Electronic specific heat and low energy quasiparticle excitations in superconducting state of $La_{2-x}Sr_xCuO_4$ single crystals

Low temperature specific heat has been measured and extensively analyzed on a series of $La_{2-x}Sr_xCuO_4$ single crystals from underdoped to overdoped regime. From these data the quasiparticle density of states (DOS) in the mixed state is derived and compared to the predicted scaling law $C_{vol}/T\sqrt{H}=f(T/\sqrt{H})$ of d-wave superconductivity. It is found that the scaling law can be nicely followed by the optimally doped sample (x=0.15) in quite wide region of ($T/\sqrt{H} \leq 8 K /\sqrt{T}$). However, the region for this scaling becomes smaller and smaller towards more underdoped region: a clear trend can be seen for samples from x=0.15 to 0.069. Therefore, generally speaking, the scaling quality becomes worse on the underdoped samples in terms of scalable region of $T/\sqrt{H}$. This feature in the underdoped region is explained as due to the low energy excitations from a second order (for example, anti-ferromagnetic correlation, d-density wave, spin density wave or charge density wave order) that may co-exist or compete with superconductivity. Surprisingly, deviations from the d-wave scaling law have also been found for the overdoped sample (x=0.22). While the scaling law is reconciled for the overdoped sample when the core size effect is taken into account. An important discovery of present work is that the zero-temperature data follow the Volovik's relation $Δγ(T=0)=A\sqrt{H}$ quite well for all samples investigated here although the applicability of the d-wave scaling law to the data at finite temperatures varies with doped hole concentration. Finally we present the doping dependence of some parameters, such as, the residual linear term $γ_0$, the $α$ value, etc. ...

"Spin-Flop" Transition and Anisotropic Magnetoresistance in Pr_{1.3-x}La_{0.7}Ce_{x}CuO_{4}: Unexpectedly Strong Spin-Charge Coupling in Electron-Doped Cuprates

We use transport and neutron-scattering measurements to show that a magnetic-field-induced transition from noncollinear to collinear spin arrangement in adjacent CuO_{2} planes of lightly electron-doped Pr_{1.3-x}La_{0.7}Ce_{x}CuO_{4} (x=0.01) crystals affects significantly both the in-plane and out-of-plane resistivity. In the high-field collinear state, the magnetoresistance (MR) does not saturate, but exhibits an intriguing four-fold-symmetric angular dependence, oscillating from being positive at B//[100] to being negative at B//[110]. The observed MR of more than 30% at low temperatures induced by a modest modification of the spin structure indicates an unexpectedly strong spin-charge coupling in electron-doped cuprates.

Fully Gapped Single-Particle Excitations in the Lightly Doped Cuprates

The low-energy excitations of the lightly doped cuprates were studied by angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy. A finite gap was measured over the entire Brillouin zone, including along the d_{x^2 - y^2} nodal line. This effect was observed to be generic to the normal states of numerous cuprates, including hole-doped La_{2-x}Sr_{x}CuO_{4} and Ca_{2-x}Na_{x}CuO_{2}Cl_{2} and electron-doped Nd_{2-x}Ce_{x}CuO_{4}. In all compounds, the gap appears to close with increasing carrier doping. We consider various scenarios to explain our results, including the possible effects of chemical disorder, electronic inhomogeneity, and a competing phase.

Thermal Conductivity of Pr_{1.3-x}La_{0.7}Ce_xCuO_4 Single Crystals and Signatures of Stripes in an Electron-Doped Cuprate

It was recently demonstrated that the anisotropic phonon heat transport behavior is a good probe of the stripe formation in La_{2-x}Sr_xCuO_4 (LSCO) [X. F. Sun {\it et al.}, Phys. Rev. B {\bf 67}, 104503 (2003)]. Using this probe, we examined an electron-doped cuprate Pr_{1.3-x}La_{0.7}Ce_xCuO_4 (PLCCO) and found that essentially the same features as those in LSCO are observed. Moreover, the in-plane resistivity ρ_{ab} of lightly-doped PLCCO shows metallic behavior (dρ_{ab}/dT > 0) in the Néel ordered state with a mobility comparable to that in LSCO. It is discussed that these peculiar properties in common with LSCO signify the existence of stripes in electron-doped cuprates.

