Spontaneous CP Violation and the Strong CP Problem in Left-Right Symmetric Theories

We study spontaneous CP violation as a solution to the strong CP problem in left-right symmetric theories. The discrete CP symmetry is broken by a complex vacuum expectation value of a right-handed Higgs doublet. Heavy vectorlike down-type quarks mix with the Standard Model quarks introducing the known CP violation - realizing a variant of the Nelson-Barr mechanism. A nonvanishing QCD vacuum angle is generated at loop level. The implementation in the ultraviolet complete theory of trinification at low scales is discussed. We further comment on the phenomenology and future testability of the model.

Minimal Radiative Neutrino Masses

We conduct a systematic search for neutrino mass models which only radiatively produce the dimension-5 Weinberg operator. We thereby do not allow for additional symmetries beyond the Standard Model gauge symmetry and we restrict ourselves to minimal models. We also include stable fractionally charged and coloured particles in our search. Additionally, we proof that there is a unique model with three new fermionic representations where no new scalars are required to generate neutrino masses at loop level. This model further has a potential dark matter candidate and introduces a general mechanism for loop-suppression of the neutrino mass via a fermionic ladder

Emerging Internal Symmetries from Effective Spacetimes

Can global internal and spacetime symmetries be connected without supersymmetry? To answer this question, we investigate Minkowski spacetimes with d space-like extra dimensions and point out under which general conditions external symmetries induce internal symmetries in the effective 4-dimensional theories. We further discuss in this context how internal degrees of freedom and spacetime symmetries can mix without supersymmetry in agreement with the Coleman-Mandula theorem. We present some specific examples which rely on a direct product structure of spacetime such that orthogonal extra dimensions can have symmetries which mix with global internal symmetries. This mechanism opens up new opportunities to understand global symmetries in particle physics.

Gravitational Waves as a New Probe of Bose-Einstein Condensate Dark Matter

There exists a class of ultralight Dark Matter (DM) models which could form a Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) in the early universe and behave as a single coherent wave instead of individual particles in galaxies. We show that a generic BEC DM halo intervening along the line of sight of a gravitational wave (GW) signal could induce an observable change in the speed of GW, with the effective refractive index depending only on the mass and self-interaction of the constituent DM particles and the GW frequency. Hence, we propose to use the deviation in the speed of GW as a new probe of the BEC DM parameter space. With a multi-messenger approach to GW astronomy and/or with extended sensitivity to lower GW frequencies, the entire BEC DM parameter space can be effectively probed by our new method in the near future.

Unification and Local Baryon Number

We investigate the possibility to find an ultraviolet completion of the simple extensions of the Standard Model where baryon number is a local symmetry. In the context of such theories one can understand the spontaneous breaking of baryon number at the low scale and the proton stability. We find a simple theory based on SU(4)_C x SU(3)_L x SU(3)_R where baryon number is embedded in a non-Abelian gauge symmetry. We discuss the main features of the theory and the possible implications for experiments. This theory predicts stable colored and/or fractional electric charged fields which can give rise to very exotic signatures at the Large Hadron Collider experiments such as CMS and ATLAS. We further discuss the embedding in a gauge theory based on SU(4)_C x SU(4)_L x SU(4)_R which could define the way to achieve the unification of the gauge interactions at the low scale.

Simple Left-Right Theory: Lepton Number Violation at the LHC

We propose a simple left-right symmetric theory where the neutrino masses are generated at the quantum level. In this context the neutrinos are Majorana fermions and the model has the minimal degrees of freedom in the scalar sector needed for symmetry breaking and mass generation. We discuss the lepton number violating signatures with two charged leptons of different flavor and missing energy at the Large Hadron Collider in order to understand the testability of the theory.

Leptobaryons as Majorana Dark Matter

We explore the dark matter and collider phenomenology of the minimal gauged $U(1)_B$ model, consisting of a leptophobic $Z_B$ gauge boson, and an accompanying Higgs $S_B$. By requirement of anomaly cancellation, the fermion sector naturally contains a dark matter candidate---a Majorana isosinglet $χ$ stabilized by an inherent $Z_2$ symmetry. The absence of evidence for $Z$ prime dijet resonances at the LHC suggests that the scale of symmetry breaking $Λ_{B}\gtrsim 500$ GeV. Saturation of dark matter abundance together with limits on the direct detection cross section (dominated by Higgs exchange) constrains the Higgs mixing angle to $|θ|\lesssim 0.22$. For small mixing angles of $|θ| \lesssim 10^{-3}$, the $\mathcal{O}(10\%)$ branching fractions of the fermion loop-mediated $S_B\rightarrowγγ$, $Zγ$, $ZZ$ modes may provide clues about the fermion content of the model at the LHC.

Minimal Theory for Lepto-Baryons

We investigate the simplest models where baryon and lepton numbers are defined as local symmetries spontaneously broken at the low scale and discuss the implications for cosmology. We define the simplest anomaly-free theory for spontaneous baryon and lepton number violation which predicts the existence of lepto-baryons. In this context we study the new sphaleron condition on the chemical potentials and show the relation between the present baryon asymmetry and the B-L asymmetry generated in the early universe. The properties of the cold dark matter candidate for which stability is a natural consequence from symmetry breaking are briefly discussed.

Low Scale Unification of Gauge Interactions

We investigate the possibility to realize the unification of the Standard Model gauge interactions at the low scale in four dimensions. We find that the fields needed to define a minimal theory where baryon and lepton numbers are local symmetries, allow for unification at the low scale in agreement with experiments. In these scenarios the proton is stable and we briefly discuss the implications for cosmology.
