Chern classes of Laughlin bundles on the quasihole moduli space

We study fractional quantum Hall states with quasihole excitations, on Riemann surfaces of arbitrary genus. For configurations with $m$ quasiholes we construct a vector bundle above the $m$-th symmetric power of the curve so that the fiber at a point $\lbrace w_1,\dots,w_m \rbrace$ corresponds to the state with quasiholes localized at these positions. We determine the Chern character of this bundle via the Grothendieck-Riemann-Roch theorem and show that in the completely filled state, i.e. when the number of particles is maximal, the vector bundle is compatible with the condition of projective flatness. Furthermore, we obtain a generalization of this result to the case of multiple layers and multiple quasihole types. In genus zero and one, we construct explicit wave-functions and verify that the curvature of the associated Chern connection reproduces the predicted Chern classes. The Chern classes obtained match, term by term, the predicted decomposition of the Berry phase under quasihole exchange, into an extensive Aharonov--Bohm contribution and a fractional statistical contribution.

The Chern character of the Laughlin vector bundle in the Fractional Quantum Hall Effect

We begin by explaining how a physical problem of studying the quantum Hall effect on a closed surface $C$ leads, via Laughlin's approach, to a mathematical question of describing the rank and the first Chern class of a particular vector bundle on the Picard group ${\rm Pic}^g(C)$. Then we formulate and solve the problem mathematically, proving several important conjectures made by physicists, in particular the Wen-Niu topological degeneracy conjecture and the Wen-Zee shift formula. Let $C$ be a closed Riemann surface of genus~$g$ and $S^NC$ its $N$th symmetric power. The product $C \times {\rm Pic}^d(C)$ carries a universal line bundle. On the product $C^N \times {\rm Pic}^d(C)$ we consider the product of $N$ pull-backs of this universal line bundle and twist it by a power of the diagonal on $C^N$. The resulting line bundle descends onto $S^NC \times {\rm Pic}^d(C)$. Its push-forward (as a sheaf) to ${\rm Pic}^d(C)$ is a vector bundle that we call Laughlin's vector bundle. We determine all the Chern characters of the Laughlin vector bundle via a Grothendieck-Riemann-Roch calculation.

Norms of wave functions for FQHE models on a torus

The goal of this paper is to give an explicit computation of the curvature of the magnetic vector bundle of the multi-layer model of the fractional quantum Hall effect on a torus. We also obtain concrete formulae for the norms of the corresponding wave functions arising in such models.

Algebraic geometry of the multilayer model of the fractional quantum Hall effect on a torus

In 1993 Keski-Vakkuri and Wen introduced a model for the fractional quantum Hall effect based on multilayer two-dimensional electron systems satisfying quasi-periodic boundary conditions. Such a model is essentially specified by a choice of a complex torus $E$ and a symmetric positively definite matrix $K$ of size $g$ with positive integral coefficients. The space of the corresponding wave functions turns out to be $\delta$-dimensional, where $\delta$ is the determinant of $K$. We construct a hermitian holomorphic bundle of rank $\delta$ on the abelian variety $A$ (which is the $g$-fold product of the torus $E$ with itself), whose fibres can be identified with the space of wave function of Keski-Vakkuri and Wen. A rigorous construction of this "magnetic bundle" involves the technique of Fourier-Mukai transforms on abelian varieties. This bundle turns out to be simple and semi-homogeneous. This bundle can be equipped with two different (and natural) hermitian metrics: the one coming from the center-of-mass dynamics and the one coming from the Hilbert space of the underlying many-body system. We prove that the canonical Bott-Chern connection of the first hermitian metric is always projectively flat and give sufficient conditions for this property for the second hermitian metric.

Origin of Model Fractional Chern Insulators in All Topological Ideal Flatbands: Explicit Color-entangled Wavefunction and Exact Density Algebra

It is commonly believed that nonuniform Berry curvature destroys the Girvin-MacDonald-Platzman algebra and as a consequence destabilizes fractional Chern insulators. In this work we disprove this common lore by presenting a theory for all topological ideal flatbands with nonzero Chern number C. The smooth single-particle Bloch wavefunction is proved to admit an exact color-entangled form as a superposition of C lowest Landau level type wavefunctions distinguished by boundary conditions. Including repulsive interactions, Abelian and non-Abelian model fractional Chern insulators of Halperin type are stabilized as exact zero-energy ground states no matter how nonuniform Berry curvature is, as long as the quantum geometry is ideal and the repulsion is short-ranged. The key reason behind is the existence of an emergent Hilbert space in which Berry curvature can be exactly flattened by adjusting wavefunction's normalization. In such space, the flatband-projected density operator obeys a closed Girvin-MacDonald-Platzman type algebra, making exact mapping to C-layered Landau levels possible. In the end we discuss applications of the theory to moire flatband systems with a particular focus on the fractionalized phase and spontaneous symmetry breaking phase recently observed in graphene based twisted materials.

