The Pontryagin Maximum Principle for Training Convolutional Neural Networks

A novel batch sequential quadratic Hamiltonian (bSQH) algorithm for training convolutional neural networks (CNNs) with $L^0$-based regularization is presented. This methodology is based on a discrete-time Pontryagin maximum principle (PMP). It uses forward and backward sweeps together with the layerwise approximate maximization of an augmented Hamiltonian function, where the augmentation parameter is chosen adaptively. A technique for determining this augmentation parameter is proposed, and the loss-reduction and convergence properties of the bSQH algorithm are analysed theoretically and validated numerically. Results of numerical experiments in the context of image classification with a sparsity enforcing $L^0$-based regularizer demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed method in full-batch and mini-batch modes.

Planetary relationships to birth (imputed conception) rates in humans: A signature of cosmic origin?

Planetary effects have been attributed to biological processes without scientific rigor. Some generic invisible slow matter from the dark Universe in the form of streams or clusters with occasional large flux enhancements due to planetary gravitational focusing is the driving idea and the only explanation we have. This work extends previous observations regarding relationships of diagnosed cancer (melanoma), which may provide additional insight into previously unrecognized factors also affecting other biological processes. Biological measurements in vitro and mutation rates are promising.

RESPONSE TO Time Modulations and Amplifications in the Axion Search Experiments

In this short note we argue why the conclusions made by the authors of arXiv:1908.04675, related to arXiv:1805.05184 and in particular arXiv:1602.03666 given therein, are incorrect. Nevertheless, we think that the advocated Anti-Quark Nuggets are good candidates for the dark Universe, and therefore they deserve further attention.

The Sun and its Planets as detectors for invisible matter

Gravitational lensing of invisible streaming matter towards the Sun could be the explanation of the puzzling solar flares and the unexplained solar emission in the EUV. Assuming that this invisible matter has some form of interaction with normal matter and that there exist preferred directions in its flow, then one would expect a more pronounced solar activity at certain planetary heliocentric longitudes. This is best demonstrated in the case of the Earth and the two inner planets. We have analyzed the solar flares as well as the EUV emission. We observe statistically significant signals when one or more planets have heliocentric longitudes mainly between 230o and 300o. We also analyzed daily data of the global ionization degree of the Earth atmosphere. We observe a correlation between the total atmospheric electron content and the orbital position of the inner three planets. Remarkably, the strongest correlation is appearing with the phase of the Moon.
