Evading Cosmological Strong Coupling in Non-minimally Coupled Vector Gravity

Recent analyses of Proca theories with non-minimal curvature couplings have uncovered an additional scalar degree of freedom with an identically vanishing propagation speed, $c_s^2=0$, signaling a scale-dependent strong-coupling problem. In this {\it Letter}, we show that an additional derivative interaction can lift this zero-speed degeneracy and restore a non-degenerate quadratic dynamics for the scalar perturbations. In an open region of parameter space, the scalar kinetic matrix is positive definite and the high-frequency propagation speeds are real and positive. At quadratic order, this removes the specific signature of strong coupling associated with the $c_s^2=0$ mode. We also uncover a non-uniform limit as the temporal vector condensate approaches zero: at fixed nonzero $A_0$, the formal extreme-ultraviolet regime develops a ghost, while the kinetic structure of the exactly vanishing-condensate branch is different. The momentum scale at which this ghost appears is pushed toward increasingly high values as $A_0\to0$. Whether the ghost scale ultimately lies above the EFT cutoff depends on an independent determination of the EFT cutoff. Finally, we identify a stable de Sitter fixed point with $A_0\neq0$, surrounded by a finite region in which the scalar no-ghost and high-frequency stability conditions remain satisfied.

Cosmological Bounds on Scotogenic Model with Asymmetric Mediator

We study cosmological constraints on the asymmetric mediator scenario, a variant of the scotogenic model that addresses the origins of neutrino masses, dark matter (DM), and the baryon asymmetry. An SU(2)$_L$ doublet scalar $η$ mediates between the visible and dark sectors, while a singlet scalar $σ$ serves as the DM candidate. We evaluate the DM relic abundance by solving the Boltzmann equations including $η$ decay and scattering processes prior to the freeze-out of the $η$ asymmetry, and show Big Bang nucleosynthesis constraints from late-time $η$ decays. Combining the DM abundance and BBN bounds, we find the favored parameter space of this model, for instance, the mediator masses of $m_η\lesssim \mathcal{O}(10)$ TeV.

Explosive production of Higgs particles and implications for heavy dark matter

It is widely believed that the parameter space for Higgs-portal dark matter that achieves the relic abundance through thermal freeze-out has already been tightly constrained, typically at masses on the order of ${\cal O}(10-100)$ GeV. We point out the possibility that the multiple Higgs production due to its self-interaction dramatically changes this picture. We show that the multiplicity can be as large as ${\cal O}(200)$ for the parameters of the Standard Model Higgs, independently of the kinematics of the particle production process. Consequently, heavy Higgs-portal dark matter of $m_χ\gtrsim{\cal O}(1)$ TeV can achieve the required relic abundance in the same mechanism with that for canonical weakly interacting massive particle models.

QCD preheating: New frontier of baryogenesis

We find that QCD can create the cosmological matter abundance via out-of-equilibrium processes during the QCD phase transition, that is what we call the QCD preheating, where the dynamic transition of the QCD vacuum characterized by the quark condensate takes place instantaneously. This mechanism works when the Universe undergoes subsequent supercooled QCD transition. We also find that the QCD preheating can work to create the baryon asymmetry of the Universe if there is the new physics communicated with QCD. These are new pictures of the thermal history around the QCD-phase transition epoch, and thus the dynamic aspect of the QCD vacuum opens a new frontier to explore low-scale matter generation such as baryogenesis. Pursuing the QCD reheating era would also help deeply understanding the subatomic-scale physics in the thermal history of the Universe.

Boltzmann equation and its cosmological applications

We review the derivation of the Boltzmann equation and its cosmological applications in this paper. The derivation of the Boltzmann equation, especially the collision term, is discussed in detail in the language of the quantum field theory without any assumption of the finite temperature system. We also discuss the integrated Boltzmann equation with the deal of the temperature parameter as an extension of the standard equation. Among a number of its cosmological applications, we mainly target two familiar examples, the dynamics of the dark matter abundance through the freeze-out/in process and a baryogenesis scenario. The formulations in those systems are briefly discussed with techniques in their calculations.