Fractional Quantum Hall States on CP2 Space

We study four-dimensional fractional quantum Hall states on CP2 geometry from microscopic approaches. While in 2d the standard Laughlin wave function, given by a power of Vandermonde determinant, admits a product representation in terms of the Jastrow factor, this is no longer true in higher dimensions. In 4d we can define two different types of Laughlin wavefunctions, the Determinant-Laughlin (Det-Laughlin) and Jastrow-Laughlin (Jas-Laughlin) states. We find that they are exactly annihilated by, respectively, two-particle and three-particle short ranged interacting Hamiltonians. We then mainly focus on the ground state, low energy excitations and the quasi-hole degeneracy of Det-Laughlin state. The quasi-hole degeneracy exhibits an anomalous counting, indicating the existence of multiple forms of quasi-hole wavefunctions. We argue that these are captured by the mathematical framework of the "commutative algebra of N-points in the plane". We also generalize the pseudopotential formalism to dimensions higher than two, by considering coherent state wavefunction of bound states. The microscopic wavefunctions and Hamiltonians studied in this work pave the way for systematic study of high dimensional topological phase of matter that is potentially realizable in cold atom and optical experiments.

Geometric test for topological states of matter

We generalize the flux insertion argument due to Laughlin, Niu-Thouless-Tao-Wu, and Avron-Seiler-Zograf to the case of fractional quantum Hall states on a higher-genus surface. We propose this setting as a test to characterise the robustness, or topologicity, of the quantum state of matter and apply our test to the Laughlin states. Laughlin states form a vector bundle, the Laughlin bundle, over the Jacobian - the space of Aharonov-Bohm fluxes through the holes of the surface. The rank of the Laughlin bundle is the degeneracy of Laughlin states or, in presence of quasiholes, the dimension of the corresponding full many-body Hilbert space; its slope, which is the first Chern class divided by the rank, is the Hall conductance. We compute the rank and all the Chern classes of Laughlin bundles for any genus and any number of quasiholes, settling, in particular, the Wen-Niu conjecture. Then we show that Laughlin bundles with non-localized quasiholes are not projectively flat and that the Hall current is precisely quantized only for the states with localized quasiholes. Hence our test distinguishes these states from the full many-body Hilbert space.

Liouville perturbation theory for Laughlin state and Coulomb gas

We consider the generating functional (logarithm of the normalization factor) of the Laughlin state on a sphere, in the limit of a large number of particles $N$. The problem is reformulated in terms of a perturbative expansion of a 2d QFT, resembling the Liouville field theory. We develop an analog of the Liouville loop perturbation theory, which allows us to quantitatively study the generating functional for an arbitrary smooth metric and an inhomogeneous magnetic field beyond the leading orders in large $N$.

Geometric responses of the Pfaffian state

We define and study the Pfaffian state on Riemann surfaces with arbitrary metrics and an inhomogeneous magnetic field and derive its universal transport coefficients. Following a path integral approach, we compute the generating functional which encodes the linear response of the system to a variation of the background metric and the magnetic field and use it to compute the leading and sub-leading corrections to the charge density in a large-$N$ expansion. We also present the first derivation of gravitational anomaly contribution at O$(k^6)$ to the static structure factor for the Pfaffian state in the long wavelength limit.

Laughlin states on higher genus Riemann surfaces

Considering quantum Hall states on geometric backgrounds has proved over the past few years to be a useful tool for uncovering their less evident properties, such as gravitational and electromagnetic responses, topological phases and novel geometric adiabatic transport coefficients. One of the transport coefficients, the central charge associated with the gravitational anomaly, appears as a Chern number for the adiabatic transport on the moduli spaces of higher genus Riemann surfaces. This calls for a better understanding of the QH states on these backgrounds. Here we present a rigorous definition and give a detailed account of the construction of Laughlin states on Riemann surfaces of genus ${\rm g}>1$. By the first principles construction we prove that the dimension of the vector space of Laughlin states is at least $\beta^{\rm g}$ for the filling fraction $\nu=1/\beta$. Then using the path integral for the 2d bosonic field compactified on a circle, we reproduce the conjectured $\beta^{\rm g}$-degeneracy as the number of independent holomorphic blocks. We also discuss the lowest Landau level, integer QH state and its relation to the bosonization formulas on higher genus Riemann surfaces.

