Mean field limit for interacting systems on co-evolving networks

Interacting particle systems are in frequent use to model collective behaviour in various situations and applications. For many systems, the interaction between the agents is restricted to an underlying network structure and often, the latter also evolves in time with its dynamics coupled to the evolution of the particles. Due to their relevance for applications such systems on adaptive or co-evolutionary networks have received increasing interest in recent years. In particular, a fundamental question concerns the behaviour of the system in the infinite particle limit. In this work we provide a mean-field description for a general particle system which exhibits non-locality in time (memory). The result applies particularly to a large class of systems on co-evolving networks including non-linear weight dynamics.

The Amplitude Equation for the Space-Fractional Swift-Hohenberg Equation

Non-local reaction-diffusion partial differential equations (PDEs) involving the fractional Laplacian have arisen in a wide variety of applications. One common tool to analyse the dynamics of classical local PDEs near instability is to derive local amplitude/modulation approximations, which provide local normal forms classifying a wide variety of pattern-formation phenomena. In this work, we study amplitude equations for the space-fractional Swift-Hohenberg equation. The Swift-Hohenberg equation is a basic model problem motivated by pattern formation in fluid dynamics and has served as one of the main PDEs to develop general techniques to derive amplitude equations. We prove that there exists near the first bifurcation point an approximation by a (real) Ginzburg-Landau equation. Interestingly, this Ginzburg-Landau equation is a local PDE, which provides a rigorous justification of the physical conjecture that suitably localized unstable modes can out-compete superdiffusion and re-localize a PDE near instability. Our main technical contributions are to provide a suitable function space setting for the approximation problem, and to then bound the residual between the original PDE and its amplitude equation.

Continuum limit for interacting systems on adaptive networks

The article considers systems of interacting particles on networks with adaptively coupled dynamics. Such processes appear frequently in natural processes and applications. Relying on the notion of graph convergence, we prove that for large systems the dynamics can be approximated by the corresponding continuum limit. Well-posedness of the latter is also established.

One-dimensional inelastic Boltzmann equation: Regularity \& uniqueness of self-similar profiles for moderately hard potentials

We prove uniqueness of self-similar profiles for the one-dimensional inelastic Boltzmann equation with moderately hard potentials, that is with collision kernel of the form | $\bullet$ | $\gamma$ for $\gamma$ > 0 small enough (explicitly quantified). Our result provides the first uniqueness statement for self-similar profiles of inelastic Boltzmann models allowing for strong inelasticity besides the explicitly solvable case of Maxwell interactions (corresponding to $\gamma$ = 0). Our approach relies on a perturbation argument from the corresponding Maxwell model through a careful study of the associated linearised operator. In particular, a part of the paper is devoted to the trend to equilibrium for the Maxwell model in suitable weighted Sobolev spaces, an extension of results which are known to hold in weaker topologies. Our results can be seen as a first step towards a full proof, in the one-dimensional setting, of a conjecture in Ernst \& Brito (2002) regarding the determination of the long-time behaviour of solutions to inelastic Boltzmann equation.

Contractivity for Smoluchowski's coagulation equation with solvable kernels

We show that the Smoluchowski coagulation equation with the solvable kernels $K(x,y)$ equal to $2$, $x+y$ or $xy$ is contractive in suitable Laplace norms. In particular, this proves exponential convergence to a self-similar profile in these norms. These results are parallel to similar properties of Maxwell models for Boltzmann-type equations, and extend already existing results on exponential convergence to self-similarity for Smoluchowski's coagulation equation.

The scaling hypothesis for Smoluchowski's coagulation equation with bounded perturbations of the constant kernel

We consider Smoluchowski's coagulation equation with a kernel of the form $K = 2 + \epsilon W$, where $W$ is a bounded kernel of homogeneity zero. For small $\epsilon$, we prove that solutions approach a universal, unique self-similar profile for large times, at almost the same speed as the constant kernel case (the speed is exponential when self-similar variables are considered). All the constants we use can be explicitly estimated. Our method is a constructive perturbation analysis of the equation, based on spectral results on the linearisation of the constant kernel case. To our knowledge, this is the first time the scaling hypothesis can be fully proved for a family of kernels which are not explicitly solvable.

Stability and uniqueness of self-similar profiles in $L^1$ spaces for perturbations of the constant kernel in Smoluchowski's coagulation equation

In this work, we consider self-similar profiles for Smoluchowski's coagulation equation for kernels which are possibly unbounded perturbations of the constant one. For this model, we show that the self-similar solutions for the perturbed kernel are close in weighted $L^1$ spaces to the profile of the unperturbed equation, i.e. the profiles are stable with respect to the perturbation. Additionally, we revisit the problem of uniqueness for these coagulation kernels. In fact, we will improve a corresponding result (see arXiv:1510.03361 and ref. [22]) by relaxing the conditions on the perturbation significantly while at the same time the corresponding proof can also be notably shortened.

Power Network Dynamics on Graphons

Power grids are undergoing major changes from a few large producers to smart grids build upon renewable energies. Mathematical models for power grid dynamics have to be adapted to capture, when dynamic nodes can achieve synchronization to a common grid frequency on complex network topologies. In this paper we study a second-order rotator model in the large network limit. We merge the recent theory of random graph limits for complex small-world networks with approaches to first-order systems on graphons. We prove that there exists a well-posed continuum limit integral equation approximating the large finite-dimensional case power grid network dynamics. Then we analyse the linear stability of synchronized solutions and prove linear stability. However, on small-world networks we demonstrate that there are topological parameters moving the spectrum arbitrarily close to the imaginary axis leading to potential instability on finite time scales.

