SBV functions in Carnot-Carath\'eodory spaces

We introduce the space SBV$_X$ of special functions with bounded $X$-variation in Carnot-Carath\'eodory spaces and study its main properties. Our main outcome is an approximation result, with respect to the BV$_X$ topology, for SBV$_X$ functions.

Surface measure on, and the local geometry of, sub-Riemannian manifolds

We prove an integral formula for the spherical measure of hypersurfaces in equiregular sub-Riemannian manifolds. Among various technical tools, we establish a general criterion for the uniform convergence of parametrized sub-Riemannian distances, and local uniform asymptotics for the diameter of small metric balls.

Weighted Gagliardo-Nirenberg inequalities via Optimal Transport Theory and Applications

We prove Gagliardo-Nirenberg inequalities with three weights -- verifying a joint concavity condition -- on open convex cones of $\mathbb R^n$. If the weights are equal to each other the inequalities become sharp and we compute explicitly the sharp constants. For a certain range of parameters we can characterize the class of extremal functions; in this case, we also show that the sharpness in the main three-weighted Gagliardo-Nirenberg inequality implies that the weights must be equal up to some constant multiplicative factors. Our approach uses optimal mass transport theory and a careful analysis of the joint concavity condition of the weights. As applications we establish sharp weighted $p$-log-Sobolev, Faber-Krahn and isoperimetric inequalities with explicit sharp constants.

Sharp weighted log-Sobolev inequalities: characterization of equality cases and applications

By using optimal mass transport theory, we provide a direct proof to the sharp $L^p$-log-Sobolev inequality $(p\geq 1)$ involving a log-concave homogeneous weight on an open convex cone $E\subseteq \mathbb R^n$. The perk of this proof is that it allows to characterize the extremal functions realizing the equality cases in the $L^p$-log-Sobolev inequality. The characterization of the equality cases is new for $p\geq n$ even in the unweighted setting and $E=\mathbb R^n$. As an application, we provide a sharp weighted hypercontractivity estimate for the Hopf-Lax semigroup related to the Hamilton-Jacobi equation, characterizing also the equality cases.

Lipschitz minimizers for a class of integral functionals under the bounded slope condition

We consider the functional $\int_Ωg(\nabla u+\textbf X^\ast)d\mathscr L^{2n}$ where $g$ is convex and $\textbf X^\ast(x,y)=2(-y,x)$ and we study the minimizers in $BV(Ω)$ of the associated Dirichlet problem. We prove that, under the bounded slope condition on the boundary datum, and suitable conditions on $g$, there exists a unique minimizer which is also Lipschitz continuous.

Distributional solutions of Burgers' type equations for intrinsic graphs in Carnot groups of step 2

We prove that in arbitrary Carnot groups $\mathbb G$ of step 2, with a splitting $\mathbb G=\mathbb W\cdot\mathbb L$ with $\mathbb L$ one-dimensional, the graph of a continuous function $φ\colon U\subseteq \mathbb W\to \mathbb L$ is $C^1_{\mathrm{H}}$-regular precisely when $φ$ satisfies, in the distributional sense, a Burgers' type system $D^φφ=ω$, with a continuous $ω$. We stress that this equivalence does not hold already in the easiest step-3 Carnot group, namely the Engel group. As a tool for the proof we show that a continuous distributional solution $φ$ to a Burgers' type system $D^φφ=ω$, with $ω$ continuous, is actually a broad solution to $D^φφ=ω$. As a by-product of independent interest we obtain that all the continuous distributional solutions to $D^φφ=ω$, with $ω$ continuous, enjoy $1/2$-little Hölder regularity along vertical directions.

Characterizations of uniformly differentiable co-horizontal intrinsic graphs in Carnot groups

In arbitrary Carnot groups we study intrinsic graphs of maps with horizontal target. These graphs are $C^1_H$ regular exactly when the map is uniformly intrinsically differentiable. Our first main result characterizes the uniformly intrinsic differentiability by means of Hölder properties along the projections of left-invariant vector fields on the graph. We strengthen the result in step-2 Carnot groups for intrinsic real-valued maps by only requiring horizontal regularity. We remark that such a refinement is not possible already in the easiest step-3 group. As a by-product of independent interest, in every Carnot group we prove an area-formula for uniformly intrinsically differentiable real-valued maps. We also explicitly write the area element in terms of the intrinsic derivatives of the map.

Local minimizers and Gamma-convergence for nonlocal perimeters in Carnot Groups

We prove the local minimality of halfspaces in Carnot groups for a class of nonlocal functionals usually addressed as nonlocal perimeters. Moreover, in a class of Carnot groups in which the De Giorgi's rectifiability Theorem holds, we provide a lower bound for the $Γ$-liminf of the rescaled energy in terms of the horizontal perimeter.

A rectifiability result for finite-perimeter sets in Carnot groups

In the setting of Carnot groups, we are concerned with the rectifiability problem for subsets that have finite sub-Riemannian perimeter. We introduce a new notion of rectifiability that is, possibly, weaker than the one introduced by Franchi, Serapioni, and Serra Cassano. Namely, we consider subsets $\Gamma$ that, similarly to intrinsic Lipschitz graphs, have a cone property: there exists an open dilation-invariant subset $C$ whose translations by elements in $\Gamma$ don't intersect $\Gamma$. However, a priori the cone $C$ may not have any horizontal directions in its interior. In every Carnot group, we prove that the reduced boundary of every finite-perimeter subset can be covered by countably many subsets that have such a cone property. The cones are related to the semigroups generated by the horizontal half-spaces determined by the normal directions. We further study the case when one can find horizontal directions in the interior of the cones, in which case we infer that finite-perimeter subsets are countably rectifiable with respect to intrinsic Lipschitz graphs. A sufficient condition for this to hold is the existence of a horizontal one-parameter subgroup that is not an abnormal curve. As an application, we verify that this property holds in every filiform group, of either first or second kind.

Fine properties of functions with bounded variation in Carnot-Carathéodory spaces

We study properties of functions with bounded variation in Carnot-Ca\-ra\-théo\-do\-ry spaces. We prove their almost everywhere approximate differentiability and we examine their approximate discontinuity set and the decomposition of their distributional derivatives. Under an additional assumption on the space, called property $\mathcal R$, we show that almost all approximate discontinuities are of jump type and we study a representation formula for the jump part of the derivative.

A compactness result for BV functions in metric spaces

We prove a compactness result for bounded sequences $(u_j)_j$ of functions with bounded variation in metric spaces $(X,d_j)$ where the space $X$ is fixed but the metric may vary with $j$. We also provide an application to Carnot-Carathéodory spaces.

Rank-one theorem and subgraphs of BV functions in Carnot groups

We prove a rank-one theorem à la G. Alberti for the derivatives of vector-valued maps with bounded variation in a class of Carnot groups that includes Heisenberg groups $\mathbb H^n$ for $n\geq 2$. The main tools are properties relating the horizontal derivatives of a real-valued function with bounded variation and its subgraph.