The Exact WKB analysis and the Stokes phenomena of the Unruh effect and Hawking radiation

The physical observables of quantum theory can be described by perturbation theory, which is often given by diverging power series. This divergence is connected to the existence of non-perturbative phenomena, where resurgence allows us to study this connection. Applying this idea to the WKB expansion, the exact WKB analysis gives a clear connection to non-perturbative phenomena. In this paper, we apply the exact WKB analysis to the Unruh effect and Hawking radiation. The mechanism we found in this paper is similar to the Schwinger effect of a constant electric field, where the background is static but the Stokes phenomenon appears in the temporal part. Comparing this with a sonic black hole, our calculations show a clear discrepancy between them. Then, we briefly explain how quantum backreactions can be included in the exact WKB formalism.

The Exact WKB analysis for asymmetric scalar preheating

Using the exact WKB analysis of the higher-order differential equations, we analyze the asymmetry in dynamical particle production of a complex scalar field. The solution requires the Stokes phenomena of the fourth-order differential equation. We found that the interference of different types of the Stokes phenomena causes matter-antimatter asymmetry. We also showed a specific example where asymmetry is forbidden in the exact calculation, but a false asymmetry appears in the perturbative expansion.

The Exact WKB and the Landau-Zener transition for asymmetry in cosmological particle production

Cosmological particle production by a time-dependent scalar field is common in cosmology. We focus on the mechanism of asymmetry production when interaction explicitly violates symmetry and its motion is rapid enough to create particles by itself. Combining the exact WKB analysis and the Landau-Zener transition, we point out that perturbation before the non-perturbative analysis may drastically change the structure of the Stokes lines of the theory. The Exact WKB can play an important role in avoiding such discrepancies.

The exact WKB for cosmological particle production

The Bogoliubov transformation in cosmological particle production can be explained by the Stokes phenomena of the corresponding ordinary differential equation. The calculation becomes very simple as far as the solution is described by a special function. Otherwise, the calculation requires more tactics, where the Exact WKB (EWKB) may be a powerful tool. Using the EWKB, we discuss cosmological particle production focusing on the effect of more general interaction and classical scattering. The classical scattering appears when the corresponding scattering problem of the Schrödinger equation develops classical turning points on the trajectory. The higher process of fermionic preheating is also discussed using the Landau-Zener model.

Leptogenesis due to oscillating Higgs field

We propose a new leptogenesis scenario in which the lepton asymmetry and matter particles are simultaneously generated due to the coherent oscillating Higgs background. To demonstrate the possibility of our scenario, we consider the type-I seesaw model as an illuminating example and show the numerical analysis. In order to generate the required lepton number $|n_L/s| = 2.4 \times 10^{-10}$, we find that the scales of the Higgs background oscillation and the lightest right-handed neutrinos mass are required to be higher than $10^{14}$ GeV

Duration of Classicality of an inhomogeneous quantum field with repulsive contact self-interactions

Quantum fields with large degeneracy are often approximated as classical fields. Here, we show how quantum and classical evolution of a highly degenerate quantum field with repulsive contact self-interactions differ from each other. Initially, the field is taken to be homogeneous except for a small plane wave perturbations in only one mode. In quantum field theory, modes satisfying both momentum and energy conservation of the quasi-particles, grow exponentially with time. However, in the classical field approximation, the system is stable. We calculate the time scale after which the classical field description becomes invalid.

Baryogenesis with the Berry phase

The spontaneous baryogenesis scenario explains how a baryon asymmetry can develop while baryon violating interactions are still in thermal equilibrium. However, generation of the chemical potential from the derivative coupling is dubious since the chemical potential may not appear after the Legendre transformation. The geometric phase (Pancharatnam-Berry phase) results from the geometrical properties of the parameter space of the Hamiltonian, which is calculated from the Berry connection. In this paper, using the formalism of the Berry phase, we show that the chemical potential defined by the Berry connection is consistent with the Legendre transformation. The framework of the Berry phase is useful in explaining the mathematical background of the spontaneous baryogenesis, and also is useful for calculating the asymmetry of the non-thermal particle production in time-dependent backgrounds. Using the formalism, we show that the mechanism can be extended to more complex situations.

