Supersymmetry Breaking in a Large N Gauge Theory with Gravity Dual

We study phase structure of mass-deformed ABJM theory which is a three dimensional $\mathcal{N}=6$ superconformal theory deformed by mass parameters and has the gauge group $\text{U}(N)\times \text{U}(N)$ with Chern-Simons levels $(k,-k)$ which may have a gravity dual. We discuss that the mass deformed ABJM theory on $S^3$ breaks supersymmetry in a large-$N$ limit if the mass is larger than a critical value. To see some evidence for this conjecture, we compute the partition function exactly, and numerically by using the Monte Carlo Simulation for small $N$. We discover that the partition function has zeroes as a function of the mass deformation parameters if $N\ge k$, which supports the large-$N$ supersymmetry breaking. We also find a solution to the large-$N$ saddle point equations, where the free energy is consistent with the finite $N$ result.

Geometry from Matrices via D-branes

In this paper, we give a map from matrices to a commutative geometry from a bound state of a D2-brane and N D0-branes. For this, tachyons in auxiliary unstable D-brane system describing the bound state play crucial roles. We found the map obtained in this way coincides with the recent proposals. We also consider the map from the geometry to matrices in a large N limit and argue that the map is a matrix regularization of geometry.

Spherical transverse M5-branes from the plane wave matrix model

We consider matrix theoretical description of transverse M5-branes in M-theory on the 11-dimensional maximally supersymmetric pp-wave background. We apply the localization to the plane wave matrix model (PWMM) and show that the transverse spherical fivebranes with zero light cone energy in M-theory are realized as the distribution of low energy moduli of the $SO(6)$ scalar fields in PWMM.

AdS/CFT Correspondence in Operator Formalism

In this paper we study the AdS/CFT correspondence in the operator formalism without assuming the GKPW relation. We explicitly show that the low energy spectrum of the large N limit of CFT, which is realized by a strong coupling gauge theory, is identical to the spectrum of the free gravitational theory in the global AdS spacetime under some assumptions which are expected to be valid. Thus, two theories are equivalent for the low energy region under the assumptions. Using this equivalence, the bulk local field is constructed and the GKPW relation is derived.

A Note on Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev Like Model without Random Coupling

We study a description of the large N limit of the Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev (SYK) model in terms of quantum mechanics without quenched disorder. Instead of random couplings, we introduce massive scalar fields coupled to fermions, and study a small mass limit of the theory. We show that, under a certain condition, the correlation functions of fermions reproduce those of the SYK model with a temperature dependent coupling constant in the large N limit. We also discuss a supersymmetric generalization of our quantum mechanical model. As a byproduct, we develop an efficient way of estimating the large N behavior of correlators in the SYK model.

On the transverse M5-branes in matrix theory

It has been a long-standing problem how the transverse M5-branes are described in the matrix-model formulations of M-theory. We consider this problem for M-theory on the maximally supersymmetric pp-wave geometry, which admits transverse spherical M5-branes with zero light-cone energy. By using the localization, we directly analyze the strong coupling region of the corresponding matrix theory called the plane wave matrix model (PWMM). Under the assumption that the low energy modes of the scalar fields in PWMM become mutually commuting in the strong coupling region, we show that the eigenvalue density of the $SO(6)$ scalars in the low energy region exactly agrees with the shape of the spherical M5-branes in the decoupling limit. This result gives a strong evidence that the transverse M5-branes are indeed contained in the matrix theory and the theory realizes a second quantization of the M-theory.

Mass Deformed ABJM Theory on Three Sphere in Large N limit

In this paper the free energy of the mass deformed ABJM theory on S^3 in the large N limit is studied. We find a new solution of the large N saddle point equation which exists for an arbitrary value of the mass parameter, and compute the free energies for these solutions. We also show that the solution corresponding to an asymptotically AdS_4 geometry is singular at a certain value of the mass parameter and does not exist over this critical value. It is not clear what the gravity dual of the mass deformed ABJM theory on S^3 for the mass parameter larger than the critical value is.

Exact Path Integral for 3D Higher Spin Gravity

Extending the works arXiv:1504.05991 and arXiv:1510.02142, we study three dimensional Euclidean higher spin gravity with negative cosmological constant. This theory can be formulated in terms of SL(N,C) Chern-Simons theory. By introducing auxiliary fields, we rewrite it in a supersymmetric way and compute its partition function exactly by using the localization method. We obtain a good expression for the partition function in terms of characters for the vacuum and primaries in 2D unitary CFT with W_N symmetry. We also check that the coefficients of the character expansion are positive integers and exhibit Cardy formula in the large central charge limit.

Large N behavior of mass deformed ABJM theory

In this paper, using the localization technique we analyze the large N limit of the mass deformed Aharony-Bergman-Jafferis-Maldacena (ABJM) theory on the three sphere with a finite mass parameter and finite Chern-Simons levels. We find two different solutions of the saddle point equations in the large N limit. With these solutions we compute the free energy and find that there is a first order phase transition. Our results may predict a phase transition in the dual gravity theory.

