Algebra objects in direct limit completions of compact Lie group duals and the classification of $c=1$ vertex operator algebras

Let $G$ be a complex reductive affine algebraic group with its symmetric tensor category $\mathcal{C}_G$ of finite-dimensional rational representations. We prove that every simple commutative algebra object with at most countable dimension in the direct limit completion $\operatorname{Ind}(\mathcal{C}_G)$ of $\mathcal{C}_G$ is isomorphic to the algebra $\mathcal{O}(G/H)$ of regular functions on the homogeneous space $G/H$, for some reductive algebraic subgroup $H$ of $G$. Then we apply this result to the theory of vertex operator algebra extensions. In particular, assuming the strong rationality of the $ \operatorname{A}_5$-orbifold of the vertex operator algebra $V_{\mathcal{L}_2}$ associated with the rank-one root lattice $\mathcal{L}_2:= \sqrt{2}\mathbb{Z}$, we classify all the not necessarily rational simple CFT type preunitary vertex operator algebra extensions of the simple unitary Virasoro vertex operator algebra $L(1,0)$ with central charge $c=1$ satisfying a certain spectrum condition. This result is the vertex operator algebra analogue of a conformal net result by Feng Xu. Every strongly rational preunitary vertex operator algebra extension of $L(1,0)$ satisfies the above spectrum condition because of the congruence subgroup modularity property of its characters. As a consequence, we get a complete classification result for strongly rational $c=1$ vertex operator algebras, up to the strong rationality of $V_{\mathcal{L}_2}^{\operatorname{A}_5}$.

Vertex operator algebras, partition functions and Teichm\"{u}ller modular forms

In the spirit of the geometric approach to two-dimensional conformal field theory, we explicitly associate to every holomorphic vertex operator algebra a section of a power of Hodge line bundle on the moduli space of curves of arbitrary genus - or equivalently a Teichm\"{u}ller modular form in any genus. As a first application, we connect the geometry of the moduli space of curves to the classification program for holomorphic vertex algebras. We then discuss how to use the theory of holomorphic vertex algebras to reach new results about the moduli space of curves. In the last part of the paper we study how the above mentioned forms can be used to reconstruct the vertex algebra.

Conformal nets from minimal W-algebras

We show the strong graded locality of all unitary minimal W-algebras, so that they give rise to irreducible graded-local conformal nets. Among these unitary vertex superalgebras, up to taking tensor products with free fermion vertex superalgebras, there are the unitary Virasoro vertex algebras (N=0) and the unitary N=1,2,3,4 super-Virasoro vertex superalgebras. Accordingly, we have a uniform construction that gives, besides the already known N=0,1,2 super-Virasoro nets, also the new N=3,4 super-Virasoro nets. All strongly rational unitary minimal W-algebras give rise to previously known completely rational graded-local conformal nets and we conjecture that the converse is also true. We prove this conjecture for all unitary W-algebras corresponding to the N=0,1,2,3,4 super-Virasoro vertex superalgebras.

Non-unitary Wightman CFTs and non-unitary vertex algebras

We give an equivalence of categories between: (i) M\"obius vertex algebras which are equipped with a choice of generating family of quasiprimary vectors, and (ii) (not-necessarily-unitary) M\"obius-covariant Wightman conformal field theories on the unit circle. We do not impose any technical restrictions on the theories considered (such as finite-dimensional conformal weight spaces or simplicity), yielding the most general equivalence between these two axiomatizations of two-dimensional chiral conformal field theory. This provides new opportunities to study non-unitary vertex algebras using the lens of algebraic conformal field theory and operator algebras, which we demonstrate by establishing a non-unitary version of the Reeh-Schlieder theorem.

Energy bounds for vertex operator algebra extensions

Let V be a simple unitary vertex operator algebra and U be a (polynomially) energy-bounded unitary subalgebra containing the conformal vector of V. We give two sufficient conditions implying that V is energy-bounded. The first condition is that U is a compact orbifold for some compact group G of unitary automorphisms of V. The second condition is that V is exponentially energy-bounded and it is a finite direct sum of simple U-modules. As consequence of the second condition, we prove that if U is a regular energy-bounded unitary subalgebra of a simple unitary vertex operator V, then $V$ is energy-bounded. In particular, every simple unitary extension (with the same conformal vector) of a simple unitary affine vertex operator algebra associated with a semisimple Lie algebra is energy-bounded.

