Multimodal Representations Learning Based on Mutual Information Maximization and Minimization and Identity Embedding for Multimodal Sentiment Analysis

Multimodal sentiment analysis (MSA) is a fundamental complex research problem due to the heterogeneity gap between different modalities and the ambiguity of human emotional expression. Although there have been many successful attempts to construct multimodal representations for MSA, there are still two challenges to be addressed: 1) A more robust multimodal representation needs to be constructed to bridge the heterogeneity gap and cope with the complex multimodal interactions, and 2) the contextual dynamics must be modeled effectively throughout the information flow. In this work, we propose a multimodal representation model based on Mutual information Maximization and Minimization and Identity Embedding (MMMIE). We combine mutual information maximization between modal pairs, and mutual information minimization between input data and corresponding features to mine the modal-invariant and task-related information. Furthermore, Identity Embedding is proposed to prompt the downstream network to perceive the contextual information. Experimental results on two public datasets demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed model.

Towards Scale Consistent Monocular Visual Odometry by Learning from the Virtual World

Monocular visual odometry (VO) has attracted extensive research attention by providing real-time vehicle motion from cost-effective camera images. However, state-of-the-art optimization-based monocular VO methods suffer from the scale inconsistency problem for long-term predictions. Deep learning has recently been introduced to address this issue by leveraging stereo sequences or ground-truth motions in the training dataset. However, it comes at an additional cost for data collection, and such training data may not be available in all datasets. In this work, we propose VRVO, a novel framework for retrieving the absolute scale from virtual data that can be easily obtained from modern simulation environments, whereas in the real domain no stereo or ground-truth data are required in either the training or inference phases. Specifically, we first train a scale-aware disparity network using both monocular real images and stereo virtual data. The virtual-to-real domain gap is bridged by using an adversarial training strategy to map images from both domains into a shared feature space. The resulting scale-consistent disparities are then integrated with a direct VO system by constructing a virtual stereo objective that ensures the scale consistency over long trajectories. Additionally, to address the suboptimality issue caused by the separate optimization backend and the learning process, we further propose a mutual reinforcement pipeline that allows bidirectional information flow between learning and optimization, which boosts the robustness and accuracy of each other. We demonstrate the effectiveness of our framework on the KITTI and vKITTI2 datasets.

foREST: A Tree-based Approach for Fuzzing RESTful APIs

Representational state transfer (REST) is a widely employed architecture by web applications and cloud. Users can invoke such services according to the specification of their application interfaces, namely RESTful APIs. Existing approaches for fuzzing RESTful APIs are generally based on classic API-dependency graphs. However, such dependencies are inefficient for REST services due to the explosion of dependencies among APIs. In this paper, we propose a novel tree-based approach that can better capture the essential dependencies and largely improve the efficiency of RESTful API fuzzing. In particular, the hierarchical information of the endpoints across multiple APIs enables us to construct an API tree, and the relationships of tree nodes can indicate the priority of resource dependencies, \textit{e.g.,} it's more likely that a node depends on its parent node rather than its offspring or siblings. In the evaluation part, we first confirm that such a tree-based approach is more efficient than traditional graph-based approaches. We then apply our tool to fuzz two real-world RESTful services and compare the performance with two state-of-the-art tools, EvoMaster and RESTler. Our results show that foREST can improve the code coverage in all experiments, ranging from 11.5\% to 82.5\%. Besides, our tool finds 11 new bugs previously unknown.

Near-field radiative heat transfer between hybrid polaritonic structures

Near-field radiative heat transfer between close objects may exceed the far-field blackbody radiation in orders of magnitude when exploiting polaritonic materials. Great efforts have been made to experimentally measure this fundamental stochastic effect but mostly based on simple materials. In this work, we foster an all-optical method to characterize the heat transfer between less explored plasmon-phonon hybrid polaritonic systems made of graphene-SiC heterostructures. A large heat flux about 26 times of the blackbody radiation limit is obtained over a 150-nm vacuum gap, attributed to the couplings of three different surface modes (plasmon, phonon polaritons and frustrated mode). The interaction of polaritonic modes in the hybrid system is also explored to build a switchable thermophotonic device with nearly unity heat flux tunability. This work paves the way for understanding mode-mediated near-field heat transfer and provides a platform for building thermophotonic or thermo-optoelectronic blocks for various applications.

