Results from inclusive and differential measurements of the production cross sections for top quarks in proton-proton collisions at center-of-mass energies of 7 and 8 TeV are compared to predictions at next-to-leading and next-to-next-to-leading order in perturbative Quantum Chromodynamics. From these studies, constraints on the top-quark mass, the strong coupling constant, and on parton distributions functions are determined.
Recent measurements of jet cross sections at HERA, the Tevatron and the LHC that provide constraints on parton distribution functions and allow for determinations of the strong coupling constant are presented.
Higher-order QCD predictions are used to extract the top quark mass, both in the pole and in the $\bar{\mathrm{MS}}$ scheme, from the top quark pair production cross section measured in the dilepton final state. The analysed dataset corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 1.14 fb$^{-1}$ collected by the CMS experiment in 2011 in proton-proton collisions at $\sqrt{s} = 7$ TeV.
