Discrete index Whittaker transforms

Discrete analogs of the index Whittaker transform are introduced and investigated. It involves series and integrals with respect to a second parameter of the Whittaker function $W_{μ, {i n} }(x), \ x >0, \ μ\in \mathbb{R}, \ n \in \mathbb{N}, \ i $ is the imaginary unit. The corresponding inversion formulas for suitable functions and sequences in terms of these series and integrals are established.

On the construction of convolution-like operators associated with multidimensional diffusion processes

When is it possible to interpret a given Markov process as a Lévy-like process? Since the class of Lévy processes can be defined by the relation between transition probabilities and convolutions, the answer to this question lies in the existence of a convolution-like operator satisfying the same relation with the transition probabilities of the process. It is known that the so-called Sturm-Liouville convolutions have the desired properties and therefore the question above has a positive answer for a certain class of one-dimensional diffusions. However, more general processes have never been systematically treated in the literature. This study addresses this gap by considering the general problem of constructing a convolution-like operator for a given strong Feller process on a general locally compact metric space. Both necessary and sufficient conditions for the existence of such convolution-like structures are determined, which reveal a connection between the answer to the above question and certain analytical and geometrical properties of the eigenfunctions of the transition semigroup. The case of reflected Brownian motions on bounded domains of R d and compact Riemannian manifolds is considered in greater detail: various special cases are analysed, and a general discussion on the existence of appropriate convolution-like structures is presented.

Discrete Lebedev-Skalskaya transforms

Discrete analogs of the Lebedev-Skalskaya transforms are introduced and investigated. It involves series and integrals with respect to the kernels ${\rm Re} K_{α+in}(x), {\rm Im} K_{α+in}(x), x >0, n \in \mathbb{N}, |α| < 1,\ i $ is the imaginary unit and $K_ν(z)$ is the modified Bessel function. The corresponding inversion formulas for suitable functions and sequences in terms of these series and integrals are established when $α= \pm 1/2$. The case $α=0$ reduces to the Kontorovich-Lebedev transform.

On the Laguerre fractional integro-differentiation

A fractional power interpretation of the Laguerre derivative $(DxD)^α,\ D\equiv {d\over dx} $ is discussed. The corresponding fractional integrals are introduced. Mapping and semigroup properties, integral representations and Mellin transform analysis are presented. A relationship with the Riemann-Liouville fractional integrals is demonstrated. Finally, a second kind integral equation of the Volterra-type, involving the Laguerre fractional integral is solved in terms of the double hypergeometric type series as the resolvent kernel.

Product formulas and convolutions for two-dimensional Laplace-Beltrami operators: beyond the trivial case

We introduce the notion of a family of convolution operators associated with a given elliptic partial differential operator. Such a convolution structure is shown to exist for a general class of Laplace-Beltrami operators on two-dimensional manifolds endowed with cone-like metrics. This structure gives rise to a convolution semigroup representation for the Markovian semigroup generated by the Laplace-Beltrami operator. In the particular case of the operator $\mathcal{L} = \partial_x^2 + {1 \over 2x} \partial_x + {1 \over x} \partial_θ^2$ on $\mathbb{R}^+ \times \mathbb{T}$, we deduce the existence of a convolution structure for a two-dimensional integral transform whose kernel and inversion formula can be written in closed form in terms of confluent hypergeometric functions. The results of this paper can be interpreted as a natural extension of the theory of one-dimensional generalized convolutions to the framework of multiparameter eigenvalue problems.

Discrete Kontorovich-Lebedev transforms

Discrete analogs of the classical Kontorovich-Lebedev transforms are introduced and investigated. It involves series with the modified Bessel function or Macdonald function $K_{in}(x), x >0, n \in \mathbb{N}, i $ is the imaginary unit, and incomplete Bessel functions. Several expansions of suitable functions and sequences in terms of these series and integrals are established. As an application, a Dirichlet boundary value problem in the upper half-plane for inhomogeneous Helmholtz equation is solved.

Polynomial problems of the Casas-Alvero type

We establish necessary and sufficient conditions for an arbitrary polynomial of degree $n$, especially with only real roots, to be trivial, i.e. to have the form a(x-b)^n. To do this, we derive new properties of polynomials and their roots. In particular, it concerns new bounds and genetic sum's representations of the Abel -Goncharov interpolation polynomials. Moreover, we prove the Sz.-Nagy type identities, the Laguerre and Obreshkov-Chebotarev type inequalities for roots of polynomials and their derivatives. As applications these results are associated with the known problem, conjectured by Casas- Alvero in 2001, which says, that any complex univariate polynomial, having a common root with each of its non-constant derivative must be a power of a linear polynomial. We investigate particular cases of the problem, when the conjecture holds true or, possibly, is false.

Orthogonal polynomials with ultra-exponential weight functions: an explicit solution to the Ditkin-Prudnikov problem

New sequences of orthogonal polynomials with ultra-exponential weight functions are discovered. In particular, it gives an explicit solution to the Ditkin-Prudnikov problem (1966). The 3-term recurrence relations, explicit representations, generating functions and Rodrigues type formulae are derived. The method is based on differential properties of the involved special functions and their representations in terms of the Mellin-Barnes and Laplace integrals. A notion of the composition polynomial orthogonality is introduced. The corresponding advantages of this orthogonality to discover new sequences of polynomials and their relations to the corresponding multiple orthogonal polynomial ensembles are shown.

It involves series with the associated Legendre function $P^μ_{in-1/2}(x), x > 1,\ {\rm Re} μ< 1/2, \ n \in \mathbb{N}, i $ is the imaginary unit, and the so-called incomplete Legendre integrals. Several expansions of arbitrary functions and sequences in terms of these series and integrals are established.

On the affirmative solution to Salem's problem

The Salem problem to verify whether Fourier-Stieltjes coefficients of the Minkowski question mark function vanish at infinity is solved recently affirmatively. In this paper by using methods of classical analysis and special functions we solve a Salem-type problem about the behavior at infinity of a linear combination of the Fourier-Stieltjes transforms. Moreover, as a consequence of the Salem problem, some asymptotic relations at infinity for the Fourier-Stieltjes coefficients of a power $m\in \mathbb{N}$ of the Minkowski question mark function are derived.

On the product formula and convolution associated with the index Whittaker transform

We deduce a product formula for the Whittaker $W$ function whose kernel does not depend on the second parameter. Making use of this formula, we define the positivity-preserving convolution operator associated with the index Whittaker transform, which is seen to be a direct generalization of the Kontorovich-Lebedev convolution. The mapping properties of this convolution operator are investigated; in particular, a Banach algebra property is established and then applied to yield an analogue of the Wiener-Lévy theorem for the index Whittaker transform. We show how our results can be used to prove the existence of a unique solution for a class of convolution-type integral equations.

Sturm-Liouville hypergroups without the compactness axiom

We establish a positive product formula for the solutions of the Sturm-Liouville equation $\ell(u) = λu$, where $\ell$ belongs to a general class which includes singular and degenerate Sturm-Liouville operators. Our technique relies on a positivity theorem for possibly degenerate hyperbolic Cauchy problems and on a regularization method which makes use of the properties of the diffusion semigroup generated by the Sturm-Liouville operator. We show that the product formula gives rise to a convolution algebra structure on the space of finite measures, and we discuss whether this structure satisfies the basic axioms of the theory of hypergroups. We introduce the notion of a degenerate hypergroup of full support and improve the known existence theorems for Sturm-Liouville hypergroups. Convolution-type integral equations on weighted Lebesgue spaces are also introduced, and a solvability condition is established.
