Beyond Leading Logarithms in $g_V$: The Semileptonic Weak Hamiltonian at $\mathcal{O}(\alpha\,\alpha_s^2)$

We present the first next-to-leading-logarithmic QCD analysis of the electromagnetic corrections to the semileptonic weak Hamiltonian, including the mixed $\mathcal{O}(\alpha\,\alpha_s^2)$ corrections to the vector coupling $g_V$. The analysis combines the evaluation of three-loop anomalous dimensions and two-loop matching corrections with a consistent factorization of short-distance QCD effects. The latter is implemented through a scheme change based on a $d$-dimensional operator product expansion performed inside the loop integrals. The resulting renormalization-group--improved expression for the radiative correction $\Delta^V_R = 2.436(16)\%$ can be systematically refined using input from lattice QCD and perturbation theory and improves the consistency of first-row CKM unitarity tests.

Supporting stylists by recommending fashion style

Outfittery is an online personalized styling service targeted at men. We have hundreds of stylists who create thousands of bespoke outfits for our customers every day. A critical challenge faced by our stylists when creating these outfits is selecting an appropriate item of clothing that makes sense in the context of the outfit being created, otherwise known as style fit. Another significant challenge is knowing if the item is relevant to the customer based on their tastes, physical attributes and price sensitivity. At Outfittery we leverage machine learning extensively and combine it with human domain expertise to tackle these challenges. We do this by surfacing relevant items of clothing during the outfit building process based on what our stylist is doing and what the preferences of our customer are. In this paper we describe one way in which we help our stylists to tackle style fit for a particular item of clothing and its relevance to an outfit. A thorough qualitative and quantitative evaluation highlights the method's ability to recommend fashion items by style fit.

Non-equilibrium condensation and coarsening of field-driven dipolar colloids

In colloidal suspensions, self-organization processes can be easily fueled by external fields. One particularly interesting class of phenomena occurs in monolayers of dipolar particles that are driven by rotating external fields. Here we report results from a computer simulation study of such systems focusing on the clustering behavior also observed in recent experiments. The key result of this paper is a novel interpretation of this pattern formation phenomenon: We show the clustering to be a by-product of a vapor-liquid first order phase transition. In fact, the observed dynamic coarsening process corresponds to the spindodal demixing that occurs during such a transition

Pattern formation of dipolar colloids in rotating fields: Layering and synchronization

We report Brownian dynamics (BD) simulation and theoretical results for a system of spherical colloidal particles with permanent dipole moments in a rotating magnetic field. Performing simulations at a fixed packing fraction and dipole coupling parameter, we construct a full non-equilibrium phase diagram as function of the driving frequency ($ω_0$) and field strength ($B_0$). This diagram contains both synchronized states, where the individual particles follow the field with (on average) constant phase difference, and asynchronous states. The synchronization is accompanied by layer formation, i.e. by spatial symmetry-breaking, similar to systems of induced dipoles in rotating fields. In the permanent-dipole case, however, too large $ω_0$ yield a breakdown of layering, supplemented by complex changes of the single-particle rotational dynamics from synchronous to asynchronous behavior. We show that the limit frequencies $ω_c$ can be well described as a bifurcation in the nonlinear equation of motion of a single particle rotating in a viscous medium. Finally, we present a simple density functional theory, which describes the emergence of layers in perfectly synchronized states as an equilibrium phase transition.
