A Hodge Theoretic Generalization of $\mathbb{Q}$-Homology Manifolds II: Local Complete Intersections

Recently, the authors introduced and studied a singularity invariant of a complex algebraic variety $Z$, written $\HRH(Z)$ (for ``Hodge rational homology'' manifold level). In this paper, we focus on local complete intersection subvarieties. We relate $\HRH(Z)$ to various well-known invariants, like Bernstein--Sato polynomials and the Dimca-Maisonobe-Saito spectrum. In the hypersurface case it turns out that $\HRH(Z)$ can be completely characterized by these invariants, though higher codimension case is more subtle.

Characterization and finite descent of local cohomological invariants

We provide simple ``left-inverse characterizations'' of the recently introduced singularity invariants $c(Z)$, $w(Z)$, and ${\rm HRH}(Z)$ of an equidimensional variety $Z$. Combining this with a trace morphism, we establish descent results of these invariants for finite surjective morphisms.

Hodge theory of secant varieties

We study the local cohomology modules for the secant variety of lines of a smooth projective variety $Y$ and for higher secant varieties of smooth projective curves. We show that the local cohomological defect in the first case is related to the primitive cohomology of $Y$, and in the second case it is $0$. As applications, we compute their (intersection) Hodge-Lyubeznik numbers, the mixed Hodge structure on their singular cohomology, the pure Hodge structure on their intersection cohomology, the generating level of the Hodge filtration on their local cohomology modules and their $\mathbf Q$-factoriality defect. As byproducts, we recover and refine various results from the literature by removing restrictive positivity assumptions.

Partial Cohomologically Complete Intersections via Hodge Theory

Using Saito's theory of mixed Hodge modules, we study a generalization of Hellus-Schenzel's "cohomologically complete intersection" property. This property is equivalent to perversity of the shifted constant sheaf. We relate the generalized version to the Hodge filtration on local cohomology, depth of Du Bois complexes, Hodge-Lyubeznik numbers and prove a striking inequality on the codimension of the non-perverse locus of the shifted constant sheaf. We study the case of cones over projective rational homology manifolds. We study when such varieties satisfy the weakened condition mentioned above as well as the partial Poincar\'{e} duality. To do this, we completely describe their higher local cohomology modules in terms of the Hodge theory of the corresponding projective variety. We apply this to the study of Hodge-Lyubeznik numbers and the intersection cohomology.

A Hodge Theoretic generalization of $\mathbb{Q}$-Homology Manifolds I: General Case

We study a natural Hodge-theoretic generalization of rational (or $\mathbb{Q}$-)homology manifolds through an invariant $\HRH(Z)$ attached to a complex algebraic variety $Z$. The defining property of this notion encodes the difference between higher Du Bois and higher rational singularities for local complete intersections, which are two classes of singularities that have recently gained much attention. We show that $\HRH(Z)$ can be characterized when the variety $Z$ is embedded into a smooth variety using the local cohomology mixed Hodge modules. Near a point, this is also characterized by the local cohomology of $Z$ at the point, and hence, by the cohomology of the link. We give an application to partial Poincar\'{e} duality. We also introduce the generic local cohomological defect ${\rm lcdef}_{\textrm{gen}}(Z)$ and relate it to $\HRH(Z)$. Various examples are discussed at the end.

Restrictions of mixed Hodge modules using generalized V-filtrations

We study generalized $V$-filtrations, defined by Sabbah, on $\mathcal D$-modules underlying mixed Hodge modules on $X\times \mathbf A^r$. Using cyclic covers, we compare these filtrations to the usual $V$-filtration, which is better understood. The main result shows that these filtrations can be used to compute the restriction functors $\sigma^!, \sigma^*$, where $\sigma \colon X \times \{0\} \to X \times \mathbf A^r$ is the inclusion of the zero section. As an application, we use the restriction result to study singularities of complete intersection subvarieties. These filtrations can be used to study the local cohomology mixed Hodge module. In particular, we classify when weighted homogeneous isolated complete intersection singularities in $\mathbf A^n$ are $k$-Du Bois and $k$-rational.

On the local cohomology of secant varieties

Given a sufficiently positive embedding $X\subset\mathbb{P}^N$ of a smooth projective variety $X$, we consider its secant variety $\Sigma$ that comes equipped with the embedding $\Sigma\subset\mathbb{P}^N$ by its construction. In this article, we determine the local cohomological dimension $\textrm{lcd}(\mathbb{P}^N,\Sigma)$ of this embedding, as well as the generation level of the Hodge filtration on the topmost non-vanishing local cohomology module $\mathcal{H}^{q}_{\Sigma}(\mathcal{O}_{\mathbb{P}^N})$, i.e., when $q=\textrm{lcd}(\mathbb{P}^N,\Sigma)$. Additionally, we show that $\Sigma$ has quotient singularities (in which case the equality $\textrm{lcd}(\mathbb{P}^N,\Sigma)=\textrm{codim}_{\mathbb{P}^N}(\Sigma)$ is known to hold) if and only if $X\cong\mathbb{P}^1$. We also provide a complete classification of $(X,L)$ for which $\Sigma$ has ($\mathbb{Q}$-)Gorentein singularities. As a consequence, we deduce that if $\Sigma$ is a local complete intersection, then either $X$ is isomorphic to $\mathbb{P}^1$, or an elliptic curve.