Self-similar asymptotic behavior for the solutions of a linear coagulation equation

In this paper we consider the long time asymptotics of a linear version of the Smoluchowski equation which describes the evolution of a tagged particle moving at constant speed in a random distribution of fixed particles. The volumes $v$ of the particles are independently distributed according to a probability distribution which decays asymptotically as a power law $v^{-σ}$. The validity of the equation has been rigorously proved in \cite{NoV} for values of the exponent $σ>3$. The solutions of this equation display a rich structure of different asymptotic behaviours according to the different values of the exponent $σ$. Here we show that for $\frac{5}{3}<σ<2$ the linear Smoluchowski equation is well posed and that there exists a unique self-similar profile which is asymptotically stable.

Smoluchowski's discrete coagulation equation with forcing

In this article we study an extension of Smoluchowski's discrete coagulation equation, where particle in- and output takes place. This model is frequently used to describe aggregation processes in combination with sedimentation of clusters. More precisely, we show that the evolution equation is well-posed for a large class of coagulation kernels and output rates. Additionally, in the long-time limit we prove that solutions converge to a unique equilibrium with exponential rate under a suitable smallness condition on the coefficients.

A revised proof of uniqueness of self-similar profiles to Smoluchowski's coagulation equation for kernels close to constant

In this article we correct the proof of a uniqueness result for self-similar solutions to Smoluchowski's coagulation equation for kernels $K=K(x,y)$ that are homogeneous of degree zero and close to constant in the sense that \begin{equation*} -\varepsilon \leq K(x,y)-2 \leq \varepsilon \left( \Big(\frac{x}{y}\Big)^α + \Big(\frac{y}{x}\Big)^α\right) \end{equation*} for $α\in [0,\frac 1 2)$. Assuming in addition that $K$ has an analytic extension to $\mathbb{C}\setminus(-\infty,0]$ and prescribing the precise asymptotic behaviour of $K$ at the origin, we prove that self-similar solutions with given mass are unique if $\varepsilon$ is sufficiently small.

Validity of amplitude equations for non-local non-linearities

Amplitude equations are used to describe the onset of instability in wide classes of partial differential equations (PDEs). One goal of the field is to determine simple universal/generic PDEs, to which many other classes of equations can be reduced, at least on a sufficiently long approximating time scale. In this work, we study the case, when the reaction terms are non-local. In particular, we consider quadratic and cubic convolution-type non-linearities. As a benchmark problem, we use the Swift-Hohenberg equation. The resulting amplitude equation is a Ginzburg-Landau PDE, where the coefficients can be calculated from the kernels. Our proof relies on separating critical and non-critical modes in Fourier space in combination with suitable kernel bounds.

Uniqueness of fat-tailed self-similar profiles to Smoluchowski's coagulation equation for a perturbation of the constant kernel

This article is concerned with the question of uniqueness of self-similar profiles for Smoluchowski's coagulation equation which exhibit algebraic decay (fat tails) at infinity. More precisely, we consider a rate kernel $K$ which can be written as $K=2+\varepsilon W$. The perturbation is assumed to have homogeneity zero and might also be singular both at zero and at infinity. Under further regularity assumptions on $W$, we will show that for sufficiently small $\varepsilon$ there exists, up to normalisation of the tail behaviour at infinity, at most one self-similar profile.

Precise tail behaviour of self-similar profiles with infinite mass for Smoluchowski's coagulation equation

We consider self-similar profiles to Smoluchowski's coagulation equation for which we derive the precise asymptotic behaviour at infinity. More precisely, we look at so-called fat-tailed profiles which decay algebraically and as a consequence have infinite total mass. The results only require mild assumptions on the coagulation kernel and thus cover a large class of rate kernels.

Self-similar solutions with fat tails for Smoluchowski's coagulation equation with singular kernels

We show the existence of self-similar solutions with fat tails for Smoluchowski's coagulation equation for homogeneous kernels satisfying $C_1 \left(x^{-a}y^{b}+x^{b}y^{-a}\right)\leq K\left(x,y\right)\leq C_2\left(x^{-a}y^{b}+x^{b}y^{-a}\right)$ with $a>0$ and $b<1$. This covers especially the case of Smoluchowski's classical kernel $K(x,y)=(x^{1/3} + y^{1/3})(x^{-1/3} + y^{-1/3})$. For the proof of existence we first consider some regularized kernel $K_ε$ for which we construct a sequence of solutions $h_ε$. In a second step we pass to the limit $ε\to 0$ to obtain a solution for the original kernel $K$. The main difficulty is to establish a uniform lower bound on $h_ε$. The basic idea for this is to consider the time-dependent problem and choosing a special test function that solves the dual problem.

Pinning of interfaces in a random elastic medium and logarithmic lattice embeddings in percolation

For a model of a driven interface in an elastic medium with random obstacles we prove existence of a stationary positive supersolution at non-vanishing driving force. This shows the emergence of a rate independent hysteresis through the interaction of the interface with the obstacles, despite a linear (force=velocity) microscopic kinetic relation. We also prove a percolation result, namely the possibility to embed the graph of an only logarithmically growing function in a next-nearest neighbor site-percolation cluster at a non-trivial percolation threshold.