Bergman kernel asymptotics for singular metrics on punctured Riemann surfaces

We consider singular metrics on a punctured Riemann surface and on a line bundle and study the behavior of the Bergman kernel in the neighbourhood of the punctures. The results have an interpretation in terms of the asymptotic profile of the density of states function of the lowest Landau level in quantum Hall effect.

Geometry and large N limits in Laughlin states

In these notes I survey geometric aspects of the lowest Landau level wave functions, integer quantum Hall state and Laughlin states on compact Riemann surfaces. In particular, I review geometric adiabatic transport on the moduli spaces, derivation of the electromagnetic and gravitational anomalies, Chern-Simons theory and adiabatic phase, and the relation to holomorphic line bundles, Quillen metric, regularized spectral determinants, bosonisation formulas on Riemann surfaces and asymptotic expansion of the Bergman kernel.

Quantum Hall effect and Quillen metric

We study the generating functional, the adiabatic curvature and the adiabatic phase for the integer quantum Hall effect (QHE) on a compact Riemann surface. For the generating functional we derive its asymptotic expansion for the large flux of the magnetic field, i.e., for the large degree $k$ of the positive Hermitian line bundle $L^k$. The expansion consists of the anomalous and exact terms. The anomalous terms are the leading terms of the expansion. This part is responsible for the quantization of the adiabatic transport coefficients in QHE. We then identify the non-local (anomalous) part of the expansion with the Quillen metric on the determinant line bundle, and the subleading exact part with the asymptotics of the regularized spectral determinant of the Laplacian for the line bundle $L^k$, at large $k$. Finally, we show how the generating functional of the integer QHE is related to the gauge and gravitational (2+1)d Chern-Simons functionals. We observe the relation between the Bismut-Gillet-Soulé curvature formula for the Quillen metric and the adiabatic curvature for the electromagnetic and geometric adiabatic transport of the integer Quantum Hall state. Then we relate the adiabatic phase in QHE to the eta invariant and show that the geometric part of the adiabatic phase is given by the Chern-Simons functional.

Lowest Landau level on a cone and zeta determinants

We consider the integer QH state on Riemann surfaces with conical singularities, with the main objective of detecting the effect of the gravitational anomaly directly from the form of the wave function on a singular geometry. We suggest the formula expressing the normalisation factor of the holomorphic state in terms of the regularized zeta determinant on conical surfaces and check this relation for some model geometries. We also comment on possible extensions of this result to the fractional QH states.

Heat kernel measures on random surfaces

The heat kernel on the symmetric space of positive definite Hermitian matrices is used to endow the spaces of Bergman metrics of degree k on a Riemann surface M with a family of probability measures depending on a choice of the background metric. Under a certain matrix-metric correspondence, each positive definite Hermitian matrix corresponds to a Kahler metric on M. The one and two point functions of the random metric are calculated in a variety of limits as k and t tend to infinity. In the limit when the time t goes to infinity the fluctuations of the random metric around the background metric are the same as the fluctuations of random zeros of holomorphic sections. This is due to the fact that the random zeros form the boundary of the space of Bergman metrics.

Geometric adiabatic transport in quantum Hall states

We argue that in addition to the Hall conductance and the nondissipative component of the viscous tensor, there exists a third independent transport coefficient, which is precisely quantized. It takes constant values along quantum Hall plateaus. We show that the new coefficient is the Chern number of a vector bundle over moduli space of surfaces of genus 2 or higher and therefore cannot change continuously along the plateau. As such, it does not transpire on a sphere or a torus. In the linear response theory, this coefficient determines intensive forces exerted on electronic fluid by adiabatic deformations of geometry and represents the effect of the gravitational anomaly. We also present the method of computing the transport coefficients for quantum Hall states.

FQHE on curved backgrounds, free fields and large N

We study the free energy of the Laughlin state on curved backgrounds, starting from the free field representation. A simple argument, based on the computation of the gravitational effective action from the transformation properties of Green functions under the change of the metric, allows to compute the first three terms of the expansion in large magnetic field. The leading and subleading contributions are given by the Aubin-Yau and Mabuchi functionals respectively, whereas the Liouville action appears at next-to-next-to-leading order. We also derive a path integral representation for the remainder terms. They correspond to a large mass expansion for a related interacting scalar field theory and are thus given by local polynomials in curvature invariants.

Stability and integration over Bergman metrics

We study partition functions of random Bergman metrics, with the actions defined by a class of geometric functionals known as `stability functions'. We introduce a new stability invariant - the critical value of the coupling constant - defined as the minimal coupling constant for which the partition function converges. It measures the minimal degree of stability of geodesic rays in the space the Bergman metrics, with respect to the action. We calculate this critical value when the action is the $ν$-balancing energy, and show that $γ_k^{\rm crit} = k - h$ on a Riemann surface of genus $h$.