Singularities of secant varieties from a Hodge theoretic perspective

We study the singularities of secant varieties of smooth projective varieties using methods from birational geometry when the embedding line bundle is sufficiently positive. More precisely, we study the Du Bois complex of secant varieties and its relationship with the sheaves of differential forms. Through this analysis, we give a necessary and sufficient condition for these varieties to have $p$-Du Bois singularities (in a sense that was proposed in [SVV23]). In addition, we show that the singularities of these varieties are never higher rational, by giving a classification of the cases when they are pre-1-rational. From these results, we deduce several consequences, including a Kodaira-Akizuki-Nakano type vanishing result for the reflexive differential forms of the secant varieties.

Weighted Hodge ideals of reduced divisors

We study the Hodge and weight filtrations on the localization along a hypersurface, using methods from birational geometry and the $V$-filtration induced by a local defining equation. These filtrations give rise to ideal sheaves called weighted Hodge ideals, which include the adjoint ideal and a multiplier ideal. We analyze their local and global properties, from which we deduce applications related to singularities of hypersurfaces of smooth varieties.

On a conjecture of Bitoun and Schedler

Suppose that $X$ is a smooth complex algebraic variety of dimension $\geq 3$ and $f$ defines a hypersurface $Z$ in $X$, with a unique singular point $P$. Bitoun and Schedler conjectured that the ${\mathcal D}$-module generated by $\tfrac{1}{f}$ has length equal to $g_P(Z)+2$, where $g_{P}(Z)$ is the reduced genus of $Z$ at $P$. We prove that this length is always $\geq g_P(Z)+2$ and equality holds if and only if $\tfrac{1}{f}$ lies in the ${\mathcal D}$-module generated by $I_0(f)\tfrac{1}{f}$, where $I_0(f)$ is the multiplier ideal ${\mathcal J}(f^{1-\epsilon})$, with $0<\epsilon\ll 1$. In particular, we see that the conjecture holds if the pair $(X,Z)$ is log canonical. We can also recover, with an easy proof, the result of Bitoun and Schedler saying that the conjecture holds for weighted homogeneous isolated singularities. On the other hand, we give an example (a polynomial in $3$ variables with an ordinary singular point of multiplicity $4$) for which the conjecture does not hold.

The Du Bois complex of a hypersurface and the minimal exponent

We study the Du Bois complex $\underline{\Omega}_Z^\bullet$ of a hypersurface $Z$ in a smooth complex algebraic variety in terms its minimal exponent $\widetilde{\alpha}(Z)$. The latter is an invariant of singularities, defined as the negative of the greatest root of the reduced Bernstein-Sato polynomial of $Z$, and refining the log canonical threshold. We show that if $\widetilde{\alpha}(Z)\geq p+1$, then the canonical morphism $\Omega_Z^p\to \underline{\Omega}_Z^p$ is an isomorphism, where $\underline{\Omega}_Z^p$ is the $p$-th associated graded piece of the Du Bois complex with respect to the Hodge filtration. On the other hand, if $Z$ is singular and $\widetilde{\alpha}(Z)>p\geq 2$, we obtain non-vanishing results for some of the higher cohomologies of $\underline{\Omega}_Z^{n-p}$.

Weighted multiplier ideals of reduced divisors

We use methods from birational geometry to study the Hodge and weight filtrations on the localization along a hypersurface. We focus on the lowest piece of the Hodge filtration of the submodules arising from the weight filtration. This leads to a sequence of ideal sheaves called weighted multiplier ideals. The last ideal of this sequence is a multiplier ideal (and a Hodge ideal), and we prove that the first is the adjoint ideal. We also study the local and global properties of weighted multiplier ideals and their applications to singularities of hypersurfaces of smooth varieties.

On the nonnegativity of stringy Hodge numbers

We study the nonnegativity of stringy Hodge numbers of a projective variety with Gorenstein canonical singularities, which was conjectured by Batyrev. We prove that the $(p,1)$-stringy Hodge numbers are nonnegative, and for threefolds we obtain new results about the stringy Hodge diamond, which hold even when the stringy $E$-function is not a polynomial. We also use the Decomposition Theorem and mixed Hodge theory to prove Batyrev's conjecture for a class of fourfolds.

Local vanishing and Hodge filtration for rational singularities

Given an n-dimensional variety Z with rational singularities, we conjecture that for a resolution of singularities whose reduced exceptional divisor E has simple normal crossings, the (n-1)-th higher direct image of the sheaf of differential forms with log poles along E vanishes. We prove this when Z has isolated singularities and when it is a toric variety. We deduce that for a divisor D with isolated rational singularities on a smooth complex n-dimensional variety X, the generation level of Saito's Hodge filtration on the localization of the structure sheaf along D is at most n-3.
