proved that the energy-critical nonlinear Schrödinger equation is globally well-posed for small initial data in $H^1(M)$, provided that a certain tri-linear estimate for free solutions holds true. This estimate is known to hold true on the sphere and tori in $3d$ and verified here in the case $\mathbb{S}\times\mathbb{S}^2$. The necessity of a weak form of this tri-linear estimate is also discussed.

The Boson star equation with initial data of low regularity

The Cauchy problem for the L^2-critical boson star equation with initial data of low regularity in spatial dimension d=3 is studied. Local well-posedness in H^s for s > 1/4 is proved. Moreover, for radial initial data, local well-posedness is established in H^s for s > 0. Both results are shown to be almost optimal by providing complementary ill-posedness results.

The quintic nonlinear Schrödinger equation on three-dimensional Zoll manifolds

Let (M,g) be a three-dimensional smooth compact Riemannian manifold such that all geodesics are simple and closed with a common minimal period, such as the 3-sphere S^3 with canonical metric. In this work the global well-posedness problem for the quintic nonlinear Schrödinger equation i\partial_t u+Δu=\pm|u|^4u, u|_{t=0}=u_0 is solved for small initial data u_0 in the energy space H^1(M), which is the scaling-critical space. Further, local well-posedness for large data, as well as persistence of higher initial Sobolev regularity is obtained. This extends previous results of Burq-Gérard-Tzvetkov to the endpoint case.

Global well-posedness of the energy critical Nonlinear Schrödinger equation with small initial data in H^1(T^3)

A refined trilinear Strichartz estimate for solutions to the Schrödinger equation on the flat rational torus T^3 is derived. By a suitable modification of critical function space theory this is applied to prove a small data global well-posedness result for the quintic Nonlinear Schrödinger Equation in H^s(T^3) for all s \geq 1. This is the first energy-critical global well-posedness result in the setting of compact manifolds.

Strichartz estimates for partially periodic solutions to Schrödinger equations in 4d and applications

We consider the energy critical nonlinear Schrödinger equation on periodic domains of the form R^m x T^{4-m} with m=0,1,2,3. Assuming that a certain L^4 Strichartz estimate holds for solutions to the corresponding linear Schrödinger equation, we prove that the nonlinear problem is locally well-posed in the energy space. Then we verify that the L^4 estimate holds if m=2,3, leaving open the cases m=0,1.

Convolutions of singular measures and applications to the Zakharov system

Uniform L^2-estimates for the convolution of singular measures with respect to transversal submanifolds are proved in arbitrary space dimension. The results of Bennett-Bez are used to extend previous work of Bejenaru-Herr-Tataru. As an application, it is shown that the 3D Zakharov system is locally well-posed in the full subcritical regime.

Strichartz estimates for the Schrödinger equation on polygonal domains

We prove Strichartz estimates with a loss of derivatives for the Schrödinger equation on polygonal domains with either Dirichlet or Neumann homogeneous boundary conditions. Using a standard doubling procedure, estimates the on polygon follow from those on Euclidean surfaces with conical singularities. We develop a Littlewood-Paley squarefunction estimate with respect to the spectrum of the Laplacian on these spaces. This allows us to reduce matters to proving estimates at each frequency scale. The problem can be localized in space provided the time intervals are sufficiently small. Strichartz estimates then follow from a result of the second author regarding the Schrödinger equation on the Euclidean cone.

Well-posedness and scattering for the KP-II equation in a critical space

The Cauchy problem for the Kadomtsev-Petviashvili-II equation (u_t+u_{xxx}+uu_x)_x+u_{yy}=0 is considered. A small data global well-posedness and scattering result in the scale invariant, non-isotropic, homogeneous Sobolev space \dot H^{-1/2,0}(R^2) is derived. Additionally, it is proved that for arbitrarily large initial data the Cauchy problem is locally well-posed in the homogeneous space \dot H^{-1/2,0}(R^2) and in the inhomogeneous space H^{-1/2,0}(R^2), respectively.

A para-differential renormalization technique for nonlinear dispersive equations

For α\in (1,2) we prove that the initial-value problem \partial_t u+D^α\partial_x u+\partial_x(u^2/2)=0 on \mathbb{R}_x\times\mathbb{R}_t; u(0)=ϕ, is globally well-posed in the space of real-valued L^2-functions. We use a frequency dependent renormalization method to control the strong low-high frequency interactions.

A convolution estimate for two-dimensional hypersurfaces

Given three transversal and sufficiently regular hypersurfaces in R^3 it follows from work of Bennett-Carbery-Wright that the convolution of two L^2 functions supported of the first and second hypersurface, respectively, can be restricted to an L^2 function on the third hypersurface, which can be considered as a nonlinear version of the Loomis-Whitney inequality. We generalize this result to a class of C^{1,beta} hypersurfaces in R^3, under scaleable assumptions. The resulting uniform L^2 estimate has applications to nonlinear dispersive equations.

On the 2d Zakharov system with L^2 Schrödinger data

We prove local in time well-posedness for the Zakharov system in two space dimensions with large initial data in L^2 x H^{-1/2} x H^{-3/2}. This is the space of optimal regularity in the sense that the data-to-solution map fails to be smooth at the origin for any rougher pair of spaces in the L^2-based Sobolev scale. Moreover, it is a natural space for the Cauchy problem in view of the subsonic limit equation, namely the focusing cubic nonlinear Schroedinger equation. The existence time we obtain depends only upon the corresponding norms of the initial data - a result which is false for the cubic nonlinear Schroedinger equation in dimension two - and it is optimal because Glangetas-Merle's solutions blow up at that time.
