Stringy Corrections to Heterotic SU(3)-Geometry

We analyse the $\alpha'^2$ corrections to the supersymmetry transformations constructed by Bergshoeff--de Roo for heterotic compactifications on SU(3) manifolds. The internal geometry remains complex and conformally balanced. The graviton equation of motion receives an explicit $\alpha'^2$ correction because the tangent-bundle connection appearing in the action is the composite Hull connection. We show that supersymmetry and the Bianchi identity imply all the equations of motion, including this correction. No instanton condition is required.

The decoupling of moduli about the standard embedding

We study the cohomology of an elliptic differential complex arising from the infinitesimal moduli of heterotic string theory. We compute these cohomology groups at the standard embedding, and show that they decompose into a direct sum of cohomologies. While this is often assumed in the literature, it had not been explicitly demonstrated. Given a stable gauge bundle over a complex threefold with trivial canonical bundle and no holomorphic vector fields, we also show that the Euler characteristic of this differential complex is zero. This points towards a perfect obstruction theory for the heterotic moduli problem, at least for the most physically relevant compactifications.

A Heterotic Hermitian--Yang--Mills Equivalence

We consider N=1, d=4 vacua of heterotic theories in the large radius limit in which alpha' << 1. We construct a real differential operator $\mathcal{D}= D+\bar{D}$ on an extension bundle $(Q, \mathcal{D})$ with underlying topology $Q=(T^{1,0}X)^* \oplus {\rm End} \, E \oplus T^{1,0} X$ whose curvature is holomorphic and Hermitian-Yang-Mills with respect to the complex structure and metric on the underlying non-Kahler complex 3-fold X if and only if the heterotic supersymmetry equations and Bianchi identity are satisfied. This is suggestive of an analogue of the Donaldson--Uhlenbeck--Yau correspondence for heterotic vacua of this type.

The Strominger system in the square of a K\"ahler class

We study the Strominger system with fixed balanced class. We show that classes which are the square of a K\"ahler metric admit solutions to the system for vector bundles satisfying the necessary conditions. Solutions are constructed by deforming a Calabi-Yau metric and a Hermitian-Yang-Mills metric along a path inside the given cohomology class.

Stability of the Type IIA flow and its applications in symplectic geometry

In this paper the dynamical stability of the Type IIA flow with no source near its stationary points is established. These stationary points had been shown previously by the authors to be Ricci-flat K\"ahler metrics on Calabi-Yau 3-folds. The dynamical stability of the Type IIA flow is then applied to prove the stability under symplectic deformations of the K\"ahler property for Calabi-Yau 3-folds.

Special Lagrangian cycles and Calabi-Yau transitions

We construct special Lagrangian 3-spheres in non-K\"ahler compact threefolds equipped with the Fu-Li-Yau geometry. These non-K\"ahler geometries emerge from topological transitions of compact Calabi-Yau threefolds. From this point of view, a conifold transition exchanges holomorphic 2-cycles for special Lagrangian 3-cycles.

Stability of the tangent bundle through conifold transitions

Let $X$ be a compact, K\"ahler, Calabi-Yau threefold and suppose $X\mapsto \underline{X}\leadsto X_t$ , for $t\in \Delta$, is a conifold transition obtained by contracting finitely many disjoint $(-1,-1)$ curves in $X$ and then smoothing the resulting ordinary double point singularities. We show that, for $|t|\ll 1$ sufficiently small, the tangent bundle $T^{1,0}X_{t}$ admits a Hermitian-Yang-Mills metric $H_t$ with respect to the conformally balanced metrics constructed by Fu-Li-Yau. Furthermore, we describe the behavior of $H_t$ near the vanishing cycles of $X_t$ as $t\rightarrow 0$.

Bochner-Kodaira Formulas and the Type IIA Flow

A new derivation of the flow of metrics in the Type IIA flow is given. It is adapted to the formulation of the flow as a variant of a Laplacian flow, and it uses the projected Levi-Civita connection of the metrics themselves instead of their conformal rescalings.

