The calculus of Duistermaat's triple index

In this paper we develop a systematic calculus for the Duistermaat index, a symplectic invariant defined for triples of Lagrangian subspaces. Introduced nearly half a century ago, this index has lately been the subject of renewed attention, due to its central role in eigenvalue interlacing problems on quantum graphs (and more abstractly for self-adjoint extensions of symmetric operators). Here we give an axiomatic characterization of the index that leads to elementary proofs of its fundamental properties. We also relate the index to other quantities often appearing in symplectic geometry, such as the Hörmander--Kashiwara--Wall index and the Maslov index. Among other things, this leads to a curious formula for the Morse index of a difference of Hermitian matrices.

Hadamard-type formulas for real eigenvalues of canonically symplectic operators

We give first-order asymptotic expansions for the resolvent and Hadamard-type formulas for the eigenvalue curves of one-parameter families of canonically symplectic operators. We allow for parameter dependence in the boundary conditions, bounded perturbations and trace operators associated with each off-diagonal operator, and give formulas for derivatives of eigenvalue curves emanating from the discrete eigenvalue of the unperturbed operator in terms of Maslov crossing forms. We derive the Hadamard-type formulas using two different methods: via a symplectic resolvent difference formula and asymptotic expansions of the resolvent, and using Lyapunov-Schmidt reduction and the implicit function theorem. The latter approach facilitates derivative formulas when the eigenvalue curves are viewed as functions of the spectral parameter. We apply our abstract results to derive a spectral index theorem for the linearised operator associated with a standing wave in the nonlinear Schrödinger equation on a compact star graph.

Some Remarks On Krein--von Neumann Extensions

We survey various properties of Krein--von Neumann extensions $S_K$ and the reduced Krein--von Neumann operator $\hatt S_K$ in connection with a strictly positive (symmetric) operator $S$ with nonzero deficiency indices. In particular, we focus on the resolvents of $S_K$ and $\hatt S_K$ and of the trace ideal properties of the resolvent of $\hatt S_K$, and make some comparisons with the corresponding properties of the resolvent of the Friedrichs extension $S_F$. We also recall a parametrization of all nonnegative self-adjoint extensions of $S$ and various Krein-type resolvent formulas for any two relatively prime self-adjoint extensions of $S$, utilizing a Donoghue-type $M$-operator (i.e., an energy parameter dependent Dirichlet-to-Neumann-type map).

The Duistermaat index and eigenvalue interlacing for self-adjoint extensions of a symmetric operator

Eigenvalue interlacing is a useful tool in linear algebra and spectral analysis. In its simplest form, the interlacing inequality states that a rank-one positive perturbation shifts each eigenvalue up, but not further than the next unperturbed eigenvalue. For different types of perturbations, this idea is known as Weyl interlacing, Cauchy interlacing, Dirichlet--Neumann bracketing and so on. We prove a sharp version of the interlacing inequalities for ``finite-dimensional perturbations in boundary conditions'', expressed as bounds on the spectral shift between two self-adjoint extensions of a fixed symmetric operator with finite and equal defect numbers. The bounds are given in terms of the Duistermaat index, a topological invariant describing the relative position of three Lagrangian planes in a symplectic space. Two of the Lagrangian planes describe the self-adjoint extensions being compared, while the third corresponds to the Friedrichs extension, which acts as a reference point. Along the way several auxiliary results are established, including one-sided continuity properties of the Duistermaat triple index, smoothness of the (abstract) Cauchy data space without unique continuation-type assumptions, and a formula for the Morse index of an extension of a non-negative symmetric operator.

First-order asymptotic perturbation theory for extensions of symmetric operators

This work offers a new prospective on asymptotic perturbation theory for varying self-adjoint extensions of symmetric operators. Employing symplectic formulation of self-adjointness we obtain a new version of Krein formula for resolvent difference which facilitates asymptotic analysis of resolvent operators via first order expansion for the family of Lagrangian planes associated with perturbed operators. Specifically, we derive a Riccati-type differential equation and the first order asymptotic expansion for resolvents of self-adjoint extensions determined by smooth one-parameter families of Lagrangian planes. This asymptotic perturbation theory yields a symplectic version of the abstract Kato selection theorem and Hadamard-Rellich-type variational formula for slopes of multiple eigenvalue curves bifurcating from an eigenvalue of the unperturbed operator. The latter, in turn, gives a general infinitesimal version of the celebrated formula equating the spectral flow of a path of self-adjoint extensions and the Maslov index of the corresponding path of Lagrangian planes. Applications are given to quantum graphs, periodic Kronig-Penney model, elliptic second order partial differential operators with Robin boundary conditions, and physically relevant heat equations with thermal conductivity.

