Generalized Uncertainty Principle theory with a single constraint

We aim to analyze the consistency of the deformation of the Heisenberg algebra in the setting of constrained Hamiltonian systems, providing a procedure to induce the deformation on the Poisson algebra after symplectic reduction. We investigate this in the context of the classical interpretation of Generalized Uncertainty Principle theories, treating two cases separately. For the first case, we consider a group action on the phase space together with a set of first-class constraints that can be interpreted as a momentum map. We furnish an explicit example in the case of rotational invariant deformed algebras. In the second case, we consider a single constraint provided by the Hamiltonian, which is a common instance in General Relativity, with straightforward application in cosmology.

Unitary equivalence in Generalized Uncertainty Principle theories

We analyze the issue of unitary equivalence within Generalized Uncertainty Principle (GUP) theories in the one-dimensional case. For a deformed Heisenberg algebra, its representation in terms of Hilbert space and conjugate operators is not uniquely determined, raising the question of whether different realizations of the same algebra are equivalent and describe the same physics. After proposing a definition of a quantum GUP theory, we establish conditions for unitary equivalence. Using this framework, we rigorously prove that two commonly used representations are unitarily equivalent, specifying the conditions under which this equivalence holds. We demonstrate this equivalence explicitly by providing a unitary map and showing how both GUP formulations yield the same physical results in two examples: the quantum harmonic oscillator and a free-falling particle. Finally, we discuss a case in which equivalence fails, suggesting that a generalization of the Stone-von Neumann theorem may not be possible within the GUP framework under our definition of unitary equivalence.

Dynamics of the Mixmaster Universe in a non-commutative Generalized Uncertainty Principle framework

In this work, we examine the dynamical aspects of the cosmological Mixmaster model within the framework of non-commutative generalized uncertainty principle (GUP) theories. The theory is formulated classically by introducing a well-defined symplectic form that differs from the ordinary one, thereby inducing a general deformation of the Poisson brackets describing a precise class of GUP theories. In this general setting, we first investigate the behavior of the Bianchi I and Bianchi II models using Misner variables. Then, we study the Bianchi IX model in the Mixmaster approximation, which is well-known for accurately reproducing the dynamics of the point-particle Universe approaching the cosmological singularity. We derive the corresponding Belinsky-Khalatnikov-Lifshitz (BKL) map and then, by selecting a specific GUP model associated with string theory, we explicitly investigate its resulting features shaped by the non-commutative GUP scheme. Our findings reveal that the chaotic and ergodic behavior typically observed in the standard BKL map, which characterizes the point-Universe's approach to the singularity, is replaced by quasi-periodic orbits in the parameter space of the theory. This corresponds to an oscillatory behavior of the Universe's scale factors, dependent on the initial conditions.

Generalized Uncertainty Principle theories and their classical interpretation

In this work, we show that it is possible to define a classical system associated with a Generalized Uncertainty Principle (GUP) theory via the implementation of a consistent symplectic structure. This provides a solid framework for the classical Hamiltonian formulation of such theories and the study of the dynamics of physical systems in the corresponding deformed phase space. By further characterizing the functions that govern non-commutativity in the configuration space using the algebra of angular momentum, we determine a general form for the rotation generator in these theories and crucially, we show that, under these conditions, unlike what has been previously found in the literature at the quantum level, this requirement does not lead to the superselection of GUP models at the classical level. Finally, we postulate that a properly defined GUP theory can be correctly interpreted classically if and only if the corresponding quantum commutators satisfy the Jacobi identities, identifying those quantization prescriptions for which this holds true.

n-dimensional non-commutative GUP quantization and application to the Bianchi I model

We analyse a n-dimensional Generalized Uncertainty Principle (GUP) quantization framework, characterized by a non-commutative nature of the configurational variables. First, we identify a set of states which are maximally localized only along a single direction, at the expense of being less localized in all the other ones. Subsequently, in order to recover information about localization on the whole configuration space, we use the only state of the theory which exhibits maximal localization simultaneously in every direction to construct a satisfactory quasi-position representation, by virtue of a suitable translational operator. The resultant quantum framework is then applied to model the dynamics of the Bianchi I cosmology. The corresponding Wheeler-DeWitt equation is reduced to Schr\"odinger dynamics for the two anisotropy degrees of freedom, using a WKB representation for the volume-like variable of the Universe, in accordance with the Vilenkin scenario. The main result of our cosmological implementation of the constructed quantum theory demonstrates how the dynamics of a wave packet peaked at some point in the configuration space represented in the quasi-position variables, favours as the most probable configuration exactly the initial one for a relatively long time, if compared with the ordinary quantum theory. This preference arises from the distinct behavioral dynamics exhibited by wave packets in the two quantum theories.

Extended GUP formulation and the role of momentum cut-off

We analyze the extension of the GUP theory deriving from the modified uncertainty principle in agreement with the string low energy limit, which represents one of the most general formulations satisfying the Jacobi identity, in the context of the associative algebras. After providing some physical insights on the nature of the considered approaches exploiting the cosmological arena, first, we show how a natural formulation of the theory in an infinite momentum space does not lead to the emergence of a nonzero minimal uncertainty in position, then we construct a truncated formulation of the theory in momentum space, proving that only in this case we can recover the desired feature of the presence of a nonzero minimal uncertainty in position, which - as usual in these theories - can be interpreted as a phenomenological manifestation of cut-off physics effects. Both quantization schemes are completely characterized and finally applied to study wave packets' behavior and their evolution in time. The obtained results can shed light on which generalizations of the GUP theory are more coherent with the string low energy limit, in view of the existence of a minimum length in the form of a minimal uncertainty in position.

Kaluza-Klein theories in the framework of Polymer Quantum Mechanics

We provide a re-analysis of the $5D$ Kaluza-Klein theory by implementing the polymer representation of the dynamics, both on a classical and a quantum level, in order to introduce in the model information about the existence of a cut-off scale. We start by showing that, in the framework of semi-classical quantum mechanics, the $5D$ Bianchi I model admits a solution in which three space directions expand isotropically, while the remaining one is static, offering in this way a very valuable scenario to implement a Kaluza-Klein paradigm, identifying in such a static dimension the compactified one. We then analyse the behaviour of geodesic motion in the context of the polymer representation, as referred to a $5D$ space-time with a static dimension. We demonstrate that such a revised formulation allows overcoming one of the puzzling questions of the standard Kaluza-Klein model corresponding to the limit of the charge to mass ratio for a particle, inapplicable to any fundamental one. Indeed, here, such a ratio can be naturally attributed to particles predicted by the Standard Model and no internal contradiction of the theory arises on this level. Finally, we study the morphology of the field equation associated with a charged scalar particle, i.e. we analyse a Klein-Gordon equation, which fifth coordinate is viewed in the polymer representation. Here we obtain the surprising result that, although the Kaluza-Klein tower has a deformed structure characterized by irregular steps, the value predicted for the particle mass can be, in principle, set within the Standard Model mass distribution and hence, the problem of the Planckian value of such mass, typical of the standard formulation, is now overcome. However, a problem with the charge to mass ratio still survives in this quantum field formulation.