Haploid algebras in $C^*$-tensor categories and the Schellekens list

We prove that a haploid associative algebra in a $C^*$-tensor category $\mathcal{C}$ is equivalent to a Q-system (a special $C^*$-Frobenius algebra) in $\mathcal{C}$ if and only if it is rigid. This allows us to prove the unitarity of all the 70 strongly rational holomorphic vertex operator algebras with central charge $c=24$ and non-zero weight-one subspace, corresponding to entries 1-70 of the so called Schellekens list. Furthermore, using the recent generalized deep hole construction of these vertex operator algebras, we prove that they are also strongly local in the sense of Carpi, Kawahigashi, Longo and Weiner and consequently we obtain some new holomorphic conformal nets associated to the entries of the list. Finally, we completely classify the simple CFT type vertex operator superalgebra extensions of the unitary $N=1$ and $N=2$ super-Virasoro vertex operator superalgebras with central charge $c<\frac{3}{2}$ and $c<3$ respectively, relying on the known classification results for the corresponding superconformal nets.

Local energy bounds and strong locality in chiral CFT

A family of quantum fields is said to be strongly local if it generates a local net of von Neumann algebras. There are few methods of showing directly strong locality of a quantum field. Among them, linear energy bounds are the most widely used, yet a chiral conformal field of conformal weight $d>2$ cannot admit linear energy bounds. In this paper we give a new direct method to prove strong locality in two-dimensional conformal field theory. We prove that if a chiral conformal field satisfies an energy bound of degree $d-1$, then it also satisfies a certain local version of the energy bound, and this in turn implies strong locality. A central role in our proof is played by diffeomorphism symmetry. As a concrete application, we show that the vertex operator algebra given by a unitary vacuum representation of the $\mathcal{W}_3$-algebra is strongly local. For central charge $c > 2$, this yields a new conformal net. We further prove that these nets do not satisfy strong additivity, and hence are not completely rational.

From vertex operator superalgebras to graded-local conformal nets and back

We generalize the Carpi-Kawahigashi-Longo-Weiner correspondence between vertex operator algebras and conformal nets to the case of vertex operator superalgebras and graded-local conformal nets by introducing the notion of strongly graded-local vertex operator superalgebra. Then we apply our machinery to a number of well-known examples including superconformal field theory models. We also prove that all lattice VOSAs are strongly graded-local. Furthermore, we prove strong graded-locality of the super-Moonshine VOSA, whose group of automorphisms preserving the superconformal structure is isomorphic to Conway's largest sporadic simple group, and of the shorter Moonshine VOSA, whose automorphisms group is isomorphic to the direct product of the baby Monster with a cyclic group of order two.

Positive energy representations of Sobolev diffeomorphism groups of the circle

We show that any positive energy projective unitary representation of Diff(S^1) extends to a strongly continuous projective unitary representation of the fractional Sobolev diffeomorphisms D^s(S^1) for any real s>3, and in particular to C^k-diffeomorphisms Diff^k(S^1) with k>=4. A similar result holds for the universal covering groups provided that the representation is assumed to be a direct sum of irreducibles. As an application we show that a conformal net of von Neumann algebras on S^1 is covariant with respect to D^s(S^1), s > 3. Moreover every direct sum of irreducible representations of a conformal net is also D^s(S^1)-covariant.

Unitary representations of the $\mathcal{W}_3$-algebra with $c\geq 2$

We prove unitarity of the vacuum representation of the $\mathcal{W}_3$-algebra for all values of the central charge $c\geq 2$. We do it by modifying the free field realization of Fateev and Zamolodchikov resulting in a representation which, by a nontrivial argument, can be shown to be unitary on a certain invariant subspace, although it is not unitary on the full space of the two currents needed for the construction. These vacuum representations give rise to simple unitary vertex operator algebras. We also construct explicitly unitary representations for many positive lowest weight values. Taking into account the known form of the Kac determinants, we then completely clarify the question of unitarity of the irreducible lowest weight representations of the $\mathcal{W}_3$-algebra in the $2\leq c\leq 98$ region.

From vertex operator algebras to conformal nets and back

We consider unitary simple vertex operator algebras whose vertex operators satisfy certain energy bounds and a strong form of locality and call them strongly local. We present a general procedure which associates to every strongly local vertex operator algebra V a conformal net A_V acting on the Hilbert space completion of V and prove that the isomorphism class of A_V does not depend on the choice of the scalar product on V. We show that the class of strongly local vertex operator algebras is closed under taking tensor products and unitary subalgebras and that, for every strongly local vertex operator algebra V, the map W\mapsto A_W gives a one-to-one correspondence between the unitary subalgebras W of V and the covariant subnets of A_V. Many known examples of vertex operator algebras such as the unitary Virasoro vertex operator algebras, the unitary affine Lie algebras vertex operator algebras, the known c=1 unitary vertex operator algebras, the moonshine vertex operator algebra, together with their coset and orbifold subalgebras, turn out to be strongly local. We give various applications of our results. In particular we show that the even shorter Moonshine vertex operator algebra is strongly local and that the automorphism group of the corresponding conformal net is the Baby Monster group. We prove that a construction of Fredenhagen and Jörss gives back the strongly local vertex operator algebra V from the conformal net A_V and give conditions on a conformal net A implying that A= A_V for some strongly local vertex operator algebra V.

