Coherent Interaction of a Single Fermion with a Small Bosonic Field

We have experimentally studied few-body impurity systems consisting of a single fermionic atom and a small bosonic field on the sites of an optical lattice. Quantum phase revival spectroscopy has allowed us to accurately measure the absolute strength of Bose-Fermi interactions as a function of the interspecies scattering length. Furthermore, we observe the modification of Bose-Bose interactions that is induced by the interacting fermion. Because of an interference between Bose-Bose and Bose-Fermi phase dynamics, we can infer the mean fermionic filling of the mixture and quantify its increase (decrease) when the lattice is loaded with attractive (repulsive) interspecies interactions.

Multi-Orbital Quantum Phase Diffusion

The collapses and revivals of a coherent matter wave field of interacting particles can serve as a sensitive interferometric probe of the interactions and the number statistics of the underlying quantum field. Here we show how the ability to observe long time traces of collapse and revival dynamics of a Bose-Einstein condensate loaded into a three-dimensional (3D) optical lattice allowed us to directly reveal the atom number statistics and the presence of effective coherent multi-particle interactions in a lattice. The multi-particle interactions are generated via virtual transitions to higher lattice orbitals and can find use for simulations of effective field theories with ultracold atoms in optical lattices. We measured their absolute strengths up to the case of six-particle interactions and compare our findings with theory.

Equivalence Classes of Optimal Structures in HP Protein Models Including Side Chains

Lattice protein models, as the Hydrophobic-Polar (HP) model, are a common abstraction to enable exhaustive studies on structure, function, or evolution of proteins. A main issue is the high number of optimal structures, resulting from the hydrophobicity-based energy function applied. We introduce an equivalence relation on protein structures that correlates to the energy function. We discuss the efficient enumeration of optimal representatives of the corresponding equivalence classes and the application of the results.

Anomalous Expansion of Attractively Interacting Fermionic Atoms in an Optical Lattice

Strong correlations can dramatically modify the thermodynamics of a quantum many-particle system. Especially intriguing behaviour can appear when the system adiabatically enters a strongly correlated regime, for the interplay between entropy and strong interactions can lead to counterintuitive effects. A well known example is the so-called Pomeranchuk effect, occurring when liquid 3He is adiabatically compressed towards its crystalline phase. Here, we report on a novel anomalous, isentropic effect in a spin mixture of attractively interacting fermionic atoms in an optical lattice. As we adiabatically increase the attraction between the atoms we observe that the gas, instead of contracting, anomalously expands. This expansion results from the combination of two effects induced by pair formation in a lattice potential: the suppression of quantum fluctuations as the attraction increases, which leads to a dominant role of entropy, and the progressive loss of the spin degree of freedom, which forces the gas to excite additional orbital degrees of freedom and expand to outer regions of the trap in order to maintain the entropy. The unexpected thermodynamics we observe reveal fundamentally distinctive features of pairing in the fermionic Hubbard model.

Trapping of Ultracold Atoms in a Hollow-core Photonic Crystal Fiber

Ultracold sodium atoms have been trapped inside a hollow-core optical fiber. The atoms are transferred from a free space optical dipole trap into a trap formed by a red-detuned gaussian light mode confined to the core of the fiber. We show that at least 5% of the atoms held initially in the free space trap can be loaded into the core of the fiber and retrieved outside.

Decomposition During Search for Propagation-Based Constraint Solvers

We describe decomposition during search (DDS), an integration of And/Or tree search into propagation-based constraint solvers. The presented search algorithm dynamically decomposes sub-problems of a constraint satisfaction problem into independent partial problems, avoiding redundant work. The paper discusses how DDS interacts with key features that make propagation-based solvers successful: constraint propagation, especially for global constraints, and dynamic search heuristics. We have implemented DDS for the Gecode constraint programming library. Two applications, solution counting in graph coloring and protein structure prediction, exemplify the benefits of DDS in practice.
