Microlocal limits of plane waves and Eisenstein functions

We study microlocal limits of plane waves on noncompact Riemannian manifolds (M,g) which are either Euclidean or asymptotically hyperbolic with curvature -1 near infinity. The plane waves E(z,ξ) are functions on M parametrized by the square root of energy z and the direction of the wave, ξ, interpreted as a point at infinity. If the trapped set K for the geodesic flow has Liouville measure zero, we show that, as z\to +\infty, E(z,ξ) microlocally converges to a measure μ_ξ, in average on energy intervals of fixed size, [z,z+1], and in ξ. We express the rate of convergence to the limit in terms of the classical escape rate of the geodesic flow and its maximal expansion rate - when the flow is Axiom A on the trapped set, this yields a negative power of z. As an application, we obtain Weyl type asymptotic expansions for local traces of spectral projectors with a remainder controlled in terms of the classical escape rate.

Asymptotics of linear waves and resonances with applications to black holes

We apply the results of arXiv:1301.5633 to describe asymptotic behavior of linear waves on stationary Lorentzian metrics with r-normally hyperbolic trapped sets, in particular Kerr and Kerr-de Sitter metrics with |a| > 1, then the energy norm of the solution is bounded by O(λ^{1/2} exp(-(ν_min - ε)t/2) + λ^(-\infty)), for t < C logλ, where ν_min is a natural dynamical quantity. The key tool is a microlocal projector splitting the solution into a component with controlled rate of exponential decay and an O(λexp(-(ν_min -ε)t) + λ^(-\infty)) remainder; this splitting can be viewed as an analog of resonance expansion. Moreover, for the Kerr-de Sitter case we study quasi-normal modes; under a dynamical pinching condition, a Weyl law in a band holds.

Fractal Weyl laws for asymptotically hyperbolic manifolds

For asymptotically hyperbolic manifolds with hyperbolic trapped sets we prove a fractal upper bound on the number of resonances near the essential spectrum, with power determined by the dimension of the trapped set. This covers the case of general convex cocompact quotients (including the case of connected trapped sets) where our result implies a bound on the number of zeros of the Selberg zeta function in disks of arbitrary size along the imaginary axis. Although no sharp fractal lower bounds are known, the case of quasifuchsian groups, included here, is most likely to provide them.

Sharp polynomial bounds on the number of Pollicott-Ruelle resonances

We give a sharp polynomial bound on the number of Pollicott-Ruelle resonances. These resonances, which are complex numbers in the lower half-plane, appear in expansions of correlations for Anosov contact flows. The bounds follow the tradition of upper bounds on the number of scattering resonances and improve a recent bound of Faure-Sjöstrand. The complex scaling method used in scattering theory is replaced by an approach using exponentially weighted spaces introduced by Helffer-Sjöstrand in scattering theory and by Faure-Sjöstrand in the theory of Anosov flows.

Quantum ergodicity for restrictions to hypersurfaces

Quantum ergodicity theorem states that for quantum systems with ergodic classical flows, eigenstates are, in average, uniformly distributed on energy surfaces. We show that if N is a hypersurface in the position space satisfying a simple dynamical condition, the restrictions of eigenstates to N are also quantum ergodic.

Scattering phase asymptotics with fractal remainders

For a Riemannian manifold $(M,g)$ which is isometric to the Euclidean space outside of a compact set, and whose trapped set has Liouville measure zero, we prove Weyl type asymptotics for the scattering phase with remainder depending on the classical escape rate and the maximal expansion rate. For Axiom A geodesic flows, this gives a polynomial improvement over the known remainders. We also show that the remainder can be bounded above by the number of resonances in some neighbourhoods of the real axis, and provide similar asymptotics for hyperbolic quotients using the Selberg zeta function.

Microlocal limits of Eisenstein functions away from the unitarity axis

We consider a surface M with constant curvature cusp ends and its Eisenstein functions E_j(λ). These are the plane waves associated to the j-th cusp and the spectral parameter λ, (Δ- 1/4 - λ^2)E_j = 0. We prove that as Reλ\to \infty and Imλ\to ν> 0, E_j converges microlocally to a certain naturally defined measure decaying exponentially along the geodesic flow. In particular, for a sequence of λ's corresponding to scattering resonances, we find the microlocal limit of resonant states with energies away from the real line. This statement is similar to quantum unique ergodicity (QUE), which holds in certain other situations; however, the proof uses only the structure of the infinite ends, not the global properties of the geodesic flow. As an application, we also show that the scattering matrix tends to zero in strips separated from the real line.

Asymptotic distribution of quasi-normal modes for Kerr-de Sitter black holes

We establish a Bohr-Sommerfeld type condition for quasi-normal modes of a slowly rotating Kerr-de Sitter black hole, providing their full asymptotic description in any strip of fixed width. In particular, we observe a Zeeman-like splitting of the high multiplicity modes at a=0 (Schwarzschild-de Sitter), once spherical symmetry is broken. The numerical results presented in Appendix B show that the asymptotics are in fact accurate at very low energies and agree with the numerical results established by other methods in the physics literature. We also prove that solutions of the wave equation can be asymptotically expanded in terms of quasi-normal modes; this confirms the validity of the interpretation of their real parts as frequencies of oscillations, and imaginary parts as decay rates of gravitational waves.

Weighted eigenfunction estimates with applications to compressed sensing

Using tools from semiclassical analysis, we give weighted L^\infty estimates for eigenfunctions of strictly convex surfaces of revolution. These estimates give rise to new sampling techniques and provide improved bounds on the number of samples necessary for recovering sparse eigenfunction expansions on surfaces of revolution. On the sphere, our estimates imply that any function having an s-sparse expansion in the first N spherical harmonics can be efficiently recovered from its values at m > s N^(1/6) log^4(N) sampling points.

Microlocal analysis of asymptotically hyperbolic and Kerr-de Sitter spaces

In this paper we develop a general, systematic, microlocal framework for the Fredholm analysis of non-elliptic problems, including high energy (or semiclassical) estimates, which is stable under perturbations. This framework is relatively simple given modern microlocal analysis, and only takes a bit over a dozen pages after the statement of notation. It resides on a compact manifold without boundary, hence in the standard setting of microlocal analysis, including semiclassical analysis. The rest of the paper is devoted to applications. Many natural applications arise in the setting of non-Riemannian b-metrics in the context of Melrose's b-structures. These include asymptotically Minkowski metrics, asymptotically de Sitter-type metrics on a blow-up of the natural compactification and Kerr-de Sitter-type metrics. The simplest application, however, is to provide a new approach to analysis on Riemannian or Lorentzian (or indeed, possibly of other signature) conformally compact spaces (such as asymptotically hyperbolic or de Sitter spaces). The results include, in particular, a new construction of the meromorphic extension of the resolvent of the Laplacian in the Riemannian case, as well as high energy estimates for the spectral parameter in strips of the complex plane. The appendix written by Dyatlov relates his analysis of resonances on exact Kerr-de Sitter space (which then was used to analyze the wave equation in that setting) to the more general method described here.

Quasi-normal modes and exponential energy decay for the Kerr-de Sitter black hole

We provide a rigorous definition of quasi-normal modes for a rotating black hole. They are given by the poles of a certain meromorphic family of operators and agree with the heuristic definition in the physics literature. If the black hole rotates slowly enough, we show that these poles form a discrete subset of the complex plane. As an application we prove that the local energy of linear waves in that background decays exponentially once orthogonality to the zero resonance is imposed.