Heat transport of La$_{2-y}$Eu$_y$CuO$_4$ and La$_{1.88-y}$Eu$_y$Sr$_{0.12}$CuO$_4$ single crystals

To study the rare-earth doping effect on the phonon heat transport of La-based cuprates and shed light on the mechanism of phonon scattering, both $ab$-plane and c-axis thermal conductivities ($κ_{ab}$ and $κ_c$) are measured for La$_{2-y}$Eu$_y$CuO$_4$ ($y$ = 0, 0.02 and 0.2) and La$_{1.88-y}$Eu$_y$Sr$_{0.12}$CuO$_4$ ($y$ = 0 and 0.2) single crystals. It is found that the phonon peak (at 20 -- 25 K) in $κ_{ab}(T)$ of La$_{2-y}$Eu$_y$CuO$_4$ shows an anomalous Eu-doping dependence: it completely disappears for $y$ = 0.02, which is discussed to be due to the local lattice distortions around Eu dopants, and reappears for $y$ = 0.2 with much smaller peak magnitude compared to $y$ = 0 sample. In contrast to the strong suppression of the phonon peak in Eu-doped La$_2$CuO$_4$, Eu-doping to La$_{1.88}$Sr$_{0.12}$CuO$_4$ enhances the low-$T$ phonon heat transport that results in the reappearance of the phonon peak in this charge-carrier-doped system. The data clearly show that the establishment of static stripe phase rather than the structural change is responsible for the reappearance of phonon peak.

Anisotropic Magnetoresistance in Lightly Doped La_{2-x}Sr_{x}CuO_{4}: Impact of Anti-Phase Domain Boundaries on the Electron Transport

Detailed behavior of the magnetoresistance (MR) is studied in lightly doped antiferromagnetic La_{1.99}Sr_{0.01}CuO_{4}, where, thanks to the weak ferromagnetic moment due to spin canting, the antiferromagnetic (AF) domain structure can be manipulated by the magnetic field. The MR behavior demonstrates that CuO_2 planes indeed contain anti-phase AF domain boundaries in which charges are confined, forming anti-phase stripes. The data suggest that a high magnetic field turns the anti-phase stripes into in-phase stripes, and the latter appear to give better conduction than the former, which challenges the notion that the anti-phase character of stripes facilitates charge motion.

Peculiar roles of spins in the thermal conductivity of pure and doped La_{2}CuO_{4}: Comparison with CuGeO_{3}

In-plane and out-of-plane thermal conductivities (κ_{ab} and κ_{c}) are measured on single crystals of pure, 1%-hole-doped, and 1%-Zn-doped La_{2}CuO_{4}. The roles of magnons and the spin stripes in the heat transport in these samples are discussed. Comparison with the heat transport in CuGeO_{3}, which shows similar κ(T) behavior as that of La_{2}CuO_{4}, gives us a lesson of how the heat transport can probe the difference in the spin ground state.

Magnetic-Field-Induced Localization of Quasiparticles in Underdoped La$_{2-x}$Sr$_x$CuO$_4$ Single Crystals

Magnetic-field-induced ordering of electrons around vortices is a striking phenomenon recently found in high-$T_c$ cuprates. To identify its consequence in the quasiparticle dynamics, the magnetic-field ($H$) dependence of the low-temperature thermal conductivity $κ$ of La$_{2-x}$Sr$_x$CuO$_4$ crystals is studied for a wide doping range. It is found that the behavior of $κ(H)$ in the sub-Kelvin region changes drastically across optimum doping, and the data for underdoped samples are indicative of unusual magnetic-field-induced localization of quasiparticles; this localization phenomenon is probably responsible for the unusual "insulating normal state" under high magnetic fields.

