What Do You See in this Patient? Behavioral Testing of Clinical NLP Models

Decision support systems based on clinical notes have the potential to improve patient care by pointing doctors towards overseen risks. Predicting a patient's outcome is an essential part of such systems, for which the use of deep neural networks has shown promising results. However, the patterns learned by these networks are mostly opaque and previous work revealed flaws regarding the reproduction of unintended biases. We thus introduce an extendable testing framework that evaluates the behavior of clinical outcome models regarding changes of the input. The framework helps to understand learned patterns and their influence on model decisions. In this work, we apply it to analyse the change in behavior with regard to the patient characteristics gender, age and ethnicity. Our evaluation of three current clinical NLP models demonstrates the concrete effects of these characteristics on the models' decisions. They show that model behavior varies drastically even when fine-tuned on the same data and that allegedly best-performing models have not always learned the most medically plausible patterns.

Inventory Management for High-Frequency Trading with Imperfect Competition

We study Nash equilibria for inventory-averse high-frequency traders (HFTs), who trade to exploit information about future price changes. For discrete trading rounds, the HFTs' optimal trading strategies and their equilibrium price impact are described by a system of nonlinear equations; explicit solutions obtain around the continuous-time limit. Unlike in the risk-neutral case, the optimal inventories become mean-reverting and vanish as the number of trading rounds becomes large. In contrast, the HFTs' risk-adjusted profits and the equilibrium price impact converge to their risk-neutral counterparts. Compared to a social-planner solution for cooperative HFTs, Nash competition leads to excess trading, so that marginal transaction taxes in fact decrease market liquidity.

Strict Local Martingales and Optimal Investment in a Black-Scholes Model with a Bubble

There are two major streams of literature on the modeling of financial bubbles: the strict local martingale framework and the Johansen-Ledoit-Sornette (JLS) financial bubble model. Based on a class of models that embeds the JLS model and can exhibit strict local martingale behavior, we clarify the connection between these previously disconnected approaches. While the original JLS model is never a strict local martingale, there are relaxations which can be strict local martingales and which preserve the key assumption of a log-periodic power law for the hazard rate of the time of the crash. We then study the optimal investment problem for an investor with constant relative risk aversion in this model. We show that for positive instantaneous expected returns, investors with relative risk aversion above one always ride the bubble.

Robust Pricing and Hedging around the Globe

We consider the martingale optimal transport duality for c\`adl\`ag processes with given initial and terminal laws. Strong duality and existence of dual optimizers (robust semi-static superhedging strategies) are proved for a class of payoffs that includes American, Asian, Bermudan, and European options with intermediate maturity. We exhibit an optimal superhedging strategy for which the static part solves an auxiliary problem and the dynamic part is given explicitly in terms of the static part.

Model Uncertainty, Recalibration, and the Emergence of Delta-Vega Hedging

We study option pricing and hedging with uncertainty about a Black-Scholes reference model which is dynamically recalibrated to the market price of a liquidly traded vanilla option. For dynamic trading in the underlying asset and this vanilla option, delta-vega hedging is asymptotically optimal in the limit for small uncertainty aversion. The corresponding indifference price corrections are determined by the disparity between the vegas, gammas, vannas, and volgas of the non-traded and the liquidly traded options.

Impact of centrality on cooperative processes

The solution of today's complex problems requires the grouping of task forces whose members are usually connected remotely over long physical distances and different time zones. Hence, understanding the effects of imposed communication patterns (i.e., who can communicate with whom) on group performance is important. Here, we use an agent-based model to explore the influence of the betweenness centrality of the nodes on the time the group requires to find the global maxima of NK-fitness landscapes. The agents cooperate by broadcasting messages, informing on their fitness to their neighbors, and use this information to copy the more successful agents in their neighborhood. We find that for easy tasks (smooth landscapes), the topology of the communication network has no effect on the performance of the group, and that the more central nodes are the most likely to find the global maximum first. For difficult tasks (rugged landscapes), however, we find a positive correlation between the variance of the betweenness among the network nodes and the group performance. For these tasks, the performances of individual nodes are strongly influenced by the agents dispositions to cooperate and by the particular realizations of the rugged landscapes.

Minimal Conditions for Implications of Gronwall-Bellman Type

Gronwall-Bellman type inequalities entail the following implication: if a sufficiently integrable function satisfies a certain homogeneous linear integral inequality, then it is nonpositive. We present a minimal (necessary and sufficient) condition on the Borel measure underlying the integrals for this implication to hold. The condition is also a necessary prerequisite for any nontrivial bound on solutions to inhomogeneous linear integral inequalities of Gronwall-Bellman type.

Hedging with Small Uncertainty Aversion

We study the pricing and hedging of derivative securities with uncertainty about the volatility of the underlying asset. Rather than taking all models from a prespecified class equally seriously, we penalise less plausible ones based on their "distance" to a reference local volatility model. In the limit for small uncertainty aversion, this leads to explicit formulas for prices and hedging strategies in terms of the security's cash gamma.

Single Jump Processes and Strict Local Martingales

Many results in stochastic analysis and mathematical finance involve local martingales. However, specific examples of strict local martingales are rare and analytically often rather unhandy. We study local martingales that follow a given deterministic function up to a random time $\gamma$ at which they jump and stay constant afterwards. The (local) martingale properties of these single jump local martingales are characterised in terms of conditions on the input parameters. This classification allows an easy construction of strict local martingales, uniformly integrable martingales that are not in $H^1$, etc. As an application, we provide a construction of a (uniformly integrable) martingale $M$ and a bounded (deterministic) integrand $H$ such that the stochastic integral $H\bullet M$ is a strict local martingale.

Problem Complexity in Parallel Problem Solving

Recent works examine the relationship between the communication structure and the performance of a group in a problem solving task. Some conclude that inefficient communication networks with long paths outperform efficient networks on the long run. Others find no influence of the network topology on group performance. We contribute to this discussion by examining the role of problem complexity. In particular, we study whether and how the complexity of the problem at hand moderates the influence of the communication network on group performance. Results obtained from multi-agent modelling suggest that problem complexity indeed has an influence. We observe an influence of the network only for problems of moderate difficulty. For easier or harder problems, the influence of network topology becomes weaker or irrelevant, which offers a possible explanation for inconsistencies in the literature.