Well-posedness of Keller-Segel systems on compact metric graphs

Chemotaxis phenomena govern the directed movement of micro-organisms in response to chemical stimuli. In this paper, we investigate two Keller--Segel systems of reaction-advection-diffusion equations modeling chemotaxis on thin networks. The distinction between two systems is driven by the rate of diffusion of the chemo-attractant. The intermediate rate of diffusion is modeled by a coupled pair of parabolic equations, while the rapid rate is described by a parabolic equation coupled with an elliptic one. Assuming the polynomial rate of growth of the chemotaxis sensitivity coefficient, we prove local well-posedness of both systems on compact metric graphs, and, in particular, prove existence of unique classical solutions. This is achieved by constructing sufficiently regular mild solutions via analytic semigroup methods and combinatorial description of the heat kernel on metric graphs. The regularity of mild solutions is shown by applying abstract semigroup results to semi-linear parabolic equations on compact graphs. In addition, for logistic type Keller--Segel systems we prove global well-posedness and, in some special cases, global uniform boundedness of solutions.

Stability and bifurcation for logistic Keller--Segel models on compact graphs

This paper concerns asymptotic stability, instability, and bifurcation of constant steady state solutions of the parabolic-parabolic and parabolic-elliptic chemotaxis models on metric graphs. We determine a threshold value $χ^*>0$ of the chemotaxis sensitivity parameter that separates the regimes of local asymptotic stability and instability, and, in addition, determine the parameter intervals that facilitate global asymptotic convergence of solutions with positive initial data to constant steady states. Moreover, we provide a sequence of bifurcation points for the chemotaxis sensitivity parameter that yields non-constant steady state solutions. In particular, we show that the first bifurcation point coincides with threshold value $χ^*$ for a generic compact metric graph. Finally, we supply numerical computation of bifurcation points for several graphs.

Spectral properties of Schrödinger operators with locally $H^{-1}$ potentials

We study half-line Schrödinger operators with locally $H^{-1}$ potentials. In the first part, we focus on a general spectral theoretic framework for such operators, including a Last--Simon-type description of the absolutely continuous spectrum and sufficient conditions for different spectral types. In the second part, we focus on potentials which are decaying in a local $H^{-1}$ sense; we establish a spectral transition between short-range and long-range potentials and an $\ell^2$ spectral transition for sparse singular potentials. The regularization procedure used to handle distributional potentials is also well suited for controlling rapid oscillations in the potential; thus, even within the class of smooth potentials, our results apply in situations which would not classically be considered decaying or even bounded.

Resolvent expansions for self-adjoint operators via boundary triplets

In this paper we develop certain aspects of perturbation theory for self-adjoint operators subject to small variations of their domains. We use the abstract theory of boundary triplets to quantify such perturbations and give the second order asymptotic analysis for resolvents, spectral projections, discrete eigenvalues of the corresponding self-adjoint operators. In particular, we derive explicit formulas for the first variation and the Hessian of the eigenvalue curves bifurcating from a discrete eigenvalue of an unperturbed operator. An application is given to a matrix valued Robin Laplacian and more general Robin-type self-adjoint extensions.

Localization for Anderson Models on Metric and Discrete Tree Graphs

We establish spectral and dynamical localization for several Anderson models on metric and discrete radial trees. The localization results are obtained on compact intervals contained in the complement of discrete sets of exceptional energies. All results are proved under the minimal hypothesis on the type of disorder: the random variables generating the trees assume at least two distinct values. This level of generality, in particular, allows us to treat radial trees with disordered geometry as well as Schrödinger operators with Bernoulli-type singular potentials. Our methods are based on an interplay between graph-theoretical properties of radial trees and spectral analysis of the associated random differential and difference operators on the half-line.

Random Hamiltonians with Arbitrary Point Interactions

We consider disordered Hamiltonians given by the Laplace operator subject to arbitrary random self-adjoint singular perturbations supported on random discrete subsets of the real line. Under minimal assumptions on the type of disorder, we prove the following dichotomy: Either every realization of the random operator has purely absolutely continuous spectrum or spectral and exponential dynamical localization hold. In particular, we establish Anderson localization for Schrödinger operators with Bernoulli-type random singular potential and singular density.

Zero Measure and Singular Continuous Spectra for Quantum Graphs

We introduce a dynamically defined class of unbounded, connected, equilateral metric graphs on which the Kirchhoff Laplacian has zero Lebesgue measure spectrum and a nontrivial singular continuous part. A new local Borg--Marchenko uniqueness result is obtained in order to utilize Kotani theory for aperiodic subshifts satisfying Boshernitzan's condition.

Limits of Quantum Graph Operators With Shrinking Edges

We address the question of convergence of Schrödinger operators on metric graphs with general self-adjoint vertex conditions as lengths of some of graph's edges shrink to zero. We determine the limiting operator and study convergence in a suitable norm resolvent sense. It is noteworthy that, as edge lengths tend to zero, standard Sobolev-type estimates break down, making convergence fail for some graphs. We use a combination of functional-analytic bounds on the edges of the graph and Lagrangian geometry considerations for the vertex conditions to establish a sufficient condition for convergence. This condition encodes an intricate balance between the topology of the graph and its vertex data. In particular, it does not depend on the potential, on the differences in the rates of convergence of the shrinking edges, or on the lengths of the unaffected edges.

An index theorem for Schrödinger operators on metric graphs

We show that the spectral flow of a one-parameter family of Schrödinger operators on a metric graph is equal to the Maslov index of a path of Lagrangian subspaces describing the vertex conditions. In addition, we derive an Hadamard-type formula for the derivatives of the eigenvalue curves via the Maslov crossing form.