Passive temperature management based on near-field heat transfer

Thermal or temperature management in modern machines has drawn great attentions in the last decades. The waste heat caused during the machine operation is particularly pernicious for the temperature-dependent electronics and may reduce the apparatus performance and lifetime. To control the operation temperature while maintaining high input powers is often a dilemma. Enormous works have been done for the purpose. Here, a passive temperature management method based on near-field heat transfer is introduced, utilizing graphene-plasmon enhanced evanescence wave tunneling. Within a pump power tolerance range of 0.5-7 KW m-2, the device can automatically regulate its thermal emissivity to quickly acquire thermal homeostasis around a designed temperature. It is compact, fully passive and could be incorporated into chip design. The results pave a promising way for passive thermal management that could be used in modern instruments in particular for vacuum environmental applications.

Explicit pseudo-transient continuation and the trust-region updating strategy for unconstrained optimization

This paper considers an explicit continuation method and the trust-region updating strategy for the unconstrained optimization problem. Moreover, in order to improve its computational efficiency and robustness, the new method uses the switching preconditioning technique. In the well-conditioned phase, the new method uses the L-BFGS method as the preconditioning technique in order to improve its computational efficiency. Otherwise, the new method uses the inverse of the Hessian matrix as the pre-conditioner in order to improve its robustness. Numerical results aslo show that the new method is more robust and faster than the traditional optimization method such as the trust-region method and the line search method. The computational time of the new method is about one percent of that of the trust-region method (the subroutine fminunc.m of the MATLAB2019a environment, it is set by the trust-region method) or one fifth of that the line search method (fminunc.m is set by the quasi-Newton method) for the large-scale problem. Finally, the global convergence analysis of the new method is also given.

GTAE: Graph-Transformer based Auto-Encoders for Linguistic-Constrained Text Style Transfer

Non-parallel text style transfer has attracted increasing research interests in recent years. Despite successes in transferring the style based on the encoder-decoder framework, current approaches still lack the ability to preserve the content and even logic of original sentences, mainly due to the large unconstrained model space or too simplified assumptions on latent embedding space. Since language itself is an intelligent product of humans with certain grammars and has a limited rule-based model space by its nature, relieving this problem requires reconciling the model capacity of deep neural networks with the intrinsic model constraints from human linguistic rules. To this end, we propose a method called Graph Transformer based Auto Encoder (GTAE), which models a sentence as a linguistic graph and performs feature extraction and style transfer at the graph level, to maximally retain the content and the linguistic structure of original sentences. Quantitative experiment results on three non-parallel text style transfer tasks show that our model outperforms state-of-the-art methods in content preservation, while achieving comparable performance on transfer accuracy and sentence naturalness.

Community Preserved Social Graph Publishing with Node Differential Privacy

The goal of privacy-preserving social graph publishing is to protect individual privacy while preserving data utility. Community structure, which is an important global pattern of nodes, is a crucial data utility as it serves as fundamental operations for many graph analysis tasks. Yet, most existing methods with differential privacy (DP) commonly fall in edge-DP to sacrifice security in exchange for utility. Moreover, they reconstruct graphs from the local feature-extraction of nodes, resulting in poor community preservation. Motivated by this, we propose PrivCom, a strict node-DP graph publishing algorithm to maximize the utility on the community structure while maintaining a higher level of privacy. Specifically, to reduce the huge sensitivity, we devise a Katz index-based private graph feature extraction method, which can capture global graph structure features while greatly reducing the global sensitivity via a sensitivity regulation strategy. Yet, with a fixed sensitivity, the feature captured by Katz index, which is presented in matrix form, requires privacy budget splits. As a result, plenty of noise is injected, thereby mitigating global structural utility. To this end, we design a private Oja algorithm approximating eigen-decomposition, which yields the noisy Katz matrix via privately estimating eigenvectors and eigenvalues from extracted low-dimensional vectors. Experimental results confirm our theoretical findings and the efficacy of PrivCom.