Significant suppression of weak ferromagnetism in (La${}_{1.8}$Eu${}_{0.2}$)CuO${}_4$

The magnetic structure of (La${}_{1.8}$Eu${}_{0.2}$)CuO${}_4$ has been studied by magnetization measurements of single crystals, which show antiferromagnetic long-range order below $T_N$ = 265 K and a structural phase transition at $T_s$ = 130 K. At $T_s < T < T_N$, the Cu spin susceptibility exhibits almost the same behavior as that of La${}_2$CuO${}_4$ in the low-temperature orthorhombic phase, which indicates the existence of finite spin canting out of the CuO${}_2$ plane. At $T < T_s$, the magnitude of the weak-ferromagnetic moment induced by the spin canting is suppressed approximately by 70{%}. This significant suppression of the weak-ferromagnetic moment is carefully compared with the theoretical analysis of weak ferromagnetism by Stein {\it et al.} (Phys. Rev. B {\bf 53}, 775 (1996)), in which the magnitude of weak-ferromagnetic moments strongly depend on the crystallographic symmetry. Based on such comparison, below $T_s$ (La${}_{1.8}$Eu${}_{0.2}$)CuO${}_4$ is in the low-temperature less-orthorhombic phase with a space group of $Pccn$. We also discuss the possible magnetic structure of the pure low-temperature tetragonal phase with space group $P4_2/{ncm}$, which is relevant for rare-earth and alkaline-earth ions co-doped La${}_2$CuO${}_4$.

Core Size Effect on the Vortex Quasiparticle Excitations in Overdoped $La_{2-x}Sr_xCuO_4$ Single Crystals

Low temperature specific heat has been measured for an overdoped $La_{2-x}Sr_xCuO_4$ (x = 0.22) single crystal. The quasiparticle density of states (DOS) in the mixed state is found to deviate from the predicted scaling law $C_{vol}=Hf(T/H^{1/2})$. However, this scaling behavior is nicely reconciled if one considers the normal core region ($ξ\approx$ 21$Å$) which gives small contribution to the total DOS. The radius of the core and other parameters derived are consistent with reported values. Our results suggest that there is no zero-bias conductance peak (ZBCP), which is predicted by the simple Bogoliubov de-Gennes theory in the vortex core of a d-wave superconductor.

Thermal conductivity of lightly Sr- and Zn-doped La$_2$CuO$_4$ single crystals

Both ab-plane and c-axis thermal conductivities ($κ_{ab}$ and $κ_c$) of lightly doped La$_{2-x}$Sr$_x$CuO$_4$ and La$_2$Cu$_{1-y}$Zn$_y$O$_4$ single crystals ($x$ or $y$ = 0 -- 0.04) are measured from 2 to 300 K. It is found that the low-temperature phonon peak (at 20 -- 25 K) is significantly suppressed upon Sr or Zn doping even at very low doping, though its precise doping dependences show interesting differences between the Sr and Zn dopants, or between the $ab$ plane and the c axis. Most notably, the phonon peak in $κ_c$ decreases much more quickly with Sr doping than with Zn doping, while the phonon-peak suppression in $κ_{ab}$ shows an opposite trend. It is discussed that the scattering of phonons by stripes is playing an important role in the damping of the phonon heat transport in lightly doped LSCO, in which static spin stripes has been observed by neutron scattering. We also show $κ_{ab}$ and $κ_c$ data of La$_{1.28}$Nd$_{0.6}$Sr$_{0.12}$CuO$_4$ and La$_{1.68}$Eu$_{0.2}$Sr$_{0.12}$CuO$_4$ single crystals to compare with the data of the lightly doped crystals for the discussion of the role of stripes. At high temperature, the magnon peak (i.e., the peak caused by the spin heat transport near the Néel temperature) in $κ_{ab}(T)$ is found to be rather robust against Zn doping, while it completely disappears with only 1% of Sr doping.

Charge Transport Properties of Lightly-Doped Cuprates: Behavior of the Hall Coefficient

Behavior of ρ_{ab}(T) and R_{H}(T) is presented for LSCO and YBCO single crystals in the lightly hole-doped antiferromagnetic region, with an emphasis on the R_{H}(T) data. In both systems, R_{H} is virtually constant at moderate temperatures and tends to increase at low temperatures. Since essentially the same behavior of ρ_{ab}(T) and R_{H}(T) is observed in both LSCO and YBCO, we discuss that the in-plane charge transport properties are universal among the cuprates in the lightly-doped regime and that the R_{H}(T) data we obtained represent the genuine behavior of the Hall effect in this regime.

