Fitting an Escalier to a Curve

We analyze the problem of fitting a fonction en escalier or multi-step function to a curve in L^2 Hilbert space. We propose a two-stage optimization approach whereby the step positions are initially fixed, corresponding to a classic linear least-squares problem with closed-form solution, and then are allowed to vary, leading to first-order conditions that can be solved recursively. We find that, subject to regularity conditions, the speed of convergence is linear as the number of steps $n$ goes to infinity, and we develop a simple algorithm to recover the global optimum fit. Our numerical results based on a sweep search implementation show promising performance in terms of speed and accuracy.

Risk-Neutral Pricing of Random-Expiry Options Using Trinomial Trees

Random-expiry options are nontraditional derivative contracts that may expire early based on a random event. We develop a methodology for pricing these options using a trinomial tree, where the middle path is interpreted as early expiry. We establish that this approach is free of arbitrage, derive its continuous-time limit, and show how it may be implemented numerically in an efficient manner.

Tridiagonal and single-pair matrices and the inverse sum of two single-pair matrices

A novel factorization for the sum of two single-pair matrices is established as product of lower-triangular, tridiagonal, and upper-triangular matrices, leading to semi-closed-form formulas for tridiagonal matrix inversion. Subsequent factorizations are established, leading to semi-closed-form formulas for the inverse sum of two single-pair matrices. An application to derive the symbolic inverse of a particular Gram matrix is presented, and the numerical stability of the formulas is studied.