Loop groups and noncommutative geometry

We describe the representation theory of loop groups in terms of K-theory and noncommutative geometry. This is done by constructing suitable spectral triples associated with the level l projective unitary positive-energy representations of any given loop group $LG$. The construction is based on certain supersymmetric conformal field theory models associated with LG in the setting of conformal nets. We then generalize the construction to many other rational chiral conformal field theory models including coset models and the moonshine conformal net.

Operator algebras and vertex operator algebras

In two-dimensional conformal field theory (CFT) the building blocks are given by chiral CFTs, i.e.~CFTs on the unit circle (compactified light-ray). They are generated by quantum fields depending on one light-ray coordinate only. There are two mathematical formulations of chiral CFT, the one based on vertex operator algebras (VOAs) and the one based on conformal nets. We describe some recent results which, for first time, gives a general construction of conformal nets from (unitary) VOAs.

N=2 superconformal nets

We provide an Operator Algebraic approach to N=2 chiral Conformal Field Theory and set up the Noncommutative Geometric framework. Compared to the N=1 case, the structure here is much richer. There are naturally associated nets of spectral triples and the JLO cocycles separate the Ramond sectors. We construct the N=2 superconformal nets of von Neumann algebras in general, classify them in the discrete series c<3, and we define and study an operator algebraic version of the N=2 spectral flow. We prove the coset identification for the N=2 super-Virasoro nets with c<3, a key result whose equivalent in the vertex algebra context has seemingly not been completely proved so far. Finally, the chiral ring is discussed in terms of net representations.

Superconformal nets and noncommutative geometry

This paper provides a further step in our program of studying superconformal nets over S^1 from the point of view of noncommutative geometry. For any such net A and any family Delta of localized endomorphisms of the even part A^gamma of A, we define the locally convex differentiable algebra A_Delta with respect to a natural Dirac operator coming from supersymmetry. Having determined its structure and properties, we study the family of spectral triples and JLO entire cyclic cocycles associated to elements in Delta and show that they are nontrivial and that the cohomology classes of the cocycles corresponding to inequivalent endomorphisms can be separated through their even or odd index pairing with K-theory in various cases. We illustrate some of those cases in detail with superconformal nets associated to well-known CFT models, namely super-current algebra nets and super-Virasoro nets. All in all, the result allows us to encode parts of the representation theory of the net in terms of noncommutative geometry.

How to add a boundary condition

Given a conformal QFT local net of von Neumann algebras B_2 on the two-dimensional Minkowski spacetime with irreducible subnet A\otimes\A, where A is a completely rational net on the left/right light-ray, we show how to consistently add a boundary to B_2: we provide a procedure to construct a Boundary CFT net B of von Neumann algebras on the half-plane x>0, associated with A, and locally isomorphic to B_2. All such locally isomorphic Boundary CFT nets arise in this way. There are only finitely many locally isomorphic Boundary CFT nets and we get them all together. In essence, we show how to directly redefine the C* representation of the restriction of B_2 to the half-plane by means of subfactors and local conformal nets of von Neumann algebras on S^1.

Representations of Conformal Nets, Universal C*-Algebras and K-Theory

We study the representation theory of a conformal net A on the circle from a K-theoretical point of view using its universal C*-algebra C*(A). We prove that if A satisfies the split property then, for every representation πof A with finite statistical dimension, π(C*(A)) is weakly closed and hence a finite direct sum of type I_\infty factors. We define the more manageable locally normal universal C*-algebra C*_ln(A) as the quotient of C*(A) by its largest ideal vanishing in all locally normal representations and we investigate its structure. In particular, if A is completely rational with n sectors, then C*_ln(A) is a direct sum of n type I_\infty factors. Its ideal K_A of compact operators has nontrivial K-theory, and we prove that the DHR endomorphisms of C*(A) with finite statistical dimension act on K_A, giving rise to an action of the fusion semiring of DHR sectors on K_0(K_A)$. Moreover, we show that this action corresponds to the regular representation of the associated fusion algebra.
