Deformations of Special Lagrangian Submanifolds; An Approach via Fredholm Alternative

In an earlier paper, we showed that the moduli space of deformations of a smooth, compact, orientable special Lagrangian submanifold L in a symplectic manifold X with a non-integrable almost complex structure is a smooth manifold of dimension H^1(L), the space of harmonic 1-forms on L. We proved this first by showing that the linearized operator for the deformation map is surjective and then applying the Banach space implicit function theorem. In this paper, we obtain the same surjectivity result by using a different method, the Fredholm Alternative, which is a powerful tool for compact operators in linear functional analysis.

Deformations of Special Lagrangian Submanifolds

R.C.McLean showed that the moduli space of nearby submanifolds of a smooth, compact, orientable special Lagrangian submanifold L in a Calabi-Yau manifold X is a smooth manifold and its tangent space at L is identified with the space of harmonic one forms on L. In this paper, we will extend this result from Calabi-Yau manifolds to the symplectic manifolds with non-integrable almost complex structure.

Asymptotically Cylindrical Ricci-Flat Manifolds

Asymptotically cylindrical Ricci-flat manifolds play a key role in constructing Topological Quantum Field Theories. It is particularly important to understand their behavior at the cylindrical ends and the natural restrictions on the geometry. In this paper we show that an orientable, connected, asymptotically cylindrical manifold (M,g) with Ricci-flat metric g can have at most two cylindrical ends. In the case where there are two such cylindrical ends then there is reduction in the holonomy group Hol(g) and (M,g) is a cylinder.

Deformations of asymptotically cylindrical coassociative submanifolds with fixed boundary

McLean proved that the moduli space of coassociative deformations of a compact coassociative 4-submanifold C in a G_2-manifold (M,phi,g) is a smooth manifold of dimension equal to b^2_+(C). In this paper, we show that the moduli space of coassociative deformations of a noncompact, asymptotically cylindrical coassociative 4-fold C in an asymptotically cylindrical G_2-manifold (M,phi,g) is also a smooth manifold. Its dimension is the dimension of the positive subspace of the image of H^2_cs(C,R) in H^2(C,R).

Associative submanifolds of a G2 manifold

We study deformations of associative submanifolds $Y^3\subset M^7$ of a $G_2$ manifold $M^7$. We show that the deformation space can be perturbed to be smooth, and it can be made compact and zero dimensional by constraining it with an additional equation. This allows us to associate local invariants to associative submanifolds of $M$. The local equations at each associative $Y$ are restrictions of a global equation on a certain associated Grassmann bundle over $ M$.

On Constructing Special Lagrangian Submanifolds by Gluing

The purpose of this paper is to give an application of the gluing theorem for special Lagrangian submanifolds of a Calabi-Yau 3-fold. We proved a gluing theorem before to smooth a codimension-two singularity of a particular special Lagrangian submanifold. In this paper we will show that this theorem can be applied to more general cases where different special Lagrangians are intersecting and gives a way of constructing new special Lagrangian submanifolds. As an example we will show that a smooth special Lagrangian submanifold can be obtained from five copies of RP^3 intersecting pairwise in a quintic.

A Gluing Theorem for Special Lagrangian Submanifolds

The purpose of this paper is to prove a gluing theorem for a given special Lagrangian submanifold of a Calabi-Yau 3-fold. The proof will be an adaption of the gluing techniques in J-holomorphic curve theory. It is a well known procedure in geometric analysis to construct new solutions to a given nonlinear partial differential equation by gluing known solutions. First an approximate solution is constructed and then using analytic methods it is perturbed to a real solution. In this paper the gluing theorem will be used for smoothing a singularity of a special Lagrangian submanifold. In particular, we will show that given a special Lagrangian submanifold L of a Calabi-Yau manifold X with a particular codimension-two self intersection K it can be approximated by a sequence of smooth special Lagrangian submanifolds and therefore L is a limit point in the moduli space.