Anderson Localization for Radial Tree Graphs With Random Branching Numbers

We prove Anderson localization for the discrete Laplace operator on radial tree graphs with random branching numbers. Our method relies on the representation of the Laplace operator as the direct sum of half-line Jacobi matrices whose entries are non-degenerate, independent, identically distributed random variables with singular distributions.

The Maslov Index and the Spectra of Second Order Elliptic Operators

We consider second order elliptic differential operators on a bounded Lipschitz domain $Ω$. Firstly, we establish a natural one-to-one correspondence between their self-adjoint extensions, with domains of definition containing in $H^1(Ω)$, and Lagrangian planes in $H^{1/2}(\partialΩ)\times H^{-1/2}(\partialΩ)$. Secondly, we derive a formula relating the spectral flow of the one-parameter families of such operators to the Maslov index, the topological invariant counting the signed number of conjugate points of paths of Lagrangian planes in $H^{1/2}(\partialΩ)\times H^{-1/2}(\partialΩ)$. Furthermore, we compute the Morse index, the number of negative eigenvalues, in terms of the Maslov index for several classes of the second order operators: the $\vecθ-$periodic Schrödinger operators on a period cell $Q\subset \mathbb{R}^n$, the elliptic operators with Robin-type boundary conditions, and the abstract self-adjoint extensions of the Schrödinger operators on star-shaped domains. Our work is built on the techniques recently developed by B.Booß-Bavnbek, K. Furutani, and C. Zhu, and extends the scope of validity of their spectral flow formula by incorporating the self-adjoint extensions of the second order operators with domains in the first order Sobolev space $H^1(Ω)$. In addition, we generalize the results concerning relations between the Maslov and Morse indices quite recently obtained by G. Cox, J. Deng, C. Jones, J. Marzuola, A. Sukhtayev and the authors. Finally, we describe and study a link between the theory of abstract boundary triples and the Lagrangian description of self-adjoint extensions of abstract symmetric operators.

A bound for the eigenvalue counting function for Krein--von Neumann and Friedrichs extensions

For an arbitrary open, nonempty, bounded set $Ω\subset \mathbb{R}^n$, $n \in \mathbb{N}$, and sufficiently smooth coefficients $a,b,q$, we consider the closed, strictly positive, higher-order differential operator $A_{Ω, 2m} (a,b,q)$ in $L^2(Ω)$ defined on $W_0^{2m,2}(Ω)$, associated with the higher-order differential expression $$ τ_{2m} (a,b,q) := \bigg(\sum_{j,k=1}^{n} (-i \partial_j - b_j) a_{j,k} (-i \partial_k - b_k)+q\bigg)^m, \quad m \in \mathbb{N}, $$ and its Krein--von Neumann extension $A_{K, Ω, 2m} (a,b,q)$ in $L^2(Ω)$. Denoting by $N(λ; A_{K, Ω, 2m} (a,b,q))$, $λ> 0$, the eigenvalue counting function corresponding to the strictly positive eigenvalues of $A_{K, Ω, 2m} (a,b,q)$, we derive the bound $$ N(λ; A_{K, Ω, 2m} (a,b,q)) \leq C v_n (2π)^{-n} \bigg(1+\frac{2m}{2m+n}\bigg)^{n/(2m)} λ^{n/(2m)} , \quad λ> 0, $$ where $C = C(a,b,q,Ω)>0$ (with $C(I_n,0,0,Ω) = |Ω|$) is connected to the eigenfunction expansion of the self-adjoint operator $\widetilde A_{2m} (a,b,q)$ in $L^2(\mathbb{R}^n)$ defined on $W^{2m,2}(\mathbb{R}^n)$, corresponding to $τ_{2m} (a,b,q)$. Here $v_n := π^{n/2}/Γ((n+2)/2)$ denotes the (Euclidean) volume of the unit ball in $\mathbb{R}^n$. Our method of proof relies on variational considerations exploiting the fundamental link between the Krein--von Neumann extension and an underlying abstract buckling problem, and on the distorted Fourier transform defined in terms of the eigenfunction transform of $\widetilde A_{2} (a,b,q)$ in $L^2(\mathbb{R}^n)$. We also consider the analogous bound for the eigenvalue counting function for the Friedrichs extension $A_{F,Ω, 2m} (a,b,q)$ in $L^2(Ω)$ of $A_{Ω, 2m} (a,b,q)$. No assumptions on the boundary $\partial Ω$ of $Ω$ are made.

Counting spectrum via the Maslov index for one dimensional $θ-$periodic Schrödinger operators

We study the spectrum of the Schrödinger operators with $n\times n$ matrix valued potentials on a finite interval subject to $θ-$periodic boundary conditions. For two such operators, corresponding to different values of $θ$, we compute the difference of their eigenvalue counting functions via the Maslov index of a path of Lagrangian planes. In addition we derive a formula for the derivatives of the eigenvalues with respect to $θ$ in terms of the Maslov crossing form. Finally, we give a new shorter proof of a recent result relating the Morse and Maslov indices of the Schrödinger operator for a fixed $θ$.
