A Crank-Nicolson type minimization scheme for a hyperbolic free boundary problem

We consider a hyperbolic free boundary problem by means of minimizing time discretized functionals of Crank-Nicolson type. The feature of this functional is that it enjoys energy conservation in the absence of free boundaries, which is an essential property for numerical calculations. The existence and regularity of minimizers is shown and an energy estimate is derived. These results are then used to show the existence of a weak solution to the free boundary problem in the 1-dimensional setting.

Stochastic moving particle semi-implicit for inviscid fluid wave simulation

The present paper introduces stochastic velocity as improvement for moving particle semi-implicit (MPS) method. This improvement is to overcome energy loss caused by numerical dissipation in the basic MPS that brings about rapid decay of waves. Stochastic velocity is added in the explicit step of the basic MPS method. MPS with stochastic improvement is compared with the basic method in the case of linear water waves, in particular dam break problem and standing wave in a rectangular tank. Surface detection and curve fitting are used to analyze the parameters of wave on the standing wave case. The surface detection and curved fitting was efficient to determine parameters of the wave and it was found that the stochastic improvement made the waves survived longer than in the basis method.

A variational method for multiphase area-preserving interface motions

We develop a numerical method for realizing mean curvature motion of interfaces separating multiple phases, whose areas are preserved throughout time. The foundation of the method is a thresholding algorithm of the Bence-Merriman-Osher type. The original algorithm is reformulated in a vector setting, which allows for a natural inclusion of constraints, even in the multiphase case. Moreover, a new method for overcoming the inaccuracy of thresholding methods on non-adaptive grids is designed, since this inaccuracy becomes especially prominent in area-preserving motions. Formal analysis of the method and numerical tests are presented.