A Nonperturbative Proof of Dijkgraaf-Vafa Conjecture

In this note we exactly compute the gaugino condensation of an arbitrary four dimensional N=1 supersymmetric gauge theory in confining phase, using the localization technique. This result gives a nonperturbative proof of the Dijkgraaf-Vafa conjecture.

Exact Path Integral for 3D Quantum Gravity II

Continuing the work arXiv:1504.05991, we discuss various aspects of three dimensional quantum gravity partition function in AdS in the semi-classical limit. The partition function is holomorphic and is the one which we obtained by using the localization technique of Chern-Simons theory in arXiv:1504.05991. We obtain a good expression for it in the summation form over Virasoro characters for the vacuum and primaries. A key ingredient for that is an interpretation of boundary localized fermion. We also check that the coefficients in the summation form over Virasoro characters of the partition function are positive integers and satisfy the Cardy formula. These give physical interpretation that these coefficients represent the number of primary fields in the dual CFT in the large k limit.

Exact Path Integral for 3D Quantum Gravity

Three dimensional Euclidean pure gravity with a negative cosmological constant can be formulated in terms of the Chern-Simons theory, classically. This theory can be written in a supersymmetric way by introducing auxiliary gauginos and scalars. We calculate the exact partition function of this Chern-Simons theory by using the localization technique. Thus, we obtain the quantum gravity partition function, assuming that it can be obtained non-perturbatively by summing over partition functions of the Chern-Simons theory on topologically different manifolds. The resultant partition function is modular invariant, and in the case in which the central charge is expected to be 24, it is the J-function, predicted by Witten.

In this note we show that the gaugino condensation of 4d N=1 supersymmetric gauge theories in the confining phase can be computed by the localization technique with an appropriate choice of a supersymmetry generator.

Ramond-Ramond couplings of D-branes

Applying supersymmetric localization for superstring worldsheet theory with N=(1,1) supersymmetries on a cylinder and with arbitrary boundary interactions, we find the most general formula for the Ramond-Ramond (RR) coupling of D-branes. We allow all massive excitations of open superstrings, and find that only a finite number of them can contribute to the formula. The formula is written by Quillen's superconnection which includes higher form gauge fields, and the resultant general Chern-Simons terms are consistent with RR charge quantization. Applying the formula to boundary string field theory of a BPS D9-brane or a D9-antiD9 brane system, we find that any D9-brane creation via massive mode condensation is impossible.

Brick Walls for Black Holes in AdS/CFT

We study the 't Hooft's brick wall model for black holes in a holographic context. The brick wall model suggests that without an appropriate near horizon IR cut-off, the free energy of the probe fields show the divergence due to the large degenerate states near the horizons. After studying the universal nature of the divergence in various holographic setting in various dimensions, we interpret the nature of the divergence in a holographic context. The free energy divergence is due to the large degeneracy and continuity of the low energy spectrum in the boundary theory at the deconfinement phase. These divergence and continuity should be removed by finite N effects, which make the spectrum discrete even at the deconfinement phase. On the other hand, in the bulk, these degenerate states are localized near the horizon, and the universal divergence of these degenerate states implies that the naive counting of the degrees of freedom in bulk should be modified once we take into account the non-perturbative quantum gravity effects near the horizon. Depending on the microscopic degrees of freedom, the position, where the effective field theory description to count the states breaks down, has different Planck scale dependence. It also implies the difficulty to have an electron like gauge-singlet elementary field in the boundary theory Lagrangian. These singlet fields are at most composite fields, because they show divergent free energy, suggesting a positive power of N at the deconfinement phase.

On Supersymmetric Gauge Theories on S^4 x S^1

We construct supersymmetric gauge theory on S^4 x S^1. We find a consistent supersymmetry transformations which reduced to the 4D N=2 supersymmetry transformation studied by Pestun by the dimensional reduction on S^1. We find there is no analogue of the usual Yang-Mills action except in the 4D limit. We also apply the localization technique to the partition function of the theories.

Supersymmetric Gauge Theories on a Squashed Four-Sphere

We define a squashed four-sphere by a dimensional reduction of a twisted S^4 x S^1, and construct explicitly a supersymmetric Yang-Mills action on it. The action includes a non-trivial dilaton factor and a theta term with a non-constant theta. The partition function of this theory is calculated using the localization technique. The resulting partition function can be written in the form consistent with the AGT relation due to the non-constant theta term. The parameter b which characterizes the partition function in this form is not restricted to be real for the squashed four-sphere.

Integrability of BPS equations in ABJM theory

We investigate BPS equations which determine the configuration of an M2-M5 bound state preserving half of the supersymmetries in the ABJM theory. We argue that the BPS equations are classically integrable, showing that they admit a Lax representation. The integrable structure of the BPS equations is closely related to that of the Nahm equations. Using this relation we formulate an efficient way of constructing solutions of the BPS equations from those of the Nahm equations. As an illustration of our method, we construct explicitly the most general solutions describing two M2-branes suspended between two parallel M5-branes as well as two semi-infinite M2-branes ending on an M5-brane. These include previously unknown new solutions. We also discuss a reduction of the BPS equations in connection with the periodic Toda chain.