Large magnetoelectric coupling in multiferroic oxide heterostructures assembled via epitaxial lift-off

The strain dependent functional properties of epitaxial transition metal oxide films can be significantly modified via substrate selection. However, large lattice mismatches preclude dislocation-free epitaxial growth on ferroelectric substrates, whose strain states are modified by applied electric fields. Here we overcome this mismatch problem by depositing an epitaxial film of ferromagnetic La0.7Sr0.3MnO3 on a single crystal substrate of well lattice matched SrTiO3 via a film of SrRuO3 that we subsequently dissolved, permitting the transfer of unstrained La0.7Sr0.3MnO3 to a ferroelectric substrate of 0.68Pb(Mg1/3Nb2/3)O3 0.32PbTiO3 in a different crystallographic orientation. Ferroelectric domain switching, and a concomitant ferroelectric phase transition, produced large non volatile changes of magnetization that were mediated by magnetic domain rotations at locations defined by the microstructure - as revealed via high resolution vector maps of magnetization constructed from photoemission electron microscopy data, with contrast from x-ray magnetic circular dichroism. In future, our method may be exploited to control functional properties in dislocation free epitaxial films of any composition.

Accurate Target Localization by using Artificial Pinnae of brown long-eared bat

Echolocating bats locate the targets by echolocation. Many theoretical frameworks have been suggested the abilities of bats are related to the shapes of bats ears, but few artificial bat-like ears have been made to mimic the abilities, the difficulty of which lies in the determination of the elevation angle of the target. In this study, we present a device with artificial bat pinnae modeling by the ears of brown long-eared bat (Plecotus auritus) which can accurately estimate the elevation angle of the aerial target by virtue of active sonar. An artificial neural-network with the labeled data obtained from echoes as the trained and tested data is used and optimized by a tenfold cross-validation technique. A decision method we named sliding window averaging algorithm is designed for getting the estimation results of elevation. At last, a right-angle pinnae construction is designed for determining direction of the target. The results show a higher accuracy for the direction determination of the single target. The results also demonstrate that for the Plecotus auritus bat, not only the binaural shapes, but the binaural relative orientations also play important roles in the target localization.

Composite Adaptive Control for Bilateral Teleoperation Systems without Persistency of Excitation

Composite adaptive control schemes, which use both the system tracking errors and the prediction error to drive the update laws, have become widespread in achieving an improvement of system performance. However, a strong persistent-excitation (PE) condition should be satisfied to guarantee the parameter convergence. This paper proposes a novel composite adaptive control to guarantee parameter convergence without PE condition for nonlinear teleoperation systems with dynamic uncertainties and time-varying communication delays. The stability criteria of the closed-loop teleoperation system are given in terms of linear matrix inequalities. New tracking performance measures are proposed to evaluate the position tracking between the master and the slave. Simulation studies are given to show the effectiveness of the proposed method.

Quantum radiation produced by the entanglement of quantum fields

We investigate the quantum radiation produced by an Unruh-De Witt detector in a uniformly accelerating motion coupled to the vacuum fluctuations. Quantum radiation is nonvanishing, which is consistent with the previous calculation by Lin and Hu [Phys. Rev. D 73, 124018 (2006)]. We infer that this quantum radiation from the Unruh-De Witt detector is generated by the nonlocal correlation of the Minkowski vacuum state, which has its origin in the entanglement of the state between the left and the right Rindler wedges.

Unruh radiation produced by a uniformly accelerating charged particle in thermal random motions

In this study, we investigate the signature of the Unruh effect in quantum radiation from an accelerated charged particle interacting with vacuum fluctuations. Because a charged particle in uniformly accelerated motion exhibits thermal random motion around the classical trajectory because of the Unruh effect, its quantum radiation might be termed Unruh radiation. We show that the energy flux of the quantum radiation is negative and that its amplitude is smaller than the classical Larmor radiation by a factor of $a/m$, where $a$ is the acceleration and $m$ is the mass of the particle. The total radiation flux of the classical Larmor radiation and the quantum radiation is positive; therefore, the quantum radiation appears to suppress the total radiation. Interestingly, the results are consistent with the prediction for the quantum correction to classical Larmor radiation, which were obtained using a different approach.