Geometric Flows for the Type IIA String

A geometric flow on $6$-dimensional symplectic manifolds is introduced which is motivated by supersymmetric compactifications of the Type IIA string. The underlying structure turns out to be SU(3) holonomy, but with respect to the projected Levi-Civita connection of an almost-Hermitian structure. The short-time existence is established, and new identities for the Nijenhuis tensor are found which are crucial for Shi-type estimates. The integrable case can be completely solved, giving an alternative proof of Yau's theorem on Ricci-flat K\"ahler metrics. In the non-integrable case, models are worked out which suggest that the flow should lead to optimal almost-complex structures compatible with the given symplectic form.

Estimates for a geometric flow for the Type IIB string

It is shown that bounds of all orders of derivative would follow from uniform bounds for the metric and the torsion 1-form, for a flow in non-K\"ahler geometry which can be interpreted as either a flow for the Type IIB string or the Anomaly flow with source term and zero slope parameter. A key ingredient in the proof is a formulation of this flow unifying it with the Ricci flow, which was recently found.

The Dirichlet Problem for the $k$-Hessian Equation on a complex manifold

We solve the Dirichlet problem for $k$-Hessian equations on compact complex manifolds with boundary, given the existence of a subsolution. Our method is based on a second order a priori estimate of the solution on the boundary with a particular gradient scale. The scale allows us to apply a blow-up argument to obtain control on all necessary norms of the solution.

Anomaly Flow and T-Duality

In this paper, we study the dual Anomaly flow, which is a dual version of the Anomaly flow under T-duality. A family of monotone functionals is introduced and used to estimate the dilaton function along the flow. Many examples and reductions of the dual Anomaly flow are worked out in detail.

New curvature flows in complex geometry

This is a survey of some of the recent developments on the geometric and analytic aspects of the Anomaly flow. It is a flow of $(2,2)$-forms on a $3$-fold which was originally motivated by string theory and the need to preserve the conformally balanced property of a Hermitian metric in the absence of a $\partial\bar\partial$-Lemma. It has revealed itself since to be a remarkable higher order extension of the Ricci flow. It has also led to several other curvature flows which may be interesting from the point of view of both non-K\"ahler geometry and the theory of non-linear partial differential equations.

A flow of conformally balanced metrics with K\"ahler fixed points

While the Anomaly flow was originally motivated by string theory, its zero slope case is potentially of considerable interest in non-Kahler geometry, as it is a flow of conformally balanced metrics whose stationary points are precisely Kahler metrics. We establish its convergence on Kahler manifolds for suitable initial data. We also discuss its relation to some current problems in complex geometry.

Fu-Yau Hessian Equations

We solve the Fu-Yau equation for arbitrary dimension and arbitrary slope $\alpha'$. Actually we obtain at the same time a solution of the open case $\alpha'>0$, an improved solution of the known case $\alpha'<0$, and solutions for a family of Hessian equations which includes the Fu-Yau equation as a special case. The method is based on the introduction of a more stringent ellipticity condition than the usual $\Gamma_k$ admissible cone condition, and which can be shown to be preserved by precise estimates with scale.

The Anomaly flow over Riemann surfaces

We initiate the study of a new nonlinear parabolic equation on a Riemann surface. The evolution equation arises as a reduction of the Anomaly flow on a fibration. We obtain a criterion for long-time existence for this flow, and give a range of initial data where a singularity forms in finite time, as well as a range of initial data where the solution exists for all time. A geometric interpretation of these results is given in terms of the Anomaly flow on a Calabi-Yau threefold.

The Anomaly flow on unimodular Lie groups

The Hull-Strominger system for supersymmetric vacua of the heterotic string allows general unitary Hermitian connections with torsion and not just the Chern unitary connection. Solutions on unimodular Lie groups exploiting this flexibility were found by T. Fei and S.T. Yau. The Anomaly flow is a flow whose stationary points are precisely the solutions of the Hull-Strominger system. Here we examine its long-time behavior on unimodular Lie groups with general unitary Hermitian connections. We find a diverse and intricate behavior, which depends very much on the Lie group and the initial data.
