In situ reduction of charge noise in GaAs/AlGaAs Schottky-gated devices

We show that an insulated electrostatic gate can be used to strongly suppress ubiquitous background charge noise in Schottky-gated GaAs/AlGaAs devices. Via a 2-D self-consistent simulation of the conduction band profile we show that this observation can be explained by reduced leakage of electrons from the Schottky gates into the semiconductor through the Schottky barrier, consistent with the effect of "bias cooling". Upon noise reduction, the noise power spectrum generally changes from Lorentzian to $1/f$ type. By comparing wafers with different Al content, we exclude that DX centers play a dominant role in the charge noise.

Microwave band on-chip coil technique for single electron spin resonance in a quantum dot

Microwave band on-chip microcoils are developed for the application to single electron spin resonance measurement with a single quantum dot. Basic properties such as characteristic impedance and electromagnetic field distribution are examined for various coil designs by means of experiment and simulation. The combined setup operates relevantly in the experiment at dilution temperature. The frequency responses of the return loss and Coulomb blockade current are examined. Capacitive coupling between a coil and a quantum dot causes photon assisted tunneling, whose signal can greatly overlap the electron spin resonance signal. To suppress the photon assisted tunneling effect, a technique for compensating for the microwave electric field is developed. Good performance of this technique is confirmed from measurement of Coulomb blockade oscillations.

Kondo Universal Scaling for a Quantum Dot Coupled to Superconducting Leads

We study competition between the Kondo effect and superconductivity in a single self-assembled InAs quantum dot contacted with Al lateral electrodes. Due to Kondo enhancement of Andreev reflections the zero-bias anomaly develops sidepeaks, separated by the superconducting gap energy Delta. For ten valleys of different Kondo temperature T_K we tune the gap Delta with an external magnetic field. We find that the zero-bias conductance in each case collapses onto a single curve with Delta/kT_K as the only relevant energy scale, providing experimental evidence for universal scaling in this system.

Electron transport through Aharonov-Bohm interferometer with laterally coupled double quantum dots

We theoretically investigate electron transport through an Aharonov-Bohm interferometer containing laterally coupled double quantum dots. We introduce the indirect coupling parameter $α$, which characterizes the strength of the coupling via the reservoirs between two quantum dots. $|α|=1$ indicates the strongest coupling, where only a single mode contributes to the transport in the system. Two conduction modes exist in a system where $|α|\neq 1$. The interference effects such as the Fano resonance and the Aharonov-Bohm oscillation are suppressed as the absolute value of the parameter $α$ decreases from 1. The linear conductance does not depend on the flux when $α=0$ since it corresponds to independent coupling of the dots to the reservoir modes.

Coherent single electron spin control in a slanting Zeeman field

We consider a single electron in a 1D quantum dot with a static slanting Zeeman field. By combining the spin and orbital degrees of freedom of the electron, an effective quantum two-level (qubit) system is defined. This pseudo-spin can be coherently manipulated by the voltage applied to the gate electrodes, without the need for an external time-dependent magnetic field or spin-orbit coupling. Single qubit rotations and the C-NOT operation can be realized. We estimated relaxation ($T_1$) and coherence ($T_{2}$) times, and the (tunable) quality factor. This scheme implies important experimental advantages for single electron spin control.

Nuclear spin induced oscillatory current in spin-blocked quantum dots

Hyperfine coupling of electron spins to nuclear spins is studied for a GaAs-based double quantum dot in the spin blockade regime where the electron conduction is mostly blocked by Pauli effect unless the electron spin state in the double dot is changed. A current flowing through the double dot shows time-dependent oscillations with a period of as long as 200 sec in a certain DC magnetic field range. The oscillatory behavior is significantly diminished by application of an AC magnetic field whose frequency can induce nuclear magnetic resonance for 71Ga and 69Ga, respectively. A possible nuclear spin polarization mechanism due to hyperfine flip-flop scattering is proposed.

Allowed and forbidden transitions in artificial hydrogen and helium atoms

The strength of radiative transitions in atoms is governed by selection rules. Spectroscopic studies of allowed transitions in hydrogen and helium provided crucial evidence for the Bohr's model of an atom. Forbidden transitions, which are actually allowed by higher-order processes or other mechanisms, indicate how well the quantum numbers describe the system. We apply these tests to the quantum states in semiconductor quantum dots (QDs), which are regarded as artificial atoms. Electrons in a QD occupy quantized states in the same manner as electrons in real atoms. However, unlike real atoms, the confinement potential of the QD is anisotropic, and the electrons can easily couple with phonons of the material. Understanding the selection rules for such QDs is an important issue for the manipulation of quantum states. Here we investigate allowed and forbidden transitions for phonon emission in one- and two-electron QDs (artificial hydrogen and helium atoms) by electrical pump-and-probe experiments, and find that the total spin is an excellent quantum number in artificial atoms. This is attractive for potential applications to spin based information storage.

Non-equilibrium transport through a vertical quantum dot in the absence of spin-flip energy relaxation

We investigate non-equilibrium transport in the absence of spin-flip energy relaxation in a few-electron quantum dot artificial atom. Novel non-equilibrium tunneling processes involving high-spin states which cannot be excited from the ground state because of spin-blockade, and other processes involving more than two charge states are observed. These processes cannot be explained by orthodox Coulomb blockade theory. The absence of effective spin relaxation induces considerable fluctuation of the spin, charge, and total energy of the quantum dot. Although these features are revealed clearly by pulse excitation measurements, they are also observed in conventional dc current characteristics of quantum dots.

Precursors of Mott insulator in modulated quantum wires

We investigate the transport of interacting electrons through single-mode quantum wires whose parameters are periodically modulated on the scale of the electronic Fermi wave length. The Umklapp and backscattering of electrons can be described in terms of non-uniform quantum sine-Gordon-like models which also incorporate the effects of electronic reservoirs (electrodes) adiabatically coupled to the wire. We concentrate on weak Umklapp scattering and analyze the precursors of the Mott transition. At half-filling the temperature dependence of the extra resistance $ΔR = R - π\hbar/e^2$ of a modulated quantum wire of length $L$ changes from the interaction-dependent "bulk" power-law $ΔR \propto T^{4K_ρ-3}$ at high temperatures, $T \gg v_ρ/L$, to the universal $ΔR \propto T^2$ behavior at low temperatures, $T \ll v_ρ/L$. Away from half-filling the "bulk" results are qualitatively incorrect even at high temperatures $v_ρ/L \ll T \ll T^{*}$ despite the electron coherence in the wire is absent in this regime.
