Green's function for second order parabolic equations with singular lower order coefficients

We construct Green's functions for second order parabolic operators of the form $Pu=\partial_t u-{\rm div}({\bf A} \nabla u+ \boldsymbol{b}u)+ \boldsymbol{c} \cdot \nabla u+du$ in $(-\infty, \infty) \times Ω$, where $Ω$ is an open connected set in $\mathbb{R}^n$. It is not necessary that $Ω$ to be bounded and $Ω= \mathbb{R}^n$ is not excluded. We assume that the leading coefficients $\bf A$ are bounded and measurable and the lower order coefficients $\boldsymbol{b}$, $\boldsymbol{c}$, and $d$ belong to critical mixed norm Lebesgue spaces and satisfy the conditions $d-{\rm div} \boldsymbol{b} \ge 0$ and ${\rm div}(\boldsymbol{b}-\boldsymbol{c}) \ge 0$. We show that the Green's function has the Gaussian bound in the entire $(-\infty, \infty) \times Ω$.

On $C^{1/2,1}$, $C^{1,2}$, and $C^{0,0}$ estimates for linear parabolic operators

We show that weak solutions to parabolic equations in divergence form with zero Dirichlet boundary conditions are continuously differentiable up to the boundary when the leading coefficients have Dini mean oscillation and the lower order coefficients verify certain conditions. Similar results are obtained for non-divergence form parabolic operators and their adjoint operators. Under similar conditions, we also establish a Harnack inequality for nonnegative adjoint solutions, together with upper and lower Gaussian bounds for the global fundamental solution.

Green's function for second order elliptic equations with singular lower order coefficients

We construct Green's function for second order elliptic operators of the form $Lu=-\nabla \cdot (\mathbf{A} \nabla u + \boldsymbol{b} u)+ \boldsymbol c \cdot \nabla u+ du$ in a domain and obtain pointwise bounds, as well as Lorentz space bounds. We assume that the matrix of principal coefficients $\mathbf A$ is uniformly elliptic and bounded and the lower order coefficients $\boldsymbol{b}$, $\boldsymbol{c}$, and $d$ belong to certain Lebesgue classes and satisfy the condition $d - \nabla \cdot \boldsymbol{b} \ge 0$. In particular, we allow the lower order coefficients to be singular. We also obtain the global pointwise bounds for the gradient of Green's function in the case when the mean oscillations of the coefficients $\mathbf A$ and $\boldsymbol{b}$ satisfy the Dini conditions and the domain is $C^{1, \rm{Dini}}$.

Uniqueness of solutions for Keller-Segel system of porous medium type coupled to fluid equations

We prove the uniqueness of Hölder continuous weak solutions via duality argument and vanishing viscosity method for the Keller-Segel system of porous medium type equations coupled to the Stokes system in dimensions three. An important step is the estimate of the Green function of parabolic equations with lower order terms of variable coefficients, which seems to be of independent interest.

Fundamental solutions for second order parabolic systems with drift terms

We construct fundamental solutions of second-order parabolic systems of divergence form with bounded and measurable leading coefficients and divergence free first-order coefficients in the class of $BMO^{-1}_x$, under the assumption that weak solutions of the system satisfy a certain local boundedness estimate. We also establish Gaussian upper bound for such fundamental solutions under the same conditions.

On $C^1$, $C^2$, and weak type-$(1,1)$ estimates for linear elliptic operators: Part II

We extend and improve the results in \cite{DK16}: showing that weak solutions to full elliptic equations in divergence form with zero Dirichlet boundary conditions are continuously differentiable up to the boundary when the leading coefficients have Dini mean oscillation and the lower order coefficients verify certain conditions. Similar results are obtained for non-divergence form equations. We extend the weak type-(1, 1) estimates in \cite{DK16} and \cite{Es94} up to the boundary and derive a Harnack inequality for non-negative adjoint solutions to non-divergence form elliptic equations, when the leading coefficients have Dini mean oscillation.

Partial Schauder estimates for second-order elliptic and parabolic equations: a revisit

Under various conditions, we establish Schauder estimates for both divergence and non-divergence form second-order elliptic and parabolic equations involving Hölder semi-norms not with respect to all, but only with respect to some of the independent variables. A novelty of our results is that the coefficients are allowed to be merely measurable with respect to the other independent variables.

On $C^1$, $C^2$, and weak type-$(1,1)$ estimates for linear elliptic operators

We show that any weak solution to elliptic equations in divergence form is continuously differentiable provided that the modulus of continuity of coefficients in the $L^1$-mean sense satisfies the Dini condition. This in particular answers a question recently raised by Yanyan Li and allows us to improve a result of Brezis. We also prove a weak type-$(1,1)$ estimate under a stronger assumption on the modulus of continuity. The corresponding results for non-divergence form equations are also established.

A stable and convergent method for Hodge decomposition of fluid-solid interaction

Fluid-solid interaction has been a challenging subject due to their strong nonlinearity and multidisciplinary nature. Many of the numerical methods for solving FSI problems have struggled with non-convergence and numerical instability. In spite of comprehensive studies, it has been still a challenge to develop a method that guarantees both convergence and stability. Our discussion in this work is restricted to the interaction of viscous incompressible fluid flow and a rigid body. We take the monolithic approach by Gibou and Min that results in an extended Hodge projection. The projection updates not only the fluid vector field but also the solid velocities. We derive the equivalence of the extended Hodge projection to the Poisson equation with non-local Robin boundary condition. We prove the existence, uniqueness, and regularity for the weak solution of the Poisson equation, through which the Hodge projection is shown to be unique and orthogonal. Also, we show the stability of the projection in a sense that the projection does not increase the total kinetic energy of fluid and solid. Also, we discusse a numerical method as a discrete analogue to the Hodge projection, then we show that the unique decomposition and orthogonality also hold in the discrete setting. As one of our main results, we prove that the numerical solution is convergent with at least the first order accuracy. We carry out numerical experiments in two and three dimensions, which validate our analysis and arguments.