Asymmetric Preheating

We study the generation of the matter-antimatter asymmetry during bosonic preheating, focusing on the sources of the asymmetry. If the asymmetry appears in the multiplication factor of the resonant particle production, the matter-antimatter ratio will grow during preheating. On the other hand, if the asymmetry does not grow during preheating, one has to find out another reason. We consider several scenarios for the asymmetric preheating to distinguish the sources of the asymmetry. We also discuss a new baryogenesis scenario, in which the asymmetry is generated without introducing neither loop corrections nor rotation of a field.

Gravitational self-interactions of a degenerate quantum scalar field

We develop a formalism to help calculate in quantum field theory the departures from the description of a system by classical field equations. We apply the formalism to a homogeneous condensate with attractive contact interactions and to a homogeneous self-gravitating condensate in critical expansion. In their classical descriptions, such condensates persist forever. We show that in their quantum description, parametric resonance causes quanta to jump in pairs out of the condensate into all modes with wavector less than some critical value. We calculate in each case the time scale over which the homogeneous condensate is depleted, and after which a classical description is invalid. We argue that the duration of classicality of inhomogeneous condensates is shorter than that of homogeneous condensates.

Duration of Classicality of Homogeneous Condensates with Attractive Interactions

Dark matter axions and other highly degenerate bosonic fluids are commonly described by classical field equations. In a recent paper \cite{BECprop} we calculated the duration of classicality of homogeneous condensates with attractive contact interactions and of self-gravitating homogeneous condensates in critical expansion. According to their classical equations of motion, such condensates persist forever. In their quantum evolution parametric resonance causes quanta to jump in pairs out of the condensate into all modes with wavevector less than some critical value. We estimated in each case the time scale over which the condensate is depleted and after which a classical description is invalid.

Quenching preheating by light fields

In this paper we investigate the role of additional light fields not directly coupled to the background during preheating. We extend our previous study that proved that the production of particles associated with such fields can be abundant due to quantum corrections, even for the massless states. We also obtain the expression for the occupation number operator in terms of interacting fields which includes the non-linear effects important for non-perturbative particle production. We show that adding too many light degrees of freedom without direct interactions with the background might attenuate or even quench preheating as the result of backreaction effects.

Particle production with L-R neutrino oscillation

When the Higgs field starts oscillation after Higgs inflation, gauge bosons are produced non-perturbatively near the Enhanced Symmetry Point (ESP). Just after the particle production, when the Higgs field is going away from the ESP, these gauge bosons gain mass and decay or annihilate into Standard Model (SM) fermions. Left-handed neutrinos can be generated in that way. If one assumes the see-saw mechanism, the mass matrix of a pair of left and right-handed neutrinos is non-diagonal. Although their mixing in the mass eigenstates is negligible in the true vacuum, it could be significant near the edge of the Higgs oscillation, where the off-diagonal component is large. Therefore, the left-handed neutrinos generated from the gauge bosons can start neutrino oscillation between the right-handed neutrinos. We study the particle production when such L-R neutrino oscillation is significant. For a working example, the non-thermal leptogenesis scenario after Higgs inflation is examined, which cannot be realized without the L-R neutrino oscillation. The same mechanism could be applied to other singlet particles whose abundance has been neglected.

Particle production in the background with VEV depending on time

It is known that time-dependent vacuum expectation value of the background field may lead to abundant particle production in the early Universe. In supersymmetric theories bosons and fermions are produced in a correlated manner that depends on the details of the supersymmetric scenario. Paper presents the general method of calculating the number density of produced particles based on the WKB approximation and the generalized Bogoliubov transformation law. The impact of the backreaction and rescattering is emphasized, also in models with more than one coupling constant.