Magnetic shape-memory effects in La2-xSrxCuO4 crystals

The magnetic field affects the motion of electrons and the orientation of spins in solids, but it is believed to have little impact on the crystal structure. This common perception has been challenged recently by ferromagnetic shape-memory alloys, where the spin-lattice coupling is so strong that crystallographic axes even in a fixed sample are forced to rotate, following the direction of moments. One would, however, least expect any structural change to be induced in antiferromagnets where spins are antiparallel and give no net moment. Here we report on such unexpected magnetic shape-memory effects that take place ironically in one of the best-studied 2D antiferromagnets, La2-xSrxCuO4 (LSCO). We find that lightly-doped LSCO crystals tend to align their b axis along the magnetic field, and if the crystal orientation is fixed, this alignment occurs through the generation and motion of crystallographic twin boundaries. Both resistivity and magnetic susceptibility exhibit curious switching and memory effects induced by the crystal-axes rotation; moreover, clear kinks moving over the crystal surfaces allow one to watch the crystal rearrangement directly with a microscope or even bare eyes.

An Infrared study of the Josephson vortex state in high-Tc cuprates

We report the results of the c-axis infrared spectroscopy of La_{2-x} Sr_x CuO_4 in high magnetic field oriented parallel to the CuO_2 planes. A significant suppression of the superfluid density with magnetic field rho_s(H) is observed for both underdoped (x=0.125) and overdoped (x=0.17) samples. We show that the existing theoretical models of the Josephson vortex state fail to consistently describe the observed effects and discuss possible reasons for the discrepancies.

c-Axis Transport and Resistivity Anisotropy of Lightly- to Moderately-Doped La_{2-x}Sr_{x}CuO_{4} Single Crystals: Implications on the Charge Transport Mechanism

Both the in-plane and the out-of-plane resistivities (ρ_{ab} and ρ_{c}) are measured in high-quality La_{2-x}Sr_{x}CuO_{4} (LSCO) single crystals in the lightly- to moderately-doped region, x = 0.01 to 0.10, and the resistivity anisotropy is determined. In all the samples studied, the anisotropy ratio ρ_{c}/ρ_{ab} quickly increases with decreasing temperature, although in non-superconducting samples the strong localization effect causes ρ_{c}/ρ_{ab} to decrease at low temperatures. Most notably, it is found that ρ_{c}/ρ_{ab} at moderate temperatures (100 - 300 K) is almost completely independent of doping in the non-superconducting regime (x = 0.01 to 0.05); this indicates that the same charge confinement mechanism that renormalizes the c-axis hopping rate is at work down to x = 0.01. It is discussed that this striking x-independence of ρ_{c}/ρ_{ab} is consistent with the idea that holes form a self-organized network of hole-rich regions, which also explains the unusually metallic in-plane transport of the holes in the lightly-doped region. Furthermore, the data for x > 0.05 suggest that the emergence of the superconductivity is related to an increase in the c-axis coupling.

Low-temperature electronic heat transport in La_{2-x}Sr_{x}CuO_{4} single crystals: Unusual low-energy physics in the normal and superconducting states

The thermal conductivity κis measured in a series of La_{2-x}Sr_{x}CuO_{4} (x = 0 - 0.22) single crystals down to 90 mK to elucidate the evolution of the residual electronic thermal conductivity κ_{res}, which probes the extended quasiparticle states in the d-wave gap. We found that κ_{res}/T grows smoothly, except for a 1/8 anomaly, above x = 0.05 and shows no discontinuity at optimum doping, indicating that the behavior of κ_{res}/T is not governed by the metal-insulator crossover in the normal state; as a result, κ_{res}/T is much larger than what the normal-state resistivity would suggest in the underdoped region, which highlights the peculiarities in the low-energy physics in the cuprates.

Electrical Resistivity Anisotropy from Self-Organized One-Dimensionality in High-Temperature Superconductors

We investigate the manifestation of the stripes in the in-plane resistivity anisotropy in untwinned single crystals of La_{2-x}Sr_{x}CuO_{4} (x = 0.02 - 0.04) and YBa_{2}Cu_{3}O_{y} (y = 6.35 - 7.0). It is found that both systems show strongly temperature-dependent in-plane anisotropy in the lightly hole-doped region and that the anisotropy in YBa_{2}Cu_{3}O_{y} grows with decreasing y below about 6.60 despite the decreasing orthorhombicity, which gives most direct evidence that electrons self-organize into a macroscopically anisotropic state. The transport is found to be easier along the direction of the spin stripes already reported, demonstrating that the stripes are intrinsically conducting in cuprates.
