Heterogeneously Coupled Maps: hub dynamics and emergence across connectivity layers

The aim of this paper is to rigorously study dynamics of Heterogeneously Coupled Maps (HCM). Such systems are determined by a network with heterogeneous degrees. Some nodes, called hubs, are very well connected while most nodes interact with few others. The local dynamics on each node is chaotic, coupled with other nodes according to the network structure. Such high-dimensional systems are hard to understand in full, nevertheless we are able to describe the system over exponentially large time scales. In particular, we show that the dynamics of hub nodes can be very well approximated by a low-dimensional system. This allows us to establish the emergence of macroscopic behaviour such as coherence of dynamics among hubs of the same connectivity layer (i.e. with the same number of connections), and chaotic behaviour of the poorly connected nodes. The HCM we study provide a paradigm to explain why and how the dynamics of the network can change across layers.

Robustness of ergodic properties of nonautonomous piecewise expanding maps

Recently, there has been an increasing interest on nonautonomous composition of perturbed hyperbolic systems: composing perturbations of a given hyperbolic map $F$ results in statistical behaviour close to that of $F$. We show this fact in the case of piecewise regular expanding maps. In particular, we impose conditions on perturbations of this class of maps that include situations slightly more general than what has been considered so far, and prove that these are stochastically stable in the usual sense. We then prove that the evolution of a given distribution of mass under composition of time dependent perturbations (arbitrarily - rather than randomly - chosen at each step) close to a given map $F$ remains close to the invariant mass distribution of $F$. Moreover, for almost every point, Birkhoff averages along trajectories do not fluctuate wildly. This result complements recent results on memory loss for nonautonomous dynamical systems.

Complex box bounds for real maps

In this paper we prove complex bounds, also referred to as a priori bounds, for real analytic (and even C3) interval maps. This means that we associate to such a map a complex box mapping (which provides a kind of Markov structure), together with universal geometric bounds on the shape of the domains. Such bounds show that the first return maps to these domains are well-controlled, and consequently form one of the corner stones in many recent results on one-dimensional dynamics: renormalisation theory, rigidity results, density of hyperbolicity, local connectivity.

Monotonicity of entropy and positively oriented transversality for families of interval maps

In this paper we will develop a very general approach which shows that critical relations of holomorphic maps on the complex plane unfold transversally in a positively oriented way. We will mainly illustrate this approach to obtain transversality for a wide class of one-parameter families of interval maps, for example maps with flat critical points, piecewise linear maps, maps with discontinuities but also for families of maps with complex analytic extensions such as certain polynomial-like maps.

Payoff Performance of Fictitious Play

We investigate how well continuous-time fictitious play in two-player games performs in terms of average payoff, particularly compared to Nash equilibrium payoff. We show that in many games, fictitious play outperforms Nash equilibrium on average or even at all times, and moreover that any game is linearly equivalent to one in which this is the case. Conversely, we provide conditions under which Nash equilibrium payoff dominates fictitious play payoff. A key step in our analysis is to show that fictitious play dynamics asymptotically converges the set of coarse correlated equilibria (a fact which is implicit in the literature).

Density of hyperbolicity for classes of real transcendental entire functions and circle maps

We prove density of hyperbolicity in spaces of (i) real transcendental entire functions, bounded on the real line, whose singular set is finite and real and (ii) transcendental self-maps of the punctured plane which preserve the circle and whose singular set (apart from zero and infinity) is contained in the circle. In particular, we prove density of hyperbolicity in the famous Arnol'd family of circle maps and its generalizations, and solve a number of other open problems for these functions, including three conjectures by de Melo, Salomão and Vargas. We also prove density of (real) hyperbolicity for certain families as in (i) but without the boundedness condition. Our results apply, in particular, when the functions in question have only finitely many critical points and asymptotic singularities, or when there are no asymptotic values and the degree of critical points is uniformly bounded.

Monotonicity of entropy for real multimodal maps

In \cite{Mil}, Milnor posed the {\em Monotonicity Conjecture} that the set of parameters within a family of real multimodal polynomial interval maps, for which the topological entropy is constant, is connected. This conjecture was proved for quadratic by Milnor & Thurston \cite{MT} and for cubic maps by Milnor & Tresser, see \cite{MTr} and also \cite{DGMT}. In this paper we will prove the general case.