Regularity of a degenerate parabolic equation appearing in Vecer's unified pricing of Asian options

Vecer derived a degenerate parabolic equation with a boundary condition characterizing the price of Asian options with generally sampled average. It is well understood that there exists a unique probabilistic solution to such a problem but it remained unclear whether the probabilistic solution is a classical solution. We prove that the probabilistic solutions to Vecer's PDE are regular.

Green's functions for elliptic and parabolic systems with Robin-type boundary conditions

The aim of this paper is to investigate Green's function for parabolic and elliptic systems satisfying a possibly nonlocal Robin-type boundary condition. We construct Green's function for parabolic systems with time-dependent coefficients satisfying a possibly nonlocal Robin-type boundary condition assuming that weak solutions of the system are locally Hölder continuous in the interior of the domain, and as a corollary we construct Green's function for elliptic system with a Robin-type condition. Also, we obtain Gaussian bound for Robin Green's function under an additional assumption that weak solutions of Robin problem are locally bounded up to the boundary. We provide some examples satisfying such a local boundedness property, and thus have Gaussian bounds for their Green's functions.

Elliptic systems with measurable coefficients of the type of Lamé system in three dimensions

We study the $3 \times 3$ elliptic systems $\nabla \times (a(x) \nabla\times u)-\nabla (b(x) \nabla \cdot u)=f$, where the coefficients $a(x)$ and $b(x)$ are positive scalar functions that are measurable and bounded away from zero and infinity. We prove that weak solutions of the above system are Hölder continuous under some minimal conditions on the inhomogeneous term $f$. We also present some applications and discuss several related topics including estimates of the Green's functions and the heat kernels of the above systems.

Heat kernel for the elliptic system of linear elasticity with boundary conditions

We consider the elliptic system of linear elasticity with bounded measurable coefficients in a domain where the second Korn inequality holds. We construct heat kernel of the system subject to Dirichlet, Neumann, or mixed boundary condition under the assumption that weak solutions of the elliptic system are Hölder continuous in the interior. Moreover, we show that if weak solutions of the mixed problem are Hölder continuous up to the boundary, then the corresponding heat kernel has a Gaussian bound. In particular, if the domain is a two dimensional Lipschitz domain satisfying a corkscrew or non-tangential accessibility condition on the set where we specify Dirichlet boundary condition, then we show that the heat kernel has a Gaussian bound. As an application, we construct Green's function for elliptic mixed problem in such a domain.

Green's function for second order parabolic systems with Neumann boundary condition

We study the Neumann Green's function for second order parabolic systems in divergence form with time-dependent measurable coefficients in a cylindrical domain $\mathcal{Q}=Ω\times (-\infty,\infty)$, where $Ω\subset \mathbb{R}^n$ is an open connected set such that a multiplicative Sobolev embedding inequality holds there. Such a domain includes, for example, a bounded Sobolev extension domain, a special Lipschitz domain, and an unbounded domain with compact Lipschitz boundary. We construct the Neumann Green's function in $\mathcal{Q}$ under the assumption that weak solutions of the systems satisfy an interior Hölder continuity estimate. We also establish global Gaussian bounds for Neumann Green's function under an additional assumption that weak solutions with zero Neumann data satisfy a local boundedness estimate. In the scalar case, such a local boundedness estimate is a consequence of De Giorgi-Moser-Nash theory holds for equations with bounded measurable coefficients in Sobolev extension domains, while in the vectorial case, one may need to impose further regularity assumptions on the coefficients of the system as well as on the domain to obtain such an estimate. We present a unified approach valid for both the scalar and vectorial cases and discuss some applications of our results including the construction of Neumann functions for second order elliptic systems with measurable coefficients in two dimensional domains.

Harnack inequality for nondivergent parabolic operators on Riemannian manifolds

We consider second-order linear parabolic operators in non-divergence form that are intrinsically defined on Riemannian manifolds. In the elliptic case, Cabré proved a global Krylov-Safonov Harnack inequality under the assumption that the sectional curvature of the underlying manifold is nonnegative. Later, Kim improved Cabré's result by replacing the curvature condition by a certain condition on the distance function. Assuming essentially the same condition introduced by Kim, we establish Krylov-Safonov Harnack inequality for nonnegative solutions of the non-divergent parabolic equation. This, in particular, gives a new proof for Li-Yau Harnack inequality for positive solutions to the heat equation in a manifold with nonnegative Ricci curvature.

Neumann functions for second order elliptic systems with measurable coefficients

We study Neumann functions for divergence form, second order elliptic systems with bounded measurable coefficients in a bounded Lipschitz domain or a Lipschitz graph domain. We establish existence, uniqueness, and various estimates for the Neumann functions under the assumption that weak solutions of the system enjoy interior Hölder continuity. Also, we establish global pointwise bounds for the Neumann functions under the assumption that weak solutions of the system satisfy a certain natural local boundedness estimate. Moreover, we prove that such a local boundedness estimate for weak solutions of the system is in fact equivalent to the global pointwise bound for the Neumann function. We present a unified approach valid for both the scalar and the vectorial cases.