Quantum radiation produced by a uniformly accelerating charged particle in thermal random motion

We investigate the properties of quantum radiation produced by a uniformly accelerating charged particle undergoing thermal random motions, which originates from the coupling to the vacuum fluctuations of the electromagnetic field. Because the thermal random motions are regarded to result from the Unruh effect, this quantum radiation is termed Unruh radiation. The energy flux of Unruh radiation is negative and smaller than that of Larmor radiation by one order in a/m, where a is the constant acceleration and m is the mass of the particle. Thus, the Unruh radiation appears to be a suppression of the classical Larmor radiation. The quantum interference effect plays an important role in this unique signature. The results is consistent with the predictions of a model consisting of a particle coupled to a massless scalar field as well as those of the previous studies on the quantum effect on the Larmor radiation.

Quantum radiation from a particle in an accelerated motion coupled to vacuum fluctuations

A particle in a uniformly accelerated motion exhibits Brownian random motions around the classical trajectory due to the coupling to the field vacuum fluctuations. Previous works show that the Brownian random motions satisfy the energy equipartition relation. This thermal property is understood as the consequence of the Unruh effect. In the present work, we investigate the radiation from the thermal random motions of an accelerated particle coupled to vacuum fluctuations. The energy flux of this radiation is negative of the order smaller than the classical radiation by the factor a/m, where a is the acceleration constant and m is the mass of a particle. The results could be understood as a suppression of the classical radiation by the quantum effect.

Thermal property in Brownian motion of a particle coupled to vacuum fluctuations

We investigate Brownian motions of a particle coupled to vacuum fluctuations of a quantum field. The Unruh effect predicts that an observer in an accelerated motion sees the Minkowski vacuum as thermally excited. This addresses the problem of whether a thermal property appears in a perturbative random motion of a particle in an accelerated motion due to the coupling or not. We revisit this problem by solving the equation of motion of a particle coupled to vacuum fluctuations including the radiation reaction force. We compute a Fourier integral for the variance of the random velocity in a rigorous manner. Similarly, we consider a particle coupled to vacuum fluctuations in de Sitter spacetime motivated by the argument that an observer in de Sitter spacetime sees the Bunch-Davies vacuum as a thermally excited state with the Gibbons-Hawking temperature. Our investigation clarifies the condition that the energy equipartition relation arises in the Brownian motions of a particle.

Stabilization of Radiation Reaction with Vacuum Polarization

From the development of the electron theory by H. A. Lorentz in 1906, many authors have tried to reformulate this model. P. A. M. Dirac derived the relativistic-classical electron model in 1938, which is now called the Lorentz-Abraham-Dirac model. But this model has the big difficulty of the run-away solution. Recently, this equation has become important for ultra-intense laser-electron (plasma) interactions. For simulations in this research field, it is desirable to stabilize this model of the radiation reaction. In this paper, we will discuss this ability for radiation reaction with the inclusion of vacuum polarization. [Submitted to Progress of Theoretical and Experimental Physics (PTEP)]

Pre-acceleration from Landau-Lifshitz Series

The Landau-Lifshitz equation is considered as an approximation of the Abraham-Lorentz-Dirac equation. It is derived from the Abraham-Lorentz-Dirac equation by treating radiation reaction terms as a perturbation. However, while the Abraham-Lorentz-Dirac equation has pathological solutions of pre-acceleration and runaway, the Landau-Lifshitz equation and its finite higher order extensions are free of these problems. So it seems mysterious that the property of solutions of these two equations is so different. In this paper we show that the problems of pre-acceleration and runaway appear when one consider a series of all-order perturbation which we call it the Landau-Lifshitz series. We show that the Landau-Lifshitz series diverges in general. Hence a resummation is necessary to obtain a well-defined solution from the Landau-Lifshitz series. This resummation leads the pre-accelerating and the runaway solutions. The analysis is focusing on the non-relativistic case, but we can extend the results obtained here to relativistic case at least in one dimension.