Dynamics of Coupled Maps in Heterogeneous Random Networks

We study expanding circle maps interacting in a heterogeneous random network. Heterogeneity means that some nodes in the network are massively connected, while the remaining nodes are only poorly connected. We provide a probabilistic approach which enables us to describe the effective dynamics of the massively connected nodes when taking a weak interaction limit. More precisely, we show that for almost every random network and almost all initial conditions the high dimensional network governing the dynamics of the massively connected nodes can be reduced to a few macroscopic equations. Such reduction is intimately related to the ergodic properties of the expanding maps. This reduction allows one to explore the coherent properties of the network.

On stochastic stability of expanding circle maps with neutral fixed points

It is well-known that the Manneville-Pomeau map with a parabolic fixed point of the form $x\mapsto x+x^{1+α} \mod 1$ is stochastically stable for $α\ge 1$ and the limiting measure is the Dirac measure at the fixed point. In this paper we show that if $α\in (0,1)$ then it is also stochastically stable. Indeed, the stationary measure of the random map converges strongly to the absolutely continuous invariant measure for the deterministic system as the noise tends to zero.

On the structure of isentropes of polynomial maps

The structure of isentropes (i.e. level sets of constant topological entropy) including the monotonicity of entropy, has been studied for polynomial interval maps since the 1980s. We show that isentropes of multimodal polynomial families need not be locally connected and that entropy does in general not depend monotonically on a single critical value.

Absence of line fields and Mane's theorem for non-recurrent transcendental functions

Let f be a transcendental meromorphic function. Suppose that the finite part of the postsingular set of f is bounded, that f has no recurrent critical points or wandering domains, and that the degree of pre-poles of f is uniformly bounded. Then we show that f supports no invariant line fields on its Julia set. We prove this by generalizing two results about rational functions to the transcendental setting: a theorem of Mane about the branching of iterated preimages of disks, and a theorem of McMullen regarding absence of invariant line fields for "measurably transitive" functions. Both our theorems extend results previously obtained by Graczyk, Kotus and Swiatek.

Local connectivity and quasi-conformal rigidity of non-renormalizable polynomials

We prove that topologically conjugate non-renormalizable polynomials are quasi-conformally conjugate. From this we derive that each such polynomial can be approximated by a hyperbolic polynomial. As a by product we prove that the Julia set of a non-renormalizable polynomials with only hyperbolic periodic points is locally connected, and the Branner-Hubbard conjecture. The main tools are the enhanced nest construction (developed in a previous joint paper with Weixiao Shen) and a lemma of Kahn and Lyubich (for which we give an elementary proof in the real case).

Rational functions with real multipliers

Let f be a rational function such that the multipliers of all repelling periodic points are real. We prove that the Julia set of such a function belongs to a circle. Combining this with a result of Fatou we conclude that whenever J(f) belongs to a smooth curve, it also belongs to a circle. Then we discuss rational functions whose Julia sets belong to a circle.

Decay of correlations in one-dimensional dynamics

We consider multimodal C^3 interval maps f satisfying a summability condition on the derivatives D_n along the critical orbits which implies the existence of an absolutely continuous f -invariant probability measure mu. If f is non-renormalizable, mu is mixing and we show that the speed of mixing (decay of correlations) is strongly related to the rate of growth of the sequence D_n as n tends to infinity . We also give sufficient conditions for mu to satisfy the Central Limit Theorem. This applies for example to the quadratic Fibonacci map which is shown to have subexponential decay of correlations.

Local connectivity of the Julia set of real polynomials

One of the main questions in the field of complex dynamics is the question whether the Mandelbrot set is locally connected, and related to this, for which maps the Julia set is locally connected. In this paper we shall prove the following Main Theorem: Let $f$ be a polynomial of the form $f(z)=z^d +c$ with $d$ an even integer and $c$ real. Then the Julia set of $f$ is either totally disconnected or locally connected. In particular, the Julia set of $z^2+c$ is locally connected if $c \in [-2,1/4]$ and totally disconnected otherwise.

Polynomial maps with a Julia set of positive measure

In this paper we shall show that there exists L_0 such that for each even integer L >= L_0 there exists $c_1 \in \rz$ for which the Julia set of $z --> z^L + c_1$ has positive Lebesgue measure. This solves an old problem. Editor's note: In 1997, it was shown by Xavier Buff that there was a serious flaw in the argument, leaving a gap in the proof. Currently (1999), the question of polynomials with a positive measure Julia sets remains open.
